Nice Simon Chocolate card of Ali. I know the cartoonish image isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the Simon Chocolate card has long been one of my favorite Ali cards because it captures his personality so well.

Of course, I also like Superman-Ali Samlarsaker card as well. ;)

Peter_Spaeth 06-08-2017 08:26 AM

Which reminds me of an alleged conversation between Ali and an airline hostess.

Ali (protesting instruction to fasten his seat belt): Superman don't need no seat belt.

Hostess: Superman don't need no plane.

Picked these up yesterday at a card show. A trusted dealer had a stack of exhibit cards which I know nothing about, he said they were original, $2 each or 3 for $5. I said how much for the whole stack of 37? I bought them all for $25 three boxers, seven actors, one joke card, and twenty-five baseball players.

How much tougher are the boxing cards compared to the baseball players?

The boxing cards post-1930 are variable in terms of rarity. There are certain series that are very, very difficult to find, mostly from the depths of the Great Depression. The three you posted are a bit later and are common.

I'd have held out for an 11, Herb :D

Beautiful card. I hope he ices MacGregor quickly...

Thanks, I would only hold out for a PSA 11:rolleyes:
Haven't decided if this fight is worth my $100 and time. I hear the bets are now swaying in favor of Mac ???

Nice pick-ups Ed. I love the T226 Red Sun issue. You will find there are a handful of subjects that no matter how much money you have to offer it will take you years to locate. A tough set to complete!

Yeah, these are the only boxing cards I collect (probably why you don't see me post here much). I'm up to 19, I know where others I need are, but the price is always too much for the quality of the card. I'm not condition sensitive, but the price should be less for a more beat up card than a pristine one. I keep my eyes open, but yeah, I am sure my last card I will need is Langford. I'm also doing the T211, so I have a long, expensive road ahead of me. I can't think of much cooler than a complete T211/226 set, though.

Recent Pickups

Some recent additions with more interesting backs than fronts. The T220 Tolstoi Sullivan, Poor and mangled as it is, brings me to 41/50 on the tough Tolstoi set. Picked up the Dixie Queen Beecher on eBay recently for cheap. Traded with a friend for the C52 Ketchel, complete with somewhat creepy inscription on the reverse. I'll upgrade this last one down the line, if I can find another copy

Apologies, can't the pic down to the file size limit: https://imgur.com/a/sJyLU

Exhibitman 10-05-2017 11:01 AM

I was looking for one of these for years:

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...0Ali%20bag.jpg

And then it popped up on eBay. With this:

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...Ali%20port.jpg

Yeah, I got 'em both. 1975 St. John's Natural Ice Cream Ali premiums.

And this PC of Marcel Thil.

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...igned%20PC.jpg

A nice PC, but I'd not have picked it up, except that he signed the back.

and another Benny Leonard:

Actually that was a Hollywood photo from his movie career. The Fighting Marine married well; Polly Lauder, heiress to the Lauder cosmetics fortune.

You can still find deals on eBay. Got this t226 JJ in a mislabeled lot for cheap. Been waiting on this type card for a while.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5ecea01a54.jpg

Not really a boxing collector. But was intrigued by this 1947 Sugar Ray Robinson photo. A smiling Sugar Ray on the front contrasts the dated stamp on the back: the day he fought (and killed) Jimmy Doyle in his first defense of his title.

sthoemke 01-20-2018 11:51 PM

Looks like a press photo. The stamped date might be the publication date for a newspaper.

Picked this up at the beginning of the month....at an estate sale from a former MLB player....probably headed to auction in the future....only have seen 2 others signed on a ball.

Don't know what it is exactly but it was expensive:

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/HuMAA...iU/s-l1600.jpg

I suspect it is from a set that I've not been able to catalog but that has a Fitzsimmons that I've known of for years.

Exhibitman 02-12-2018 01:00 PM

More info on McGovern:

The card arrived today. It is machine-cut, measuring exactly 1.5" across and 2.25" tall. Blank back and thick cardboard. Similar to a Mayo in thickness. I thought it was a half-tone print but under magnification it is photo-engraved, which indicates it was created some time around the turn of the 20th century. Makes sense since McGovern's career ended in 1908.

I saw this card on eBay when it came up and was interested in what it was. Do you have a photo of the Fitzsimmons you mentioned earlier by chance? I’ve never seen anything from whatever this set was before

Picked this up after it was graded. It ended up a PSA 5.5. Looked 6ish to me, but I'm happy with it.

Not my wheelhouse but anything this old is worth the pickup... Anyone familiar with these and how rare (or not) they may be?

Thanks!

Exhibitman 02-26-2018 10:13 AM

I cover all the Exhibit cards in my book. The 1922 set is tougher than 1921, easier than 1923.
