B & L Auction is Up...and I have a question

Hey Scott and Leon- just gave your current auction a once over and it looks like there are a lot of very nice cards. Have a question regarding one lot:

What is the provenance of the Potted Plant scorecard that is part of Henry Chadwick's estate? Is that his handwriting on the scoring grid? That's a very significant scorecard as it is the first game played at Washington Park. Very impressive to say the least...I also saw the ad for Dreyer's Hats at 104 Court Street. That's a couple of blocks from where I live, so I'm going to take a walk over later to see what hats they currently have in stock.

One other note: this is the first time I have seen a slabbed tintype. I find that odd since they don't know the year, the player, or the team. What exactly are they authenticating? But it is a nice image.

Good luck to you both!

Leon 02-15-2010 10:16 AM

Barry

We just thought we would stick a lot of period stuff together and call it something completely different. It seems to work for others so we are giving it a go!! (just kidding)

Seriously, I will have to speak with Scott and the consignor to get the info on that piece (potted plant scorecard). It would never be our intention to mislead someone. As for the slabbed tintype the TPG (SGC) just used common sense based on uniforms and/or equipment, for dating, is what it seems like. The slab offers protection but most collectors of those items know what the are buying. We are very happy with the early baseball lots in this auction. They are neat to look at.

sb1 02-15-2010 11:04 AM

Barry,..

I have an email in to the consignor seeking more information. I know it was purchased as being from the Chadwick estate, which as you know a large amount of material has been dispersed from. At this point we are only representing it as from the estate. The scoring does not match his handwriting exactly, however there appear to be two handwritings on the scorecard, some info may have been added after the fact to document the occasion. We will update with info as we can. We also welcome others input on this piece.

Under the "15 minute open rule" what times do your auctions typically close? Hopefully, it won't kill us easterners too much.

James

Leon 02-15-2010 11:14 AM

Open ended

James- with the success in our last auction of doing an "open-ended" extended time it will probably mean a late finish again. As you well know auction houses work for consignors and I am quite sure a late finish is fine with them. We believe this is the fairest way to run an auction, though it's certainly debatable. If someone wants to bid on any item they will be able too. The last one finished around 3am CST and I would expect this one to be similar...OF course there are no guarantees.
The open ended rule means that you can still bid on a lot, in extended bidding, even if you did not bid on that lot before extended bidding started. Sorry I can't give an exact answer. BTW, a Canadian had the last bid in our last auction so you can blame our friends to the north :) for that late finish. take care

sb1 02-15-2010 11:16 AM

James.......

The last auction ended about 3:00 am. Others have ended closer to 12:30 a.m. I would say somewhere in that ballpark will be expected, but can not guarantee it. This open ended bidding has really been embraced by the bidders. In the event they get pushed past their limit on their main item of interest they can further pursue second or third items down their list.

Orioles1954 02-15-2010 11:41 AM

Ok guys, thanks for the warning :)

barrysloate 02-15-2010 11:44 AM

Thanks Scott, Leon and I were talking about it. I know about the Chadwick material that hit the hobby, and assumed that was its source, but I was hoping you knew a little more about it. Thanks for taking the time.

sb1 02-15-2010 11:47 AM

update

or lack thereof, I talked to the consignor who purchased it from a well known dealer as being from the Chadwick estate. The opinion is that Chadwick did not score it, but may have been the one that added the notations. Again, this is our rendering of the facts, we welcome input.

barrysloate 02-15-2010 12:59 PM

Even if Chadwick didn't score the game, if he added the notations, and that is his handwriting, then that is an extremely significant scorecard. If you can verify that information, you have a real winner- the first game played at historic Washington Park, annotated by Henry Chadwick- boy, you need to play that up.
You know the rule of auctions- hype, hype, hype!;)

Leon 02-15-2010 01:04 PM

no doubt

Barry- No doubt if we can confirm the handwriting we will. If we can't confirm it I doubt we will embellish the way some others do. It's not our style.

barrysloate 02-15-2010 01:09 PM

Leon- never, ever let facts get in the way of a good story!:p

sb1 02-15-2010 01:22 PM

Handwriting

Barry,
I have reviewed many online times written by Chadwick and his writing is inconsistent. Further this scorcard appears to be a mix of printed and cursive writing makes it hard to confirm it's his, some of the letter are spot on, others are different. At this point we can only assert the known, that it is from the historically important first Brooklyn Professional game played at Washington Park and that it did come from the Chadwick Estate. I am in hopes that a more knowledgable than I expert will provide more evidence.

Scott

barrysloate 02-15-2010 01:30 PM

Scott- your best bet would be an autograph guy. It's possible the person who scored the game posted some notes, and then Henry Chadwick added some of his own, thus accounting for the different penmanship.

But as you said, the historic importance of the first game at Washington Park is testament enough.

Very nice auction. Glad to see my tintype made it in. Lots of cool stuff.

E122 American Caramel Cobb is actually an E220 National Caramel?

Scott, Leon:

Not that you asked for it, but one piece of advice: At the end of the auction, don't offer free shipping.

sb1 02-15-2010 03:40 PM

Oops!

Why yes it is, and a much tougher card as well.

Thanks for catching this. Corrected now.

Scott

sb1 02-15-2010 03:41 PM

Shipping won't be free.....

