I still need a Pafko and Rizzuto, to name a few as well, but I am glad to finally knock this Snider off my list. |
There is a variant to the Snider card
|
Quote:
I paid $88.00 for that one, which might be a tad high, but I was getting tired of losing out every time I did try. I happened to place a bid with seconds to spare and couldn't believe my luck finally changed! |

Nice Snider. Great color on that card. Is it a red back? The color is usually better on the red backs. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

It's a red back. |
Snider has a front variant as well, a recurring bottom border irregularity. Not a true variation like the red and black back versions, but it was listed in the Huggins Super Set list. I can send you scan Irv if you want one. Not sure if it shows up in the never ending variations thread, or where it is if it does :)

I looked briefly today but all the info I could find was on the red/black backs, nothing about any variations? |

I'm a little over 95% complete on the Willie Mays Master Set (297 required items). The list below, once my latest PSA submission comes back, are the remainder needed. The 62 bazooka can be had in a panel and cut up, but ideally don't want to do that. The rest are proving difficult and will require patient. I'm still not convinced the "left side" 68 American Oil exists. If if does, would love to see a picture. If anyone can help on the others, I'd buy or trade for them.

Except for the american oil..the rest are easy..theres a 62 bazooka on ebay now psa...at $28
Ive seen all the rest numerous times Weird you have all the rare ones amd need easy stuff...americam oil does exist |
Nothing too exotic, but I am trying to get back to 1961 Topps complete...it was my birth year. Down to town on 1966, a collector grade set, missing the Jackson RC, ugg...probably 25 on 1962 (again collector grade) and about the same on 1961, a nice set. I have found the 1961 highs to be expensive, but not particularly tough to find. I got lucky on the 1967s, finding a collection out of a neighboring town the had a lot of the SPs.
|
Thanks Larry.
I'm looking for a 62 with full borders, so yea, being a little picky. But I know, as you say, one will come up. It's not too rare. Regarding the American Oil. I've seen plenty of right side, and doubles, but have never seen the left side - that's the "action" side. There have been 49 right side graded, but only 3 left sides. So if someone has one, or has a picture of one, I'd be highly interested in either. And lastly, that's been my approach overall with getting the Mays cards - buy the rarer, harder to come by issues whenever I come across them. I've many upgrades to make among the more common issues. |
Mays
Buying the tough ones 1st is the good strategy in my opinion
Rare issues like the american oil winner side have to be pried out of collectors hands just like your dice game😃 |

Here are mine: 1968 Topps Game: Have 27/33 = 82% Complete 1971 Topps Baseball: Have 539/732 = 72% Complete 1973 Topps Baseball: Completed it two weeks ago with the purchase of card #610. On the 1971 set build, I had only intended to complete the lower series, but I found quite a few of the high series at a show a few weeks ago that I couldn't pass up. So, now I'm going for the whole set. I also started picking up 1972 Topps baseball PSA-graded stars this year. I haven't decided on whether or not I will go for the complete set, but if I do, it will be ungraded except for the stars. |
I've started updating my signature line with my progress. I'm going to put in a decent sized COMC order on friday that will include updates for all the sets listed below.....can't wait!!!
|
I realize not postwar, but I am only working on one complete set at this time (although I have many subsets in progress).
My set is the 1939 Playball set. I have been working on this set now for the past 4 years (unfortunately on a budget). With unlimited funds, this really is not a difficult set to put together, but I just cannot throw-down $100/common for the high-numbers. Overall in my set, I am down to only commons; I need 9 commons in the low-number set and 20 commons in the high-numbers. The set is put together with centering key, and condition VG-EX to EX-MT/NM (or PSA/SGC 4 to 6/7). I have approx. half of the set entombed in PSA/SGC including all the HoF/star cards. Beautiful set to look at and the key cards, like Ted and Joe, are just awesome!! 29 more cards........... Dave |
Always like reading these threads. Thanks everyone
not working on any post-war baseball sets right now.
I do have a good head start on my next set project. Need 3 cards to complete my topps/bowman HOFer run 1948-1980. Maybe I'll start looking for high numbers at a good price and see what year the collecting cosmos dumps into my lap set-building- wise. |
New to the forum. I enjoy sharing my progress and hearing about others. Good luck to all in your quests. I like many others am working on a run of Topps sets.

