ND Pennant could be as early as the teens. What are the measurements (height x length?)

Jobu 06-18-2015 09:14 PM

It would be awesome if it is that old. It is 35" long (excluding the tassels) by 12.5" tall.

perezfan 06-19-2015 08:21 AM

I'm not expert on college pennants, but the size, construction, materials, and overall aesthetics all indicate mid to late teens. It's a beauty, and likely pushing the "century mark" in terms of its age!

Jobu 06-19-2015 11:12 AM

Thanks for the info, it is great to have a better idea of when it is from.

Here is one of mine

Duluth Eskimo 06-19-2015 09:33 PM

I agree on the Notre Dame pennant. Very early and teens / twenties is right on.

In regards to the two sided Maryland / Hawks pennant, these are legit. I have sold a few over the years. I would say this is two different makers as the Hawks is an Adflag pennant or similar. Probably got the leftover Maryland cheap.

Lastly, that is a great Giants pennant. I love the detail.

perezfan 06-20-2015 07:12 PM

Now it's my turn to agree...

That Giants Pennant is one of the very best. Great graphics, and kind of an Asian feel to the lettering. It has been theorized that this one was created for the 1913 World Tour, in which the Giants and White Sox visited Japan, China and the Phillipines (among other countries).

The player's uniform would certainly fit that timing. There's no way to prove or confirm it either way, but it would certainly make sense!

lefty147 06-20-2015 08:29 PM

That one is one of my favorites as well. Love the image and lettering.

Absolutely not and ridiculous that the eBay seller is trying to make the connection. Either this same one or similar has been listed for a while with the same "connection". I saw this when I was searching earlier this week. Hopefully it doesn't sell for that much. BTW, the pennant itself is legit for just a city pennant. No relation to baseball.

Kind of what I thought. I'm not bidding, but the orange and black gave me pause until I did a little quick research. The NY Giants wore plaid  in 1916 and pinstripes in 1917. I believe the colors were either purple or blue or black. Does anyone know the color(s) of the 1917 uniform?

lefty147 07-22-2015 07:10 PM

He did the same with this one.

$571

Duluth Eskimo 07-23-2015 08:22 PM

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Maybe the buyer has a photo of it at a game or something. I highly doubt it. I would not buy it for $50 as I have never seen an example like that in any photo I have seen and I try to pay close attention to early photos of pennants as many others do too. If someone on here did buy it and want to enlighten me, I would love to hear the rest of the story.

I know this NY pennant has come up in the past and sellers have tried to attribute it to the Giants. I think we all believe it is a major stretch to attribute it specifically to baseball . Even if a photo were to surface of someone holding it at a stadium who is to say the gibrone didn't just bring it to the ball park from home. Agreed $50 at most for this generic pennant.

This sweet pennant is up on ebay. I'll stick with my beat to hell example.

Teamgluck 11-09-2015 03:26 PM

Thats a nice one!

It seems that nodder prices are almost back but why is the pennant market taking so long to recover?

Starting price is way too high. It has a rip at the upper-left that extends out to the border (which the seller discloses, but sort of Poo-Poos). And he compares it to the early Mastro example which was sold at the absolute peak of the market (and was likely shilled, at that). I would think $500 is a good aggressive starting price, and then see where it goes from there.

I am probably in the top 2% of prospective buyers for this pennant (along with Rob), but even I must sit this one out :o

High-end/Oversized/Dated pennants are realizing great prices, as they've really dried up. It's the mid-range and more common variations that are floundering. Of course this represents the vast majority of those for sale.

It's all just supply and demand. Right now the supply exceeds the demand for the more commonly seen pennants.

perezfan 11-09-2015 04:58 PM

Examples of rarer Pennants doing very well...

Antiquated Hunts website apparently won't simply copy/paste. Oh well- they currently have some nice ones that are garnering spirited bidding.

Congrats! Beautiful pennant.

Duluth Eskimo 11-09-2015 06:42 PM

I agree that high end rare examples seem to be doing a lot better than I would expect. High quality scarce examples always seem to do well. What else is new.

lefty147 11-09-2015 07:07 PM

One of my favorites.

Rookiemonster 11-09-2015 07:16 PM

Teach me !

I would love to know more about pennants is there anything I can research or can someone tell what's up ?

Duluth Eskimo 11-09-2015 07:45 PM

Just kind of watch the auctions and figure out what you like. I always encourage people to buy what they like and not what others say they should like. Buy high quality and you will never go wrong.

Pennants are great because there are so many different styles and price points compared to other collectibles. Also, great examples are fairly rare and tough to find. They also display incredibly well with almost any current collectible you might already have.

Good luck competing against some of these sharks.

Duluth Eskimo 11-09-2015 07:46 PM

Also, you should pick up one of Mike's (lefty) books. There is a lot of good info in them

Rookiemonster 11-10-2015 04:50 PM

Thanks Eskimo !

If we can increase the quantity of collectors i think the mid range pennant market will see a big rebound.

ooo-ribay 11-12-2015 02:30 PM

Chris - are the 1939 and 1940 full size? Great crossover appeal with the Pepsi logo.

perezfan 11-12-2015 02:33 PM

Those are some real "toughies"... All three of them...

Never seen the white 1940 version... Beauty!

Great stuff, Chris!

I could certainly be wrong, but I'm thinking the modern, QUALITY pennants, such as Winning Streak, might actually be worth something in 100 years. The quality is really good and the higher retail price keeps them from being sold in huge quantities.

Tigerden 11-12-2015 02:41 PM

Wow Chris- The 1940 Reds Champs Pennant with the grommets is killer! Never saw that one before. Thanks for posting. Adam

Thanks, fellas. Rob, I would call both white ones about 3/4 size. The red is full size. Here's the smaller version of the pepsi pennant. Its about half the size of the other, but no pepsi ...

I was thinking about that last week and I 100% agree... I bought the Golden Gophers Mascot versions While not pennants I think the Danbury Mint stuff could have a big rise in value as well
