MNF/Cosell

This isn't really a ticket, per se, but an employee game pass, that has an interesting story. I picked this up with a very large lot of stubs and employee items. This gentleman worked for the Eagles for like 10 years, and saved alot of neat items. This game in particular was the Eagles first Monday night game in their history. The Eagles employee got the pass signed by Eagles owner Leonard Tose, Howard Cosell, Don Meredith, Irv Cross, and Tom Woodeshick. The fact Cosell and Meredith signed the pass is pretty neat given what happened during that game. Leonard Tose threw a pregame party (Tose was a big drinker himself) and Cosell convinced him to open up the bar early. Cosell had a few too many vodka martinis at the party, and was noticeably drunk during the MNF telecast, to the extreme of throwing up on Don Meredith's boots. Cosell only made it through the first half, with Meredith and Keith Jackson doing the second half alone.

Early Detroit baseball tickets

Joe,
Cripes, those early Detroit baseball tickets are incredible! Did you see the 1800's Base Ball dance ticket from Crystal, MI that is currently for sale in the B/S/T section? Check it out as it would seeingly be a great addition to your collection...

ticket album

Quick question for you ticket collectors. I collect all things Philadelphia Eagles, and have probably around 300 Eagles ticket stubs with dates ranging from the 40's up until my current day season tickets. My question is regarding the way I want to organize/display these. I was thinking about putting them all in an album in chronologic order, but am unsure what type of album sleeves would work. Obviously the tickets are of all different sizes, and I don't think any specific type of album page would work for the different varieties. Something like the older type of photo album with the adhesive backing and plastic sheet on top would work, but I don't want to place these stubs on any type of adhesive. Anyone have any suggestions for me? If others have similiar stub collections, what do you do with them?

Oldtix 01-19-2010 09:25 AM

I use Ultra-Pro Semi-Rigid Card Holders for my tickets. I file my tickets in date order - this makes it easy to add new pick-ups into my collection. They're pretty cheap (about $16 per box of 200), they're thin, they keep the tickets firmly centered and they keep the weight down vs. rigid sleeves. I don't collect Eagles tickets (I have the one below because it's from the JFK assassination weekend), but here's an example for you to reference. Larger sizes are available (including a "Tall" version that is the same height).

I keep most of my paper collectibles from postcards to movie posters in mylar sleeves, but I haven't found a small mylar holder I'm happy with yet (Mylar is more likely to shred your fingertips too).

Question about how to store tickets in an album

I store my no-hitter ticket collection in 3 1/2" x 7 1/4" ticket top loaders in 3 pocket pages. It's an ideal way to store a collection in chronological order.
I hope that helps!

Two of the greatest

events (there weren't many!) in the history of the Washington Senators are represented by these ticket stubs:

1924 World Series - Walter Johnson wins Game 7 in relief in the 12th inning for his first WS victory (he was the losing pitcher in Games 1 & 5) and for the Senators only WS win. Ironically, Johnson was the losing pitcher in Game 7 of the 1925 WS, after winning Games 1 & 4, the latter by a shutout.

1925 World Series - Sam Rice made an incredible and controversial catch, falling over the centerfield fence into the spectators sitting in the temporary seats to rob Earl Smith of a home run and preserve a one-run victory in Game 3 for the Senators; inasmuch as Rice disappeared from the sight of the umpires and players, the Pirates argued to no avail that Rice had dropped the ball. The fan who attended this game with this ticket would have been sitting in these temporary seats and presumably would have witnessed the catch.

1974 playoffs

Oct 8 - 9th, 1974 playoffs between the Dodger and the Pirates. No big deal in the grand scheme of tickets, but for me it was. My buddy and I had mailed in to try and purchase tickets for the Dodger Bleachers for these games and were lucky enough to get them. This was less than a month after we started our freshman year in High School and we were wondering how we were going to convince our parents to let us go. Well, the stars were aligned just right because that year, it turns out, another High School that had a major fire just a month before was going to share our campus and so we went on a half day/split schedule...leaving our afternoons free. My buddy and I were able to take the bus from neighboring Alhambra to Dodger Stadium and then my Mom was able to come pick us up after work. Stargell hit a homerun in both games and Garvey hit two (we came close to catching one of them) in the deciding game. Great memories.

Ticket stub for an Indianapolis ball game. Not sure that I can really determine anything from it??? Also below is a letter with the same signature that is on the ticket from the President of the Indianapolis baseball club, James A. Perry. He died shortly after the letter was written, in a plane crash.

Any info on the ticket stub would be greatly appreciated.

Great stuff!

Here are some interesting tickets of recent vintage... I've got a whole collection of images (mostly Mets tickets) on Flickr...