If one does a Topps run, should it include the 1948 Magic Photo baseball subset ? If not, should it include 1951 ? if so, which of the 5 sets from 1951 is needed for such a run ? :)
If you are continuing the run, which set from 2017 would extend the run ? |

I'm just getting into vintage and trying to move/sell/give away my modern to make room and money for vintage. With that in mind, I'm just getting started into sets.
I have an array of vintage (about a 2-row shoebox worth), but not many of any certain year. The closest I am is I have about roughly 440 of the 1974 Topps baseball set. Not sure I will continue toward that set, but I probably will. Other than that, I have about 70 different from 1962 Topps baseball and about 40 each from 1972, 1973 and 1975 Topps. Also have about 25 different from 1957. So those will be next few sets I decide to work on. |
JW---it was only meant as a generic question. In any event, good luck on 1952 and welcome to the Board

1972 High #s complete!!
I started the 1972 Topps baseball set in June and received some advice from members of this board that I should begin with the high #s to knock them out first since they are quite “challenging”. This turned out to be great advice and I am very excited to report that I ordered the final 7 cards of the last series today! I am pretty pumped about this and look forward to completing the set in 2018.
|
So I figured that I would share what I have going on.
I am about 60 cards each from completing nrmt sets of 1959 and 1960 Topps baseball. I have also decided to put the 1958 set together. I have close to 30% of the set, so that will keep me busy. Will continue to pick up many cards from our members here. |
I am now down to 94 cards for my Topps run of sets. Need 36 for 1953, 42 for 1952, and 16 for 1951 Blue Backs. Will still take a little while to finish all of these.

My 1961 set finally surrendered today when I found a good Al Kaline AS card as the final card.
So my number is 17 cards to complete my version of Topps Run ...1952-1980 without the 52 Topps high numbers. My only variations are the 62 Greenies. I thought I would end 2017 with a single digit number, but I haven’t been focusing on this run, in favor of some more prewar goodies. I did finish my 15th set of 1971 Topps FB while being just a few stars short of having 20 sets...in case you’re interested:rolleyes: |

I don't have a focus, per se, except that I want anything I don't have in true ex-mt/nm that are decently centered in any year. Actually, I love 1958, 1959, and 1961 the most right now. Attached is my progress as of yesterday.

Just finished the '56 Topps set with a little help from a board member.
Going to try to wrap up a '71/72 basketball set and start looking for another set to tackle. Choices are '55 Bowman, '64 or '65 Topps or maybe another football set. Hmmmmm........ |
If anybody wants help finishing sets pm list or link if up to date. I'm a cardshop that has been in business 40 years and just now selling online. I do not have graded cards besides a couple bvg basketball I picked up in a lot. So if you are in need of raw let me know.

Appreciate the sanity check
It is good to know that there are others that have the set collecting recessive gene. :)
For me, I always had a goal of completing the entire Topps run from 1952-1992 (when cards really became a whole different world than what I fell in love with as a kid). Complete (all ungraded - all in ex-mt to nm condition as I put every set together by hand): 1958 master set including yellow letters 1960 1962 master set including green tints 1964 1966-1992 After finalizing the T206 set completely PSA graded (but for the big 4) I decided to go after the PSA "big 3" sets so now working on a PSA graded 1952 set (14.5% complete) and PSA graded 1933 Goudey set (8.75% complete). Furthermore, because I am completely looking for a painful set I decided to throw in working on completing the 1914 Cracker Jack set as well (78/144). Will come back in and finish the '53,'54,'55,'56,'57,'59,'61,'63, and '65 over the next few years. (have to have something to do) Long live the set collector - the true lifeblood of the industry |
As a child, and collector, of the '70s, those are the sets I am working on. I am close or complete with most of the hockey and football, but have only the '74 and '76 complete in baseball, with fifty to go on '77.
I have greatly enjoyed the process of building, or mostly rebuilding, these sets, and will expand to basketball when I'm a little closer to closing out the rest. I admire you guys who are working on and completing the sets of the '50s and '60s, maybe I will get there some day. But for now, I'll enjoy my journey while admiring the pick-ups that get shown on the board. |

Partial Sets, groups & Complete set 1952-1972
While I posted that my current auction is open on the main board this morning, most people think of it as a pre-war auction.
I would like to post here to let you know there is a large number(nearly 200 lots) of starter sets, partial sets, groups, singles and complete sets from 1952 Topps thru 1972, along with some Bowman and Fleer. All can be seen at www.brockelmanauctions.com and registration is on the front page if you are not already registered. Scott |
new year.......new goals
Happy to say I ventured mostly away from graded cards and am currently working on the 1964 Topps baseball and 1967 Topps baseball set (for my dad). Its going to be fun to put together these raw sets and a challenge I'm sure for some of the cards. May also venture into the 1963 and 66 sets but don't have a single card from those years as of yet. Also going to work on a 64 Topps football set. Just wanted to share and enjoy reading others ventures.
So heres what I'm working on this year 1964 Topps Baseball 1967 Topps Baseball 1977 Topps Baseball 1978 OPC Baseball 1978 Topps Baseball 1979 Topps Baseball 1984 Donruss Baseball 1964 Topps Football hit me up if anybody has any extras floating around and we can trade etc.. Happy Collecting!! |

