I am starting to add cards i have always wanted as a kid to my collection.
I am buying jordan 101 cards 7.5 and higher grades by bgs. Hit me up if you have any to sell. I will start the thread with one of my jordan star cards. I would love to see your collections. Ben |
Ben:
I had the same idea but last year before the price really spiked on the Star Jordan RC's. I have not been in a good cash position for a while now so couldn't make the pick-ups. As usual, I missed the boat, too late now............ Same thing happened with Giancarlo Stanton RC's a couple of years ago........... The vintage baseball RC's that I was able to buy like Aaron, Mays, Clemente, etc. netted me zero in return. Go figure, right............. |

Definitely scarce, Ben. My biggest fear with them is the fact that the fakes of all Star Co. basketball cards produced were so good that both PSA and SGC have refused to grade these since Day 1. Even though Beckett has taken on the task in recent years, how many fakes do you think have slipped through the cracks and are in holders? My guess is a decent amount and if one of these ends up being a 9.5 Jordan RC and is discovered, the resulting news hitting the market could cause a big downturn in this issue overall IMHO.

Now, however, I believe there is a huge misconception about potential fakes of Star Company cards. Ck out the link. This is from Steve Taft. He is the #1 expert in Star cards. He trained Beckett, GAI, and SCD. He is the Steve Hart (unopened material), Lew Lipset (preWar cards), Paul Muchinsky (pinbacks), Henry Yee (photographs), Grad/Spence/Keurajian (autographs) of Star Co. cards from what I have gathered. http://jordancards.com/blog/the-real...rt-steve-taft/ |

Here are a few of mine. Nice to see some others - the centering is always tough on these issues, but the ones you've all posted above are some of the nicest I've seen.

Nice Jamie,
Here is my #288. This and the #195 are underrated I think as they are also from 1984 with a very low pop and both outside cards in bags. Ben |
Underrated
1 Attachment(s)
This is, IMO, the most underrated card. It is obviously because it is oversized(5x7). However, its weakness also makes it great(more condition sensitive). It is also on the top of the bag and a very low pop. On top of that, it is probably the best image of all the Jordan star cards and thought to be his FIRST by some. It is 100 percent from 1984. I would buy BGS 9s all day long.

I am happy to finally see some discussion on the Star basketball card sets. I have a complete run of all three years and most or all of the subsets still in their sealed bags. I also have some additional cards graded by SCD (many years ago) and have been debating whether or not to open bags and send some of the key cards to Beckett. Any thoughts on a preference of bagged or Beckett graded from the crowd here? Thanks in advance
|
I would go with the Beckett graded option. I think there are too many collectors who will pass on these cards entirely if not graded.

Nice Jordan, Ben.
What are your thoughts on collecting the other major rookies from the Star sets, i.e.- Barkley, Olajuwon, Ewing, Drexler, Wilkins, Thomas and Worthy (probably left someone else out)? |
2 Attachment(s)
For my 2 cents worth I think the other Stars from these sets will eventually rise in price quickly. We have seen over the years a pattern where the "super duper star" rookie card gets all of the attention for a period of time, then the focus moves to the other HOFers in a set, finally followed by the commons (for the set builders). The Star cards are unique in the sense that they have not fully been accepted because of the fear of reprints. When collectors feel confident they are purchasing original cards (Beckett is helping this greatly), I think they will explode in value.

Here is a Jordan 101 bag and barkley xrc bag. I think the mj would grade an 8.
|
Looks like by waiting and feeling out the market on the other Star RC's, I have missed the boat again, just like I did on the Jordan last year. Many of the higher-grade Ewing's, Barkley's, Olajuwon's, Drexler's, etc. have very recently sold on e-bay after being out there for a long time at enticing prices.
Oh well, I'll get in on something at the ground floor one of these days........... |

I guess by the third year of issue, quality control at Star must have gotten a lot better to account for all of the Gem-Mint copies as compared to the second year Jordan card ('84-'85) which is virtually impossible to find Gem-Mint.