September 24, 1975: full unused ticket to see the Red Sox v. Yankees at Shea Stadium during the period of Yankee Stadium renovation... this is the only ticket of the ones I'm sharing in this post that I bought on the collectors' market...

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4040/...83b936aa_b.jpg

October 2, 2004: the penultimate Montreal Expos game, and their very last victory...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3275/...fe6540f5_b.jpg

I got these tickets on Ebay for a terribly low price - I think it was $25 for the pair ($64 face value per ticket), just shows you how bad the Mets were back in '04 that the guy who had these 8th row field box tickets near third base was willing to let them go for just $12.50 apiece...

July 15, 2008: the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium... both sides of the ticket are shown...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3293/...d77f77d7_b.jpg

Interesting story regarding how I got this All-Star ticket... I didn't actually attend the game, but I was outside the ballpark taking pictures of Yankee Stadium and environs... I found this ticket, believe it or not, on the counter at the McDonald's on River Avenue and 161st Street during the game. I waited a few minutes until it was apparent nobody claimed it, so I took it... didn't bother trying to go to the game, I was just happy to get it as a collector's item... incidentaly, that brown stripe on the bottom of the front is supposed to include authentic Yankee Stadium dirt, that's what it says on the back.

September 12, 2008: a ticket from the very last game to be rained out at the original Yankee Stadium... the game was re-scheduled for the next day as part of a day-night doubleheader...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3136/...1a1e9c44_b.jpg

September 20, 2008: the final DAY game at the original Yankee Stadium... this ticket is for a seat in the first row of the Tier Reserved, and the "obstructed view" refers to the continuous flow of fans in the aisle directly in front of the row...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3267/...4ebc71fa_b.jpg

September 28, 2008: season ticket/planholders' ticket to the final game at Shea Stadium...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3174/...99a2f41a_b.jpg

April 13, 2009: the very first regular season game at Citi Field...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3036/...1669d2a5_b.jpg

April 20, 2009: the very first game to be rained out at the new Yankee Stadium...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3555/...b991fc74_b.jpg

Interesting story: when I was buying my tickets for 2009 Yankee games, I wanted to go as early as possible... I was already going to see the Mets on Saturday 4/18, so I decided my first game at the new Yankee stadium would be the Tuesday night game, 4/21... after I bought the ticket, I realized Monday 4/20 would be the first NIGHT game, so I subsequently bought 4/20 and said that either I'd go the next night as well or "eat" the ticket... as it happened, 4/20 got rained out so my original choice, 4/21, became the first night game at the new ballpark... giving me two "firsts" instead of one.

July 18, 2009: "print-at-home" ticket to the second of Paul McCartney's three concerts at Citi Field... I went to all three shows, and I've got hard tickets for them all... I found this "print-at-home" ticket discarded on the ground after the show, and since it was printed in color, on good paper, and except for being folded was still in good condition, I decided to keep it... this digital image deletes the personal information of the original buyer, as well as the barcode...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3490/...1bf2278f_b.jpg

April 19, 2010: New York Mets' rookie sensation Ike Davis' Major League Debut... from a collecting standpoint this season ticket/planholders' ticket is more "complete" than most of the others you'll see, because it includes the little area to the left of the perforations from where the ticket was supposed to be torn out of the book...

Seattle Mariner tickets

Not vintage but to me I think it is pretty cool. Around 1995 I purchased a ticket for the Seattle Mariners first game ever played at the Kingdome. Not that rare to find here in the Seattle area. Flash forward to the final year in the Kingdome, when single game tickets went on sale I purchased the exact same seat location for the last Mariner game to be played in the Kingdome. I remember the lady at the Mariners office giving me a weird look when I asked for a completely random upper deck seat location in the middle of the row when their was so many other seats open at the time. I have the two tickets sitting in a box somewhere just keep putting it off getting them framed up. How many people can say that they have a ticket (same seat location) to the first and last game at a stadium for their favorite team?

GrayGhost 07-05-2010 06:55 AM

GREAT idea Mike. Would look awesome framed w a stadium pic or a couple autographs, etc.

One of my personal favorites from my no-hit ticket collection is this full, unused ticket from Catfish Hunter's perfect game on May 8th, 1968. Very few people attended this game (attendance 6298- lowest ever in a perfect game), making any example of this ticket scarce. Finding a full, unused ticket was insanely difficult as I am only aware that two exist in the hobby! I found mine about 6-8 years ago in a major auction.
Enjoy!

Scott, that Catfish Hunter perfect game ticket is sweet! Catfish was always one of my favorite players.
I've been meaning to ask you about your no hit ticket collection. Sounds like you have quite a few. Besides the obvious "very old tickets", are there any more recent tickets that you've had a hard time finding (lack of attendance, etc)? Just curious.
Also, did anyone get a chance over the 4th of July weekend to see the MLB channel and their show about perfect games. It was pretty good, but what made it real interesting, at least for me, was something I didn't realize. I'm watching as Tom Browning throws a perfect game and who catches the last out...Paul O'neil...and there he is again as both Wells and Cone throw perfect-o's. How unusual that one player would participate in 3 no hitters, let alone perfect games.

