Picked this 1933 Lincoln Links (Nebraska State League) team photo the other day...first Lincoln pickup in quite a long time. Don Gutteridge is third from right in the top row.

I have never seen that before, but I like how all the players names are just a little off or letters jumbled than their real contemporaries. Very nice

Sal Maglie no-hit game and 1956 World Series Game 1 congrats Western Union telegrams

I picked up a couple of neat Western Union congratulatory telegrams that were sent to Sal "The Barber" Maglie following his no-hitter and win in Game 1 of the 1956 World Series vs. the NY Yankees.

Maglie apparently saved several of these telegrams and they subsequently surfaced in the hobby following his passing in 1992. These two originated from two fellow Italian American families that knew him and sent their well wishes.

Ironically, Sal Maglie was also on the wrong side of another no-hitter in 1956. Maglie was the losing pitcher in Don Larsen's historic World Series perfect game (Game 5) on October 8, 1956, less than two weeks following Maglie's no no.

Scott,
I like those colorful and personal Western Union no-hit telegrams to Sal Maglie.
Here's a telegram from Texas Senator J. Tower sending his congrats to a no hit pitcher in the '60s

Bestdj777 10-21-2014 09:58 PM

I got this as a gift from one of our board members (thank you!). My understanding is that it was personally owned by Red Schoendienst. It will make an excellent companion piece to a Red Schoendienst signed hunting license I have, so I could not be happier to add it to the collection.

Couple of odd Cleveland Stadium pickups. The seats I've had for years, finally got around to refinishing them. (I know, they aren't exact, but they look great.) The Browns' trunk is from the 90's. I bought it at a local auction, and it was so darned cheap I had to get it. Now I store crap in it; it beats plastic tubs.

Great man-cave baseball-movie viewing seats!

(but terrible for making out)

Just received this baseball used in NLDS Game 2 - 18 inning game. It's a Tim Hudson strikeout pitch to Denard Span. The MLB TV replay shows Hudson spitting in his hand and then rubbing the ball up. How did he get away with that?

They are allowed to if they get the umpires permission prior to them taking the mound

Are you sure he's spitting or could he just be blowing on his hand to warm up his fingers? October baseball...I believe the weather was in the mid to low 50s.

packs 10-23-2014 12:13 PM

Nice pick up. Tim Hudson is my favorite current player.

Very nice. My grandfather hunted with Red. I inherited a shotgun shell personalized with the Cardinal logo and Red's Hall of Fame induction year.

I think he's hocking a loogie...

Runscott 10-23-2014 02:20 PM

If you watch the scene on MLB tv, it really looks like he is spitting. I watched it several times, incredulous.

Bob - that is news to me (about getting the umpires permission). I can see blowing in your hands to keep them warm, but getting permission to spit in your hands and then rub the spit on the baseball? Isn't that all that is involved in creating the classic illegal spitball?

Don't get me wrong - I love owning a modern spitball :)

packs 10-23-2014 03:01 PM

I could be wrong but I think the rule is you can go to your mouth as long as you're not standing on the rubber.

Runscott 10-23-2014 03:09 PM

So, is the logic that during the one second it takes to turn and step back on the rubber, the spit dries up?

Runscott 10-23-2014 03:38 PM

It was a quick spit, but here it is. No way this can be mistaken for blowing air on his hands:

packs 10-23-2014 03:42 PM

I think they allow you to wet your fingers for better grip. But some people might take advantage.

8.02
The pitcher shall not --
(a) (1) Bring his pitching hand in contact with his mouth or lips while in the 18 foot circle surrounding the pitching rubber. EXCEPTION: Provided it is agreed to by both managers, the umpire prior to the start of a game played in cold weather, may permit the pitcher to blow on his hand.
PENALTY: For violation of this part of this rule the umpires shall immediately call a ball. However, if the pitch is made and a batter reaches first base on a hit, an error, a hit batsman or otherwise, and no other runner is put out before advancing at least one base, the play shall proceed without reference to the violation. Repeated offenders shall be subject to a fine by the league president.
(2) expectorate on the ball, either hand or his glove;
(3) rub the ball on his glove, person or clothing;
(4) apply a foreign substance of any kind to the ball;
(5) deface the ball in any manner; or
(6) deliver a ball altered in a manner prescribed by Rule 8.02(a)(2) through (5) or what is called the “shine” ball, “spit” ball, “mud” ball or “emery” ball. The pitcher is allowed to rub the ball between his bare hands.

YES!!! I have an illegal spitball! Now I'm regretting selling my Burleigh Grimes autograph.

Thanks Mike - also looking forward to strategizing how to get Felix and Trout to sign our balls.

That sounds a bit creepy Scott:p

packs 10-24-2014 07:15 AM

Just FYI if you're thinking about taking a trip to see the M's in spring training Felix was a great signer this year. He stopped and signed for a group of maybe 35 to 50 of us after practice while I was there.

Here's something that I don't really collect, but when I see something interesting that I've never seen before, I figure it's a good idea to pick it up.
This is from the Brown & Bigelow Company that made the iconic cards and calendars with old ballplayers looking down at kids from the clouds.
It's meant to sit on your desk -- and has a calendar book on top attached to a box for holding either stationery or perhaps the playing cards themselves. The classic drawing of Babe Ruth is on the top of the piece.
I think it's really cool, and as I said -- I've never seen another.
