Kawika - any chance you're still on here? I'd love to talk to you about one of the cards you posted a picture of on this thread....

Early PCL cards from players with connections to Santa Clara University. Something to keep me busy.

quinnsryche 02-10-2018 03:33 PM

Now here's a thread that needed to be resurrected. Love them PCL's!
BTW - anyone have a link to a site that has images of the full Obak runs?

I used to own this one. I guess you could call it a minor league card.

I think this might be the first minor league card set, the 1886 Hancock Clothing Syracuse Stars cards. Here is the Buckley, their catcher.

Here is the back of the Buckley card. I like the cards because they are kind of related (big stretch) to the Old Judge set. Goodwin & Company distributed the Old Judge set, Goodwin (different Goodwin) was the photographer for the Hancock cards. Also, both Buckley and Tomney, two of the three known subjects in this set, later appeared in the Old Judge set.

Thats a cool card. I was not aware of the issue and never even thought of what the first minor league card was/could be. Interesting that Phil Tomney is one of the subjects. Do you perhaps have a scan? Thats another Tomney card added to my checklist I will never own:D

Great card!

GaryPassamonte 02-19-2018 03:28 PM

I really like those cards, Jay. I'm less than 100 miles from Syracuse. Thanks for showing them.

oldjudge 02-19-2018 03:56 PM

Hi Gary! Stars were a solid team.

Thank you for sharing those. I like the name and position being on the reverse of the card. Its a nice change from the regular front printing of most prewar cards. I dont recall seeing another issue from the era with that style of printing of the player information on the back.

Bliggity 02-19-2018 09:54 PM

My favorite prewar set -

I can't recall another 19th century issue with player info on the back.

Here's a link to Spence Harris's page on my website.

Harris holds the minor league record for hits, runs, and doubles. His MiLB stats are stunning!

If you get a chance check out the site -- CooperstownExpert.com. It has pages for every HoFer and 200+ non-HoFers.

Cool to see everyone's minor league cards. Thanks for sharing!!

I thought you were only allowed signed T206s? You need to let me have that Peckinpaugh! Great card, man.

Ha! No... I collect all pre-1915 signed cards. I try not to discriminate, notwithstanding my collecting focus of signed T206 cards.

Some of these old threads bring back memories of cards from days gone by. Here is a current one.
