February Pickups

First pickup of the year that replaces one I had bought when I was a kid that just did
not look good after looking it at more and more in today's times. Always wanted another.

Of all the 60s multi player cards, that is one of the greatest.

Mickey Mays 02-02-2017 03:12 PM

That's a great looking 6, one corner a little soft but the centering is great. Wonder what kept it from a 7..............

RayBShotz 02-02-2017 04:30 PM

Great image, great card!

Exhibitman 02-03-2017 02:50 PM

Nice 1.

This was the first Gehrig card I ever got, in 1973. I now have another one:

In "The Goonies" (1985) this is also the card that was found with Chester Copperpot's remains by the kids at the start of One-Eyed Willie's tunnel. Unfortunately it doesn't add up, as the character was supposed to have gone missing in 1935. Guess Stephen Spielberg wasn't a card collector...:)

I thought it was 1934 goudey that is in the wallet.

I haven't seen it in many years, but I am pretty sure the card used in the movie that one of the kids holds up for a split second is the '73 Topps Gehrig. It's possible I'm wrong. But I remember thinking that as a kid 25-30 years ago.

Doesn't fit anything I'm currently working on but all this talk about mid grade inspired me to chase this one.
Not sure you can find a better 5.
This one really jazzed me.

Beautiful Mantle 1953 in a 3 holder. I have a 2 and it's light years away from that one......congrats on the pickup!

Rookiemonster 02-09-2017 09:05 AM

Very nice pick ups folks ! I do enjoy the pick up thread every month .

brian1961 02-09-2017 12:03 PM

Ray--

I agree with your assessment on your killer '52 Bowman Hodges. Your mid-grade has ultra-high grade appearance, and really, that's what counts. I love it!!!!

The same thing happened to me with a 1951 Bowman Sammy Baugh. I bought it in the 70s 'cause I love the looks of the card, and the colors on mine are off the charts. Nevertheless, it came back a PSA 5. I'm not looking to upgrade!:D

If you're a big Gil Hodges fan, I would like to point you to a common card today with mesmerizing appearance and an enthralling story. Go to eBay, and search for Dormand Gil Hodges PSA. A MINT specimen can be had for very little, though watch for the pesky print spots and a fish-eye in the rich dark green grass. Not that many years ago, that PC was the white whale in the Dormand PC set. I discuss the find in my book, NEVER CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN. I personally bought an SGC mint specimen from a board member here, and it looks super in their holder.

A Dormand Hodges will probably never rise much in value, but it is so beautiful and was made in that great era of 1952 to 1955. Not trying to hijack anything, just thought I would put in a plug for the Dormand Gil. No, I only own my one copy! There's few of you who don't know about this beauty. ---Brian Powell

jchcollins 02-10-2017 02:09 PM

I don't own any, but the Dormand's are very pretty cards and of course some of those stars can be had in nice shape for a fraction of the price of a comparable Topps or Bowman issue.

I waited a long time to find this card. Best 6 I could find and paid a bit of a premium for it but not the sky high prices of higher grades. My main concern was finding one with no print issues, especially in the yellow area on the left. Sorry the photo is lame.

Go Dodgers!

Thank, Neal.

That white dot/spec above his right arm looks like a piece of lint caught between the card and the slab? It's hard to tell for sure, but that's what it looks like to me without using a loupe or a magnifier. It bothers me a bit, but I also don't feel like cracking the slab.

Guess it's time to invest in a loupe, if that would help, which I assume it would?

Thoughts?

my first thought was that it was a piece of dust/lint ON the slab .... which really show up on SGC holders. If it is inside the slab, I am sure that SGC would reholder it no charge

I was wondering that, so that is good to know. :)

Guess I should still invest in a loupe first just in case it isn't.

Thanks.

I appreciate the info!

I got him through the mail a few years ago. He signed my card and answered some questions I wrote. His inscription on the question sheet was "To Drew. stay Psyched! Al Hrabosky". One of my favorite responses.

I've been after a Musial Rookie for a while now. Finally pulled the trigger! The Mk is for a back stamp and I actually don't mind those on the older cards.

That's fine, but you do understand that it isn't his rookie card. My personal preference is for the 1948 Bowman RC over the 1949 Leaf. I think that 1949 Leaf is the ugliest post war set.

Yes I do understand it. I've read that some people feel the 49 Leaf is the ugliest postwar set but I think a lot of it has to do with horrible miscuts and registry errors neither of which this example has.
