I've been surprised and impressed by the sheer number of magazine covers graced by Clemente. His playing days pre-date my awareness of sports, so concurrent magazine spreads isn't something I would otherwise have knowledge of.
Given that generally they are monthly publications, that he was a recognized star for maybe 15 yrs once he got rolling, and yet that there were hundreds upon hundreds of other players during that span to divvy publication covers among, it is impressive you've been able to post here what seems like a couple dozen with RC. Too bad we don't have an advanced statistic on this to cite, something like an MSA- the magazine saturation average... |

Thanks, and there’s always more that I haven’t seen before. |

Yowza, what's the significance of the tan line going across the '21' on those buttons?? It looks like they're x'ing out Clemente.
|
It’s a group based out of The Pittsburgh area that is trying to have MLB retire Roberto’s number. Hence, the retire 21. It’s not meant in a negative way.

I appreciate the good furry edge you've got on that '73 OPC.
Not to give away my secrets to competitors, but after taking to heart something I learned from some other thread somewhere, if I'm in the market for an OPC and considering two otherwise equal examples, I go for the one with the fuzziest edges, reasoning since that's a main distinguishing factor from T, then may as well highlight it... |

Have been enjoying this thread for quite some time now, great items guys and keep them coming. Would really like to add a Clemente rookie card to the collection. For now happy with this pre rookie, 1954 Montreal, minor league autograph. Haven`t seen too many autos of Roberto before being claimed from the Dodgers organization by the Pirates so when this one came around thought it was too cool to pass up. Again, keep posting the rarer the better !

Thanks Hugh! Great early Roberto auto. Did he only sign his last name on that? |
Clemente Auto
Thanks for the compliment, and yes he did only sign his last name. Although I`ve seen a few 1954 minor league team auto`ed balls with Roberto`s full name, the story went he was a rather shy signer in person and thus flats this early are pretty hard to find. Not sure if it was the culture/language barrier but in the mid 50`s it wouldn`t surprise me at all. Hang tough, Murph

Keep it going...at least to day 366 !! Have you posted his 68 action stickers yet? Dont forget the 68 3D!!!
|
Quote:
I posted one of the Action All-Star sticker panels early on (Day 20), with Roberto on the center panel. I don't have the other panel strip though. Unfortunately, I don't have the 68 3D. I had an opportunity 10-15 years ago to purchase one in PR condition for $3000-4000, but I passed. So probably a white whale for me now as I don't purchase too many big ticket items anymore. Day 331
In the late 1990s/early 2000s, bobble heads were all the rage...and of course I had to have every Roberto nodder. ca. 1990s "Catman" (some guy in Canada) fantasy nodder... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...tasyNodder.jpg 2001 PNC Park giveaway. 1975
The 1975 issue is one of my favorites. You get Topps, OPC AND the Mini’s which are all neat looking. Of course that blank back you pictured was a favorite; those are hard to come by from my experience. Wish they at least had Frank in his Orioles unit for the ‘66 card or at least do a little air brushing.
I like how you snuck the OPC card in on a separate day; I think you owe “us” another Clemente day 😉 |

Did none of the Pittsburgh papers do a special edition on January 1 about Roberto's death? I know I have my LA Times that I bought at the time.
|
I don’t think I’ve seen a special edition dedicated to his death.
|
Wow, this thread truly mirrors reality. Untold numbers of pages celebrating Roberto Clemente's career and all of the joy it brought to fans...and then BOOM!!!...a sudden turn of events at the end as he dies trying to help shattered people. So depressing. So realistic.

|
I am going to thank you in advance for posting all that great Clemente ! Forty Five ? years after his death, and we can all learn from him what it is to show sportsmanship and class on the field and to be a humanitarian off the field. It really sunk home with me when you posted the old newspapers. Such a sad day... I do remember it . I was only 7 but my Dad told me about it. Sad day... Just like when Thurman died tragically. Even at a young age I understood something really good was taken away from all of us. More than a baseball player.
Thanks Again Scott |
Thank you
Mike,
Thank you for your dedication to keeping this thread going for 365 days and posting your awesome collection!! I have many more items that were not shown and unfortunately not much time to scan and post them. That said I will try from time to time to add images of some more great Clemente items to keep this thread alive! Happy new year to all! Howard |

Please don’t get your hopes up too high, I hope not to end on a dud! |
Scott & Howard,
Thanks for the kind words. It’s been a long haul, but only a couple of days left. Also Howard, I know how things can get busy, but whenever you can, I’d love to see more of your collection. Maybe you can help me revive the thread from time to time. |
Wow, what a great thread to follow all year long and I respect the dedication it took to keep it going -- not only to post every day for a year straight, but to actually have a collection vast enough to share well more than 365 pieces of Clemente related memorabilia. Thanks very much for sharing!
If any player in history is worth such devotion, it is Roberto. |

Thank you CW! Day 364 I saved this next item for towards the end, hoping that I would have a chance to have it repainted by someone or even do it myself. But of course I never seemed to find the time to get it done. I have owned it for over twenty years, and thought that maybe it was a prototype. I’m sure that some young kid probably painted it years ago, but I couldn’t find any signs in the chipped areas that white, yellow or black were underneath so I thought maybe it was some type of prototype. Either way, I’ll probably have it restored because it just doesn’t look right in blue. I’ve only seen 1 or 2 examples of this statue in all the years I’ve collected Clemente. Sorry for the small pic, it’s the only one I have available to post. 1970s Tuscany Studios statue... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...canyStudio.jpg |

Super rare statue mike. I too have only seen 1 or 2 others. Here is one with dare I say a different paint job. Also an exhibit display piece with uncut strips including Clemente and Mantle.