But it will be reasonable!

JP 02-15-2010 06:41 PM

Oh goodness....I just shorted out my computer drooling over a couple cards I really need that are featured in your auction. I decliare bidder war!!!!

Thanks so much, WarhoundR69!!

I went ahead and merged this new thread with the one already going as I don't want to be a "ball hog". I also toned down my sales pitch :)

Henry Chadwick Scorecard in B+L

Was anyone on the board able to identify if the handwriting on the scorecard was Henry Chadwick's?

Leon 03-05-2010 07:13 PM

don't think so

I don't think the handwriting was ever confirmed as Chadwick's.

sb1 03-05-2010 07:21 PM

nothing definite

While we were not able to conclusively state that the card was scored by Chadwick, there was some speculation that some of the notes were added later, perhaps by him. Again this is conjecture, I doubt that anyone that knows for certain will respond until after the auction ends, as they would not want to tip their hand.

Anyone else having trouble getting on the site?

Mikehealer 03-05-2010 08:39 PM

I just tried and wasn't able to log on either.

Leon 03-05-2010 08:57 PM

up?

It seems to be up to me. Please post again here if it's not up for anyone and we will look into it.

glynparson 03-05-2010 09:03 PM

I got in just fine

Works for me too.

Mikehealer 03-05-2010 09:07 PM

No problems now.

nolemmings 03-06-2010 06:57 PM

The site just timed out on me, and has been moving snail slow the last 15 minutes

bigfish 03-06-2010 07:01 PM

same issue

slow...can't bid

3-2-count 03-06-2010 07:01 PM

Timing out on me to. Haven't been able to access for the last 15 mins.

Buythatcard 03-06-2010 07:01 PM

The site is very sluggish. It has been taking me about 5 minutes to place a bid. Some bids have not gone in because the page came back blank.

Kawika 03-06-2010 07:02 PM

Got a lot of bids I want to beef up. Can't even log in.

Mikehealer 03-06-2010 07:04 PM

Same problem here. I can't get past the Home page.

White Borders 03-06-2010 07:05 PM

To cut costs, they're using Barry's Commodore 64 as the server! :p

HRBAKER 03-06-2010 07:07 PM

Same for me, I'll keep trying.

Steve D 03-06-2010 07:09 PM

You can add me to the list of so-far-unsuccessful loggers-on :(

appears down?

Michael Peich 03-06-2010 07:11 PM

Impossible to bid, even though I keep getting emails that I have been out-bid.

And people complain about the Hunt website?

C'mon, stop using Barry's Commodore and get a real server! I'll just claim eminent domain on all my bids and take the lowest one.

buymycards 03-06-2010 07:12 PM

8:00

Worked fine until 8:00 CST when the 15 minute rule began. Now Google doesn't recognize the link, and when it does, it kicks me out right away.

Rhett,

I believe that they are using the Open 15-minute rule, so you can bid on any item at any time, even if you haven't bid on something before 9.

asoriano 03-06-2010 07:15 PM

I keep getting a message saying "the maximum amount of time for a script to execute was exceeded".

jtschantz 03-06-2010 07:20 PM

Ditto, can't get into the site

Bridwell 03-06-2010 07:21 PM

Auction

Has anyone been able to get in a bid in the last 15 minutes? If not, the entire auction is over! That's based on the written auction rules. Ouch!

glynparson 03-06-2010 07:22 PM

got on page 1

but couldn't get past lot 25. now can't get on it at all. I'm sure they are working on it. Good luck guys. Hope you get it fixed soon.

Home Page

I can get into the home page now but nowhere else

Leon 03-06-2010 07:24 PM

the site is hanging up....

It looks as though the site is having a hiccup. There is a call into our hosting company. I will continue to call them every minute or two. We might have to make the extended bidding start a bit later or, at the very worst, have another auction close tomorrow night. Scott is out of pocket for another few minutes but I wanted to post as quick as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and are working on it.

edited to add that I just now spoke to our hosting company (8:26pm CST) and they are working on it now. We will handle this the best way we can keeping our consignors and bidders in mind.

Steve D 03-06-2010 07:25 PM

Now I can't even reach their website. I just get redirected to ask.com.

Steve

botn 03-06-2010 07:25 PM

Breathe people...

I would not worry about. I am sure the issue will be fixed and there will be more than enough time for everybody to place bids. Can only imagine how many people sent poor Leon and Scott emails...

HRBAKER 03-06-2010 07:26 PM

Good luck with the fix. Hopefully it's a minor issue. Keep us posted.
I never stopped breathing or sent any e-mails.

You are right Greg :)

In the overall scheme, this is but a "flesh wound".

But come on now, baseball cards is serious stuff for some of us ;)

barrysloate 03-06-2010 07:32 PM

You can click the link at the top of this page and get to the B & L home page easy enough...but when you click the "auction" icon nothing happens.

to reiterate

We are working on it folks. Hang in there. We will make it right for everyone and apologize very much.

That's a great side effect of the way you guys have the auction set to end - none of us expected the auction to end at 9:45 PM EST so the site being down a bit right now doesn't really matter.

Kawika 03-06-2010 07:48 PM

Getting there but still funky. Just put in a bid and was told simultaneously that I am current high bidder and that my bid was too low and could not be accepted.