Mike,
Thanks! I always liked Catfish as well.

Great question! Since baseball attendance is up over the last 20-25 years there aren't many recent no-hitter and perfect game tickets that I would call scarce, but there are a few. Here are some that I believe are a challenge to find:

Mike Witt's perfect game (season ticket) on 9/30/84 at Texas
Joe Cowley's no-no on 9/19/86 at Anaheim
Mark Langston, Mike Witt combo no-hitter 4/11/90 at Anaheim
Kent Mercker, Mark Wohlers, Pena combo no-hitter 9/11/91 at Atlanta
Anabal Sanchez (season ticket) 9/6/06 at Miami

BTW, I'm still missing a few from the 1960's and 1970's for my collection. Because I don't own them already, I know these are tough to find. I would love to locate these and would pay a finders fee to anyone that can help me locate them:

Ken Johnson 4/23/64 at Houston
Dave Morehead 9/16/65 at Boston
Don Wilson 6/18/67 at Houston
Ray Washburn 9/18/68 at SF
Bill Stoneman 4/17/69 at Philadelphia
Don Wilson 5/1/69 at Cincinnati
Jim Palmer 8/13/69 at Baltimore
Vida Blue 9/21/70 at Oakland
Bill Stoneman (2nd) 10/2/72 at Montreal
Steve Busby (1st) 4/27/73 at Detroit
Phil Niekro 8/5/73 at Atlanta
Jim Colborn 5/14/77 at Kansas City

Thanks!:D

Anybody here ever seen this ticket? Actually, that's a silly question, because the answer is almost certainly "no," so let me rephrase--does anybody have any information on the event? "Babe Ruth" game ticket

Jonathan,
The date, style and information printed on this gives me the impression that it is from an unidentified barnstorming exhibition game following the 1916 baseball season, FWIW. As I'm sure you are well aware, Ruth and other baseball players from the era would play in barnstorming games after the regular season ended. This was a way that players could substantially add to their yearly earnings.
BTW, Boston had just won their 2nd consecutive World Series Championship in 1916 when this game was played. Ruth was arguably the best pitcher in baseball in 1916. Babe Ruth, in his World Series debut had a 14 -inning victory in the longest and one of the most exiting World Series games ever played.
Ruth would have probably pitched in this exhibition game since he had not fully transitioned into a position player at this point in his career.
I'm sorry that I can't offer any more clues as to the specifcs of this particular game, but perhaps one of the other members can help with identifying it.

Scott,

Thanks for your response. We came to the same conclusion as you, but obviously we'd love to be able to help our consignor out a bit more with some reference in a local newspaper or a similar bit of documentation. The libraries in the area we've contacted have come up empty though. We don't doubt the legitimacy of the ticket whatsoever, but it would be cool to provide our bidders with a few more details. But, again, I appreciate your comments and agree with them completely.

If you have a copy of The Year Babe Ruth Hit 104 Home Runs by Bill Jenkinson, there could be some information in it that will help you. BTW, an outstanding book that furthered my respect and support of Ruth as the greatest ever.

The author scoured every source imaginable, and referenced many barnstorming events in the book. I hope you find it in there; I gave my copy away otherwise I'd check for you.

Here are my three favorite. While Army has been on the losing side of the Notre Dame rivalry, Ive always respected the matchup.

- The 1928 stub is the famous "Win one for the Gipper" Game. (I still feel my stub should have come back a PSA 4)
- The 1930 full is from Rockne's last season and last game against Army.
- The 1946 full is one of the first "Game of the Century" games with #1 vs #2. Army was National Champions that year, dont tell me otherwise.

Scott...Thanks for the offer , I will remember it. I really do like that ticket and have always wonderd if there are any photos of that day and game.
The tour ticket pictures a young Eddie Mathews. The WS ticket is for game 7 of the series that sadly, for White Sox fans, did not take place. Front office guy Don Unferth had a group of these in his desk drawer.

Just picked this up over the weekend. It's actually 2 tickets, held together by the remnants of a staple (hence the rust marks). Last year of the Crackers, visiting Buffalo.

Here's the season ticket version of the ticket from Johan Santana's 2012 no-hitter against St. Louis, the first no-no in Mets' history.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7105/...6560276c_z.jpg

The team later offered reprints of these tickets - I believe season ticket holders got reprints of the tickets for their seats free, plan holders could buy reprints at a reduced rate, and the general public could buy them for $50 (I think) apiece. The Mets said the reprints would be exactly the same as the originals, but when I received mine I noticed the line "Season Ticket" did not appear on the reprint.

