T3 Turkey Red Gallery

1 Attachment(s)
There's a thread on the postwar board that has been going on since January where cards from the 1952 Topps set are being posted one a day in numerical order. I thought it would be fun to do the same thing with the beautiful T3 Turkey Red set starting today with Mordecai Brown, tomorrow will be Bill Bergen, etc.

Here is my Mordecai Brown. Let's see some other Browns that people have.

FYI, I'm actively working on the set and my want list is in my sig. Thanks!

Hi

Just curious I have heard about but never seen any Turkey red proof cards.

Does anyone on the forum have any? If so could you share some photos of them

Jeff, you can see a few at Craig’s T3 site here. Definitely worth checking out. http://www.t3turkeyred.com/Proofs.html

I had the Boss Schmidt Detroit proof for Many years, I traded it about 5 years ago to another collector for a Tomlinson Cabinet of Hanlon Detroit. We were both happy. He was collecting the proofs.

I need Criger, Kling, and Doolin. The set is a pretty consistent Ex/vg-ex. Luckily I bought most of the key cards years ago (many ungraded but in that consistent condition.) bought the Cobb from Dan McKee at willow Grove in the 90’s. I have seen the cards i need but often lower grades or if in top condition they have been just too expensive (chased by registry guys).

If anyone has them in those grades, looking to buy! :-)

Every time someone points out what a terrible hitter Bergen was, I have to counter that he was probably the best defensive catcher of the deadball era.

Craig, I thought you used to have them all and were trying to again so I'm interested as well to see how close you are. I think I have 1 no offer back.

Here's Tommy Leach for today.

Jay Wolt 10-21-2021 06:51 AM

Most of my "No offer" backs are the T9 boxers as they seem easier to find.
REA just auctioned off a nice Ty Cobb "no offer" a month or 2 ago

Here's a Tommy Leach I once had

I know that the no offer backs are very tough to find, but I was wondering about the difference between the checklist backs that are 1-75 and 1-76. When I was collecting the set, I didn't pay much attention to the backs, but I counted my set, and I only have 15 that are the 1-76 checklist so I guess those are less common than the 1-75 checklist but not as rare as the no offer backs. Does anyone know if that is correct?

chadeast 10-21-2021 09:47 AM

Tommy Leach hit 49 career inside-the-park home runs, second only to Sam Crawford all time. He also has the first modern World Series hit to his credit, a 2-out triple off of Cy Young in the top of the first inning in Game 1 of the 1903 series.

I was wondering why so many of the pictures being shown were so small. I am uploading pictures that have transferred from my phone to my PC where I have usually cropped them and then resaved before uploading. I'm not sure why they show up as large as they do, but they just do.

HOF catcher Bresnahan made his major league debut at 18 yrs old in 1897, as a pitcher for the soon to be defunct Washington Senators of the National League. He pitched a six hit shutout.

And thanks again for the card, Craig. :)

This is a great and enjoyable thread and with so many on the list of T3's it will go on for a while and be very interactive.

I might have to go out and find me some T3's so I can join in.

The one that started it all for me..

chadeast 10-23-2021 10:35 AM

Arguably the premier power hitter of the deadball era. Bill James estimated that Sam Crawford would have hit 494 career home runs if he had begun playing in 1919, the lively ball era, instead of 1899. Ty Cobb said that Sam Crawford would have hit 40 homers a year if he played in Ruth's era.

Chase

Need it!

chadeast 10-24-2021 11:04 AM

Chase signed with the Buffalo franchise of the newly formed Federal League in 1914. Charlie Comiskey was incensed that the upstart league would steal one of his players, and arrived at Chase's first game in Buffalo, lawyers in tow, with papers to serve to Chase barring him from participating in the game. Chase arrived at the game dressed as a woman, in "full feminine costume", in an attempt to elude Comiskey, and walked to an empty toolshed down the right field line! Chase changed into his uniform and made his way to the infield from the toolshed as the game began. Buffalo came to the plate in the top half of the first inning, even though they were the home team, in order to get Chase at least one appearance! Chase struck out, and was then removed from the game as Comsikey had obtained an injunction barring Chase from playing anywhere in the state of New York.

Camnitz was the 1st Turkey Red I ever owned.
When PSA started to grade these, I sent in this Camnitz, it was the only Camnitz on their pop report & they had about 30 total cards graded.

Thanks for sharing a little about your T3 journey. We'll get to my first T3 in a little over two weeks from now. It was bought in 2011 on Ebay, coincidentally from a current net54 member. I owned that one Turkey Red for over 9 years before I bought my second T3 early in 2021.

Jay Wolt 10-25-2021 11:37 AM

Yep. #2 through #26 all came at once. In fact, over 60 of those came in ungraded lots. That's about the only way to make it happen that quickly, unless you have unlimited cash I suppose. I've also sold or traded another 18 or so duplicates, and I have five or six more to sell that I haven't gotten around to posting on the BST yet. It's been quite the ride, but extremely enjoyable. It has been quiet lately, but I'll be posting my newest addition today in the October pickup thread. It's a big pickup for me as I've seen just one for sale during the last six months (Memory Lane), and like every T3 in that auction it was too expensive for me.

I knew Cobbs had gone up lately, but I didn't realize how much. There's a PSA 2.5 for sale by tonyetrade.com for $21,725. I bought quite a few T3s from him for my set, and the prices he has them for now all seem a lot higher than what I was paying last year.

That's because I bought all of the sub-$300 cards he had ;) Not really, but I did buy around 10 from Tony. That Cobb price is a stretch for sure, but I don't blame him for listing it there given the current market. Might as well give the Dean's Cards business model a shot. If he does sell it for that, my future prospects for finishing the set will be bleak.