That's very cool! Is it authentic? When I first saw this post, I assumed that the cert wouldn't check out, but here it is: http://www.psacard.com/Cert/02002207 Thanks for posting. How many other Star cards do you think are out there in PSA slabs? |

Quite the collection of Star Jordans. |
Here is my crappy iphone photo of my Star Jordan. I keep debating if I want to get it graded and sell it to fund some other parts of my collection. I remember buying the complete set for $60 as a kid. I was smart enough to take care of the star players but can't say the same things about the commons.
http://net54baseball.com/picture.php...ictureid=19151 For autograph collectors the John Stockton is extremely hard to get as John doesn't like to sign cards. I got this signed IP while attending his basketball camp at Gonzaga. http://net54baseball.com/picture.php...ictureid=19152 |

I bought a set of the Star cards as well when they came out; I wish my 42 year-old self had the investing wisdom that my 11 year old self did!
After sitting in my collection raw for 30+ years, this one is at Beckett now, and I should learn its grade in a day or two. Won't be too high because of a couple of corners, but will be happy to have it slabbed, should I ever decide to move it.... |
Ended up with a 7 on the above Jordan
Corners 6.5 Centering 7.5 Edges 8.5 Surface 9.0 About what I expected, so I'm happy to have it slabbed now! |

This thread inspired me to pick one up, my 1st. I agree Ben, this is the best image of all of the Jordan stars. The dimensions of the 5x7 only improves the look.

I picked up a couple classics. Why the magic didn't get a 9 centering making it a 9.5 is beyond me. It is a beautiful card.
Star cards rule. |
1 Attachment(s)
I have always loved this card. They go relatively cheap in high grades which surprises me.
|
1 Attachment(s)
I recently picked up this one, with three 9s it seems unfairly graded to me although I don't know Beckett's system. Also all the ones I have seen are pretty much centered like this.
|
Jordan Olympic
Peter - Nice card. I agree most are centered like that.
With beckett you can only get a .5 grade higher over-all then the corners or centering. So your 7,9,9,9 would in theory net the same grade as a card with all 7.5's. The Jordan below had a 6 for corners making the highest grade possible a 6.5. If you get a 7 for surface or edges and all of the other grades were a 9 you could get an over-all grade of 8. It is why that Beckett prices will vary depending on the subs. A card with 9.5's across the board but an 8.5 for centering will sell better then a card with 3 9's and a 8.5 even though they have the same grade. |

I thought I would share my latest acquisition here, since the Basketball/Hockey New Acquisition thread is really a Hockey thread. ;)
|
That is awesome I wish I had the extra cash to pick up another, that card was like a unicorn when I was a kid. Until one day I saw one and the dealer wanted $900, which to me in the early 90's was like a million. I would go into his shop and look at that thing all the time until he sold it. It was in similar shape as yours, that is one card, that condition aside, just having is great, in my opinion.

Any good place to look to get a good up to date sense of what the Star cards are worth?
|
Star cards have been fairly active on EBay in recent months and you can sort by completed sale for pricing. I follow these closely. If you are looking to buy and new to Star, buy cards in the BGS holder already until you have time to study up. The fakes are easy to tell if you take the time to learn and is worth the effort as the cards are beauties.

Here are two recent Jordan pickups. I have been wanting to get an Entenmann's Jordan for some time. The Star Jordan #117 is a beautiful 2nd year card. The Star Jordan was produced before the 1986 Fleer Jordan.
|
I just picked up my first star jordans, the ten card subset from 86. All are Beckett 8's. I am very impressed by Becketts grading of these (love the sub grading) and will be on the lookout for others.
|
The Jordan 10 card subset is very underappreciated and a great place to start a Star basketball collection. You can still pick up BGS 9 cards from that subset for under $200 which is pretty astounding considering the limited print run on one of Jordan's earliest cards.

Alright, I'm late buying this, but it is still something I can easily flip down the line. It has two 9.5 sub-grades as well, which is cool.
I was actually going to purchase a BGS 8 at first, but when I saw that a 7.5 was going for $2000 - $2500 less, then I was like "screw that, I'll just go with the cheaper option!" Now I think I will have to go after the other big rookies in this set - Barkley will probably be next. Oh, and I find it awesome that this set has the true John Stockton RC as well (he was excluded from the 1986 and 1987 Fleer sets). |

Second year. I hope it's real LOL although I have it on pretty good assurance that it is.

Peter,
Nice card. If you have any concerns, then just email the scans to Steve Taft and ask him for his opinion. He was one of the original distributors of Star basketball cards back in the 1980s. |

Samosa, that is a beautiful #101. Peter, your #117 is indeed legit and a 10 subgrade to boot definitely adds something extra.
