If you are referring to the 1978-? numbered pins a complete set isn't even known.

Agreed...although storing 190 of those size pins may take up some room. I'd have to believe that someone attempted it.

One of today’s antique store rescues, a really great 1930’s Blue Sox pitcher pinback button from the ACC PR3–11 set.

Thanks for the link Cliff. I would think if someone fully completed it they would be bragging about it and deservedly so. I pick up the orioles but never had much interest in any others. Got a couple of the uncut sheets somewhere.

Picked up a rough little Cubs pinback. I thought it might be a Crane’s button but it’s unmarked on the back.

Another couple of weeks and I’ll finally get all my stuff out of storage. Maybe then I’ll be able to find my Muchinsky book and not be in the dark so much.

Hey Andy,
Dr Paul has a three inch one in his book. T-64.

Just a heads-up on the newest TSOG episode, which features vintage Pins.

We did lots of filming, and after editing we'll be dividing it into 4 separate segments of Pins. Here's the first episode, which focuses on the 1910 time-frame...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqOSqnCLm_I&t=6s

More to come throughout the year so please stay tuned, and thanks for watching!

Very nicely done and look forward to the future episodes!!!!

The two smaller boxes are from obscure online auctions and the larger box was a 50’s to 80’s collection that I’m going to cherry pick and then sell the rest.

We would all love it if you would show some photos as you’re going through the boxes. You know. Living vicariously.

Yes, pictures, please! This must be the greatest pinbacks "find" of all time!

I’m just as excited to show these finds as I hope you are to see them. My Muchinsky book is still in storage somewhere so if anyone has any insight from the book about these, I would appreciate it.

Here’s the first box.

Two beautiful 1967 St. Louis Cardinals pinbacks. Apparently their first base coach nicknamed them El Birdos and the nickname took off.

I need to do some work on the ribbon to flatten it some, but these two pinbacks are beautiful.

Here’s a link about El Birdos - https://mosportshalloffame.com/induc...uis-cardinals/

Here’s box number two, if you’re still following…

I think the photo speaks for itself…and one of the things I love is vintage rust on the back of a pinback button.

The Berra must be an early one since he’s “Larry” there, and the light, eggshell blue is beautiful!

Here is box number three from the large collection that I bought. It is very Red Sox heavy and 1970s heavy. I’m probably going to keep the large PM10 pins as well as the two crossed bat ones but much of the rest may be available if anyone sees anything interesting.

There's that Bill Lee Red Sox black box pin that someone told me about a couple of years ago but didn't provide a scan, I will add it to the checklist now. I think that is the only black box or numbered pin I see in all of those that isn't already on the checklists. That's quite a haul.

Thanks, Cliff! Glad that I was able to contribute something! Sad that they chose such a terrible close-up shot of the spaceman for his pin. They could’ve pulled back a little bit better and made a better image.

The “black boxes” were all over the place in terms of quality. Here’s the good and the bad. I wouldn’t mind seeing some more of the bad. :p

Thanks, Hank. I think the Larry Berra in that light blue is my favorite out of all the ones that I got yesterday although I do really like those two el Birdos pinbacks from 1967 as well.

I hate to state the obvious.... But shouldn't it be "Los Birdos"?

It's damn hard for me to find a Giants pin I don't have, so when I saw this (cheap) D**gers flicker, I had an idea. It fits nicely in my D**ger hate pin case.

I sure hope Doug "Slayer > Pearl Jam" Goodman see it! :p

Below is some more content that Dodger fans won't love, and nothing that Rob doesn't already have. But the latest TSOG Video features some pretty cool Willie Mays Pinbacks.

Hope you enjoy, and thanks for looking!

That warmed my heart! As for the pin with the “Seals logo,” I always just assumed the Giants hadn’t settled on their SF logo yet. The 1958 Topps cards show everyone with the same Seals hat. I would imagine the pin and cards were put out before the season started. There is also a 3.375” version of the “Seals pin.”

P.S. Your wall mounted pin case is next level! Custom made?

perezfan 10-07-2023 10:41 AM

Thanks Rob... Impressive airbrushing on that one, and nice to "pin" down the time frame (sorry, couldn't resist!)

Those glass-front shadowbox cases are not custom-made. They were available at Aaron Bros. for quite a few years and I snapped up a bunch in two different sizes, back in the day. The size you see in the Mays episode is the smaller of the two.

Really a shame that Aaron Bros went out of business... they had so many supplies, easels, frames, mats and other things that were great for display. They were a cut above Michael's Crafts, and I miss them. That said, I'll try to look into whether those cases are still sold at another retailer or perhaps online.

Hi Mark loved the video wanted to add a few more to the post. A nice 3 1/4 harder to find thats the same as the 1 3/4 and the crazy hard 2 1/4 with the s/f logo on the cap... Dont you just love this stuff...

perezfan 10-08-2023 11:12 AM

Thanks Al...

Those variations must be super tough... especially the large one. Never even seen one of those offered for sale! I really love the "name at top" version as well. Now I'm on the lookout for one of those.

Much appreciated!
Mark

Attended the famous Fishersville, Va. antique show today for the first time. Pinbacks and sports stuff in general was hard to find. I did find one pinback dealer who had a few nice 1960’s buttons that I liked; Cranes, some NFL pins and a few Kelloggs jet planes that I wanted. Problem was, his prices were outrageous and he had a terrible attitude. He wouldn’t let anyone open any of the cases to pull out any button. I wanted to put a group together to see about getting a good price. He refused so I had to try to keep showing him button after button in trays and having him think about it to give me a price. His general customer service was atrocious and I was probably ready to spend $75 or $100 with him, but I simply walked away because of his nastiness.

I wandered around the antique sale a bit longer, and didn’t think I was going to find anything. I then spotted a vendor with a couple of display cases so I approached and saw that he had a number of different pinback buttons. He ended up having four baseball buttons. Two of them were from the American Nut and Chocolate series, a Brooklyn Dodgers and a Boston Braves button. Unfortunately, he had them both priced at $35 apiece. I asked him what his best price on those was and he said he could do both for $50 which was still too much. The Dodgers one was even scratched up some. He said he thought they might be rare and I explained to him that they are actually pretty common, and can generally be had for about 10 bucks or so apiece. Needless to say I didn’t buy those. Then I spotted these two gems. He had them priced at a very reasonable amount and thus they came home with me.

Over the past six months, I had a temporary move and now a more permanent one. During that time, all of my pinback finds from antique stores and random online auctions were ending up in various boxes, bags, etc.

While not arranged properly yet for display, I think this is most of them finally all in one place…although I know there’s still more somewhere.

Here is my collection displayed....and as mentioned, love the pins on the black background......I have a few new ones not shown.....including a new Mays which I didn't have.....

Really only collect 40's and 50's 1-3/4" pins.....Have a few 60's 1-3/4" pins....and some larger pins....but my focus is really PM10 Yankees, Dodgers and NY Giant pins......kind of quirky about that....don't like them smaller than 1-3/4' and the big ones are too hard to keep up with and display!

Its a sickness, I know.....

Well, if it’s a sickness, at least you have parameters! I really like the orange background Rosen. I’ve seen the yellow and aqua backgrounds, but never orange. Is that a rare pin?