Right now I am over halfway finished with a 65 Philadelphia football set. After that, it will probably be another 60s football set and probably a 60s baseball set. I am undecided on which one though. I have actually thought about 67 Topps. About what grade range you going for on your 67? |
Quote:
Awesome Robert!!!! Wow I didn't know you were selling that 65 topps set...ouch. I'm going for vg or better on all cards for the 67 set Robert. Its going to be slow cause I can't see paying high money for the high number cards especially commons. Never made sense to me. They say.....and who are they????...lol, that they might be short print but I also said that of the 65 topps football SP's and there never seemed to be a shortage out there on ebay, etc etc. Anyway sorry to rant. Good to hear from you brother! I think I have a few 65 phillys here at home and if I find em .......they are yours brother. Still have your address and phone number. Take care and hope to hear from you soon |

I am in constant flux. I bounce from set to set and from collection to collection. I am passionate for a while, then I have to step away. So, I collect cards, comics, Olympic autographs, and records. I occasionally pick up an old radio when I am inclined. So, what I tell you I am working on could change in a week. But, as of now, here's where I am:
Baseball: Topps 1973-2017 completed all major sets 1971 & 1966 Topps also complete 1972 Topps 74% 1970 Topps 87% The rest of the 60's I am hovering in the 40-70% range. I have some big cards, but still need a few. 1959 Topps: 30% 1958 Topps: 96% 1957 Topps: 28% 1956 Topps: 23% (but I do have Mantle) 1955 Topps: 47% (but I have Clemente, Koufax, Killebrew, Williams, Mays) 1955 Bowman: 32% (Have Mantle and Mays) 1954 Topps: 16% (Have Aaron, Williams 250) 1954 Bowman: 85% (Need Mantle, skipping Williams) 1953 Topps: 21% (Have Mantle) 1953 Bowman: 8% (Have Mantle and Musial) 1952 Bowman: 37% (Have Musial and several other HOFers, still need Mantle and Mays) 1952 Topps: Only collecting low numbers, Have only about 20 cards so far. Working on R313, R314 from 1936 - About 25% Football: I have complete Topps run from 1968-end minus a handful of 1972 High numbers. Completed 1954 Bowman, 1956 Topps, 1958 Topps, 1960 Topps. Need 4 cards for 1960 Fleer. Need a few for 57 and 59. The remainder of the 1960's is all over the place, but most of the sets are in good shape with me having big chunks. I could finish any of them at almost any time with some effort. Got a lot ahead of me. I would like to finish the 1960's for football this year (or come really close) and finish baseball back to 68. But, like I said, stuff happens and I may sork just the opposite. |
Down to one card for a 1971/72 Topps Basketball set - Tiny Archibald RC.
Gotta love the design of the cards and the fact that so many of them feature guys wearing their jersey backwards. After finishing that one, I'm not sure where I'll be focusing on next. Maybe '62 Topps or '55 Bowman Baseball or '69 or '73 Topps Football. Or maybe something else. |
That is my favorite basketball set of all time. Good choice!

I haven't updated in a while, so here goes. I am up to 196 different cards for my 1962 Topps set. I've traded for most and have a whopping $2 into it.
I bought the Maris for $50 and a lot of probably 50 different from Northviewcats for $42 ($92). I then turned around and traded the Maris for a Baugh RC and Jimmy Brown 2nd year card (1959). From there, I sold the Baugh for $90 after fees/shipping, so am back down to having $2 into the set. That said, I don't have any of the major stars like Maris, Mantle, Mays, etc. But have several of the Ruth cards, LL cards (Clemente, Koufax, etc.) and several other HOFers (Marichal, Spahn, Brooks Robinson, etc.). So I'm making progress on it. I also finished the 1974 Topps set, but now I'm going back through and upgrading. I'm having to upgrade about 60 of the cards, including 4-5 HOFers. The majority of them are being upgrading due to creasing, severe centering issues or just being rough (rounded corners, tears on the edge, etc.). Finally, I bought a nice starter lot of about 400 different 1971 Topps cards. Included about 50 high #s as well as some various stars. Pulled about 20 or so that were creased or had severe centering issues, paper loss, etc. So about halfway down with that set. Haven't started working on it yet. |

Matt, I have a bunch of T205 in the trade thread in case you are interested. They are all SGC graded.
I’d sell or trade but I do have a pending bulk deal that might take some / all of them ( there is over 100 of them to choose from). First come first served:p Quote:
