As long as there are least five zeroes at the start of the 8 figures.

Greg, I just wrote the same thing to Peter yesterday in an email. The contract would be a remarkable item but I cannot wrap my head around it being a 10 million dollar item.

Republicaninmass 08-23-2017 06:40 PM

Maybe he's including the 2 figures AFTER the decimal point?

Uncut full T206 sheet with Wagner....
If you cut it down you have a '10'.

sycks22 08-31-2017 07:53 AM

This might've been touched on, but I saw in a Heritage magazine that they're auctioning off Jackie's first jersey from his rookie year.

if thats what this golden goose is...no way it fetches 8 figure imo.

I think they are selling Michael Jordan's Mansion that Mike used to live at in Illinois..... North of Chicago or something

The email I got said they were auctioning a jersey used in his rookie season on Jackie Robinson day but not his first jersey (I am pretty certain but can't find the email now). They are expecting 2 million +

Your comment reminds me of a Yogi'ism. Questioning who will be watching while asking the channel? :) "No one goes there anymore it's too crowded"

That is correct. I was responding to a post about a Heritage auction.

"You mean now?"

conor912 09-06-2017 12:05 PM

Yeah, contracts. Boy...he's really putting himself on the line with this one. If it comes nowhere close to $36M I would think that'd be a whole lot of egg on Goldin's face.

Great items but not even close to 10 million, as I stated earlier. Not the first or last time he will go out on a limb and make a fool of himself but it has obviously not hurt his ability to bring in some great consignments.

The appraisal was from an outside party, so not sure they will look bad if it doesn't go that high. But he did say $10 million so that number is tied to him.

I think there's a chance that these are a focus of history and civil rights collectors far beyond the sports world. If that is the case, it could mean far more attention than items like Ruth items would get.

I don't see it getting $10 million, but I think it is the kind of item that has a chance... At the same time, it could also go for $1 million and I would not be surprised...

Peter_Spaeth 09-06-2017 12:17 PM

I hope that it ends up being accessible to the public.

btcarfagno 09-06-2017 12:26 PM

I will be a bit surprised if these don't get $10,000,000. It's two of the most important documents in the history of the United States.

For reference, or not, a 1949 Jackie contract sold earlier this year for 275K or so.

bn2cardz 09-06-2017 12:44 PM

To reiterate what I put in a previous post it is hard for me to fathom they would bring more money than George Washington's personal annotated copy of the Constitution and proposed Bill of Rights, which sold for just shy of $10mil in 2012.

If an African-American celebrity/celebrities get into a bidding war, it could.........

I don't think the appeal would be limited to African-Americans.

Maybe, but even 1 of 3 senate copies of the 13th amendment brought only (relatively speaking) 2.4mil in Sotheby's last year.

http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/...88/lot.79.html

It isn't my job to come up with estimates, so the experts may see something I don't.

There is something more visceral with regard to the civil rights movement however. While the 13th amendment ended the practice of slavery, the fact that 80+ years later Jackie Robinson's introduction to professional whites only baseball was such a major event speaks to the efficacy of the 13th amendment in terms of actual civil rights in practice. These two contracts played an enormous part in pushing forward civil rights in America. They are also tied to and signed by a beloved figure in recent American history. I don't know that they will go for $10 mil. I think there is a good chance that they will if the right people know about the auction.

I understand all of that, but you statement at the end expressing your potential doubt of the estimate is what I am talking about. These could go for 3x the 13 amendment and still not break the 10mil mark.

This is merely a thought provoking conversation as the answer will be known soon enough and we, potentially ,will have a new precedent for what an historical document could sell for.

“We look forward to an electric night of bidding on November 16th, but if the right buyer comes forward before the auction and can ensure these documents will be shared with the public, we’ll certainly consider a private sale.” At which point we might never get the answer.

I have never heard of an auction like that, are there precedents?

To answer my own question, it looks like the same thing happened with Piazza's 9/11 jersey last year.

I would rather have his first Dodgers jersey thannthe contracts. Jerseys help you feel the game and him actually playing, to me, surpasses the contracts. But that is me! Love jerseys.

That was my guess....and I would agree with you. It helps the $10 mil cause that there are two super important contracts and not just one.
