That is a really nice-looking card.

I’m torn re Rose. I’m working on a HOF collection, so he’s obviously not included, and buying his cards kind of makes me queasy for equally obvious reasons.

And yet…he has some great-looking cards, with those mid-60s Reds uniforms. And I got into collecting cards as a kid in 1986, when the first cards in the Topps set had his earlier cards all lined up. So those cards became almost mythical to me, and I still get a little twinge of that feeling when I think about owning them.

Are you torn then because you collect HOF and he's not HOF and may never be?

Otherwise, I feel like the community holds him up as equal to a HOF and his prices definitely are in line.

I just love well-centered '63 Fleers. I am getting close to finishing the set, have 51 out of 64 now. Demeter is one of my favorites from the set- he looks like Sheldon from Big Bang.

I’m torn because of his…character issues. The credible statutory rape allegations even more so than the gambling, although the gambling is a major issue as well. Just not the kind of guy I want to spend a bunch of money on for cards.

Not high end obviously, but one I’ve wanted for awhile. I think a 4 on postwar vintage is a nice compromise between affordability and eye appeal.

It's always tough and a bit of a line to cross when we expect too much in the way of our sports heroes being (necessarily...) good at other areas of their life. The HOF on the whole has what's probably a pretty low bar to clear; there are alcoholics and drug users in the HOF, there are wife beaters and criminals. Other HOF's other places have enshrined murderers. Pete's problem is mainly that the 3rd rail he chose to step on was one so tightly wound to the game he loves, hence the harshest judgment possible that was handed down. But does it really make him a continually terrible person who is not worthy of respect for what he did on the field? I'm torn on the issue myself. Have been ever since it happened when I was 12. But my observation just for the moment is that it's problematic for baseball, or any sport - when some of their major record holders, the guys that did the huge things - cannot be enshrined for such reasons.

This has always been a tough raw card to find centered, especially top to bottom, imo, so, while just looking at other 52's, I came across this one and decided to grab it up.
It is not perfect but I believe this is the most centered one I have ever seen when searching for raw cards.

Absolutely! This was on the want list for a long time. Definitely one of the top 3 cards in my collection now.

I came close to settling for lower eye appeal cards but Jarrod helped steer me back on track.

Thanks. I will agree it's a pretty card. Also interesting if you look, the font for "Frank" in his name at the top is about .5 of a row higher than "Robinson Outfield." There were some strange things going on in the early series in '67.

Yep. There are other typesetting oddities in the '67 set. Part of it's charm to me.

jchcollins 11-12-2021 06:26 AM

Not doing the '53 set or anything, but I've always liked Haddix and the story of his 12 inning near-perfect game in 1959. Love the fact that my town (Winston-Salem, NC) is mentioned on the back of this card - Harvey played here in 1947 in the minors.

The grade here appears to be based only on centering, which is a shame. The corners are 6-7 quality. I'll take that kind of undergrading all day long...

Talk about rabbit trails. I had to go pull all my 67T Frank Robinson cards, and yep, the first name is high and outside on every one.

And on another note, I went to the LCS yesterday to get supplies, and they had a new case set up for a new consignor. So of course I had to buy some random cards. Here is the best of them.

Went to a card show in St. Louis today. It was my first show in about five years, and I cannot believe how well attended it was. I have sort of been messing around with completing a third 1973 set, the first year I started collecting. Picked all of these up for $200, including this awesome complete set of blue team checklists. In great condition and unmarked. I had always been interested in them, but hardly ever saw them. I asked the dealer what he would take for the complete set, and he gave me a great price. Glad I went! PS. Still no idea how you guys upload pics to this site.

Dan, do you have a pic file saved on your computer where you download pics too?
I use "My Documents" on my computer and use that to upload cards from there to here.

I'll try my best here:

First thing is, below every post that you post in (scroll down slightly) you will see "manage attachments" click on that then go to "choose file" in the upper left corner when the other tab/window opens up. From there, choose "my documents or whatever file/folder you have uploaded your pics to on your computer.
Simply click on the pic you want to share here then click on open or upload or whatever your computer program reads then to the right of "choose file" here on the secondary window click "upload" then wait a couple of seconds to see your pic/scan populate below the area below "choose file" that will read "current attachments" then scroll down on that secondary window and click "close this window" then simply hit "submit reply" either right below here or right below where it reads "manage attachments" and that's it.
You'll see there is also, in the smaller window that pops up after hitting "manage attachments", a place to upload a file using URL's. I have never used that but I assume that would work also if you have your pics or whatever saved that way?

Just a tip, your pics will not load if they are too big, especially pics from a phone but some will downsize automatically by this site. Try and see?
If your pics are too big, Google picture resizer (there are many) and downsize them until they are small enough to be uploaded here.
I hope I explained this clear/easy enough but if not, don't hesitant to ask if needed. (Hopefully I haven't left anything out?)

Good luck.:)

Dan, I was having similar issues and found an app for iPad/iPhone named "Image Size". It's free for basic resizing and it is easy to work with for posting pics on Net54.

Beautiful card! :)

The 56 Mantle is my biggest hobby regret to date. I was offered the same card in a PSA 4 but procrastinated way too long so the seller, who was specifically holding it for me, sold it.
I don't blame him one bit but I was trying to justify the cost, $475 U.S., whether I should spend that on more 52's. :(

rugbymarine 11-17-2021 06:08 PM

I've wanted this one for a while. I actually bought an SGC 3 a week before I won this one. (Shameless plug: That SGC 3 is now up for auction on the net54 front page) Then this one showed up, and the price was right.

Dale, I sat on the sidelines for a ‘56 Mantle for a long time too. It always seems both relatively available and irritatingly overpriced.

The 1971 Topps Greatest Moments #3 Rico Carty is in really sweet shape, way above the grade. I believe the number on the slab indicates it was graded recently, so the (off) centering was probably factored into the grade. 'Normally' it would've gotten either a PSA 7 or 8 OC. There have only been fifty something of these cards graded overall, so I'm psyched to have it.

The 1967 Laughlin World Series #45 Bob Feller (with address on back) is a great card, but it fills me with melancholy since it memorializes a losing effort by the HOF hurler. Oh well.

Trust me, I thought about it! But this way, I still got to keep my Mays & Clemente RCs. I really hated to give those up, y'know?

I am now on the highway to the poorhouse, but, man, did I pick up some good stuff today at a large show in Northern California where masks weren't required. It felt incredible breathing in the freedom after so long (if your idea of 'freedom' is the musty smell of hundreds of overweight guys mixed in with stale mall air), so I went on a spending spree. It seemed most of the graded stuff (usually PSA 3s and 4s) was priced so far into the ionosphere it would give Captain Kirk a nosebleed, so I focused on serious ungraded cards and was able to strike some pretty decent deals. The pair of Benches are particularly beautiful, and the 1971 Reggie, Pete Rose and Thurman Munson are seriously stunning in hand (large scans always make 'em look worse). Holy crap am I psyched!!!

And also grabbed up a trio of sharp-cornered 1966/1967 high numbers...

This just arrived Friday. It is an upgrade for the PSA 8 in my 64 Stand-up set.