Ironically, Mets' season tickets are usually issued in a spiral-bound book, in strips of four, but in 2012 they were issued in shrinkwrapped bricks of individual tickets. Had 2012 season tickets been issued spiral-bound, it would have been easier to distinguish reprints because the originals would have had perforations on one or two sides, whereas the reprints have straight edges on all sides.

And speaking of reprints... here's a "souvenir commemorative" ticket to Roy Halladay's perfect game against the Florida Marlins, May 29, 2010. The Marlins sold tickets to the seats that went unsold for the actual game as souvenirs after the fact. Unfortunately, they charged the actual ticket price for the reprints, instead of a nominal reduced rate. So this ticket cost me $16.00 plus fees and such.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1332/...97f3d5dd_z.jpg

Note the A10JUN0 date in the lower left corner - this indicates the date the ticket was printed (6/10/10), proving this ticket was printed AFTER the game and thus is a "souvenir commemorative" ticket and not an actual ticket that was used, or could have been used, to attend the game. So at least it'll be easy to identify "real" tickets from these "souvenirs."

Fortunately, I knew I wasn't buying anything that would wind up being valuable - I did it for fun - but I wonder how many of these were sold after the fact, presumably to people who thought they were getting something good.

Ted Williams-Cleveland pass

1 Attachment(s)
Not quite a ticket, but this pass was my holy grail for quite some time....

1960 Indians season pass-the splendid splinter hit 29 homers in his final season with 5 of them against the Indians on their home turf. Among the 5 were Ted's #500, and #513 to pass Mel Ott who at the time stood only behind Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx.

Very happy to finally have this one in the collection!

A few cool baseball tickets to share...

Here are some of my favorite baseball tickets that are not related to no-hitters:

1) Nolan Ryan ML debut and 1st strikeout full, unused ticket. Very scarce, I know of only two of these full tickets in the hobby.

2) Nolan Ryan 1st win ticket stub. Another toughee, I only know of 4 of these existing

3) Nolan Ryan 383 K and Sandy Koufax 382 K ticket stubs. Nolan's ML record 383 K's in a season will likely never be broken. Sandy Koufax's NL and lefty single season record is also an amazing record in its own right!

4) Tom Cheney's ML record of 21 K's in a 15 inning game. Cheney is the only pitcher to ever strike out 21 in a ML game & this is the only ticket that I have ever seen to this historic game.

5) A full ticket to a 19 inning marathon game that featured HOF's Rapid Robert Feller pitching 9 innings and Satchel Paige pitching 10 innings in relief.
The game was played on July 1, 1952 at CLE. Cool game!

When you say "I know of only two of these" you're referring to the full, untorn ticket (as opposed to a stub), correct? Either way, it's still an awesome piece.

Gary,
Correct! The full, unused ticket. A fair amount of the stubs to his debut game are out there. I suspect that I have seen at least 15 of these...

For those of you that didn't get Randall's inside joke:
I own the Cheney 21 K ticket because of an unselfish trade that the two of us made several years ago that cemented what has become a great friendship. Thanks again, Randall for filling this hole in my collection. ;) :)

Joe D Ties Willie Keeler's mark for consecutive hits.

Last Night I pulled out some stuff out of storage and saw a box that had some scrapbooks from the late 30's early 40's. They were from a Red Sox fan living in NYC. I know this because all the ticket stubs are from Yankee game and almost all the box scores are Red Sox. Taking a suggestion from a board member I am trying to get some stubs from Home run games from 500 HR club members to go on my display. So I start reading and find an early Williams and a nice Foxx stub. Then I get to this page....Joe Dimaggio ties Willie Keeler for consecutive hit streak. Field box stub so has date!! Streak stubs are rare and I have never seen this one before my new favorite stub... and my old favorite an 1885 Providence stub from their last year in the National League.

Just snagged this one. Greatest game ever pitched. Kerry Woods 5th start and he gets a complete game, 20 strikeout, 1 hit shutout. And does it against the Astros who would win 102 games! According to Bill James' pitching "Game Score" system it rates a 105 with none higher. The only hit he gave up was an infield hit. the highest possible game score would be a 114. That would be a 27strikeout complete Perfect Game.

Game Score is a metric devised by Bill James to determine the strength of a pitcher in any particular baseball game. To determine a starting pitcher's game score:

Start with 50 points.
Add one point for each out recorded, so three points for every complete inning pitched.
Add two points for each inning completed after the fourth.
Add one point for each strikeout.
Subtract two points for each hit allowed.
Subtract four points for each earned run allowed.
Subtract two points for each unearned run allowed.
Subtract one point for each walk.
