Tony, I love that Red Man card that Bob made!!! How cool would it have been if the Mick had been in all four RM sets? Yeah, that's how cool.

Probably a lot of these around, but I have a couple of postcards from the "Holiday Inn of Joplin, Missouri operated by Mickey Mantle.' Mick is pictured in the Dugout Lounge at the Inn.

Wholeheartedly agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!:) Bob did a beautiful job on that Red Man Mantle. I carefully placed mine in a mylar SNUG, made by Bill Cole Enterprises, then in a thick Capital Plastics four-screw holder. I would proudly display it with original period Mantles because it's a beautiful work of art.

In the same theme, Bob Lemke did a swell job on his creation of a complete 1963 JELL-O Black Raspberry box with the free prize card being Mickey Mantle. However, Bob did not do a reprint as such. Using the gorgeous advertising poster photo of Mick that JELL-O displayed in supermarkets and grocery stores at the gelatin aisle, Bob cropped the best part of the photo and gave his JELL-O box this variant photo of Mickey. Looks spectacular.:D

Fantasy Mickey Mantle cards, if they're done well, find a very appreciative fan in me. ---Brian Powell

The center 2 boxes are Bobs amazing Mantle Jello Boxes. I bought the originals from him and have made them as small as a quarter up to real size with Jello inside the box. They make great display pieces.

Ben -- Thanks, pal, for coming to my rescue with a nice photo of Bob's 1963 JELL-O Mickey Mantle creation.

I wondered when the Dice Game Mantle would make an appearance. Thought you were holding out, Bob. :)

And major CONGRATS, Leon! Nice eye appeal on that one.

Chris, why doesn't the 68 game card have rounded corners? Is yours a proof?

I've seen them referred to as proofs--and I think one of the major grading companies slabs them proofs--but my thought has always been that someone just cut down a previously uncut sheet to make this.

As you should, MikeGarcia. The 1960 Post Cereal Mickey Mantle is a choice, elegant, and breathtaking Mickey Mantle masterpiece. Obviously, it's one of my own favorites, as I placed it dead center on the cover of my newly-released book, NEVER CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN.

Congrats on having that Mantle--what a prime conversation piece!:D ---Brian Powell

This is an old pickup you might say. Growing up in northern nj, my neighbor across the street was harold rosenthal...a sportswriter for the herald tribune. He wrote many books on football and a few on baseball. He sent mickey mantle a letter asking him some questions in 1951. This is a copy of it...he donated the original to the hall of fame...I wonder if they ever display it?

gomaz 06-15-2016 11:51 AM

Well not a recent pickup but I've only been lurking here for a couple weeks so figured I'd show off one of my best pickups in my 37 years of collecting.

Bought it in September 2007 on eBay quite impulsively. I was just starting to expand out from hockey (as I had recently achieved my goal of having the rookie card of every 1000 point man in NHL history) and into the other three major sports and after winning the auction I had some big time buyers remorse as it appeared I had overpayed by around 25%.

Here was the situation...I did no research prior to bidding, I placed said bid in the last few seconds of the auction, and only discovered the auction in its last few minutes. Point being I had no idea what I was doing, five minutes before buying the card I had no plans to buy one so soon, all I knew was that it was a really nice Mantle rookie card and if I was going to pursue baseball HOF rc's, may as well start with one of the best.

So what ended up being a very impulsive purchase that I overpaid for at the time has turned out to be one of the best buys of my hobby career, almost nine years later.

So here it be in all its glory:

Not sure where or what this is from, but picked it up at a local shop for a pretty good price. Not even sure if it's gradable.

The tape is on the custom made plastic holder and not on the cardboard.

The back is a plain brown colorlike you see on the bazooka cards.

This is from a Mantle board game published by Garner called "Big League All Stars," or something like that. It came with a couple of pieces and people have broken up the game to sell them individually. These playing cards are cool but I believe they are too large for PSA to grade. I've never looked in to SGC. They aren't terribly rare but the color and design are great. Cool item.

Thanks, I actually have the last two in transit, although I settled for a nice looking PSA 6 for the 69. The rest of my 60s Mantles are 7 or 8, so I'll look for an upgrade down the road. I also want to get a centered 60 to replace mine as it's a little off.
