Tinker - Evers - Chance

I've always thought it would be fun to own at least one card of each of these players, and be able to display them together. I own very few pre-war cards and am just learning about what's out there. Thought this would be a nice way to learn more and start to wander down the rabbit-hole of early 20th century collecting.

Could anyone suggest "affordable' options, as well as suggestions about whether it would be best to find cards from the same set or simply ones that complement the others (in terms of making a nice display)? Not concerned about condition, but would like the issues to have some eye appeal. I recognize affordable means different things to different people, but I guess what I mean is I am not looking for the best of the best, the most scarce, etc.

Thanks!

budget

The prices could be all over the board. If you let us know what your approximate budget is, it will help. So, maybe $25, $50, $100 etc (for all 3)....There are lots of options in most price ranges. I think you could get nice, but lower grade T's or E's, in the $100-$200 range for all 3.... regards

Bicem 07-18-2010 10:11 AM

here you go, all 3 on one card...

Thanks. Ideally, maybe $75 each, but I could go to about $150 per player. Is there a 'price point' where there is a big difference in what you can expect to get?

You could get their T 206's easily for $150 each or less in VG or below

FrankWakefield 07-18-2010 11:57 AM

MAB,

I had those same thoughts, still have 'em. From looking at the options, I think the gold border T205's present the trio best. I like the white border T206 cards more than I do the gold or brown borders, but the 3 Cub infielders together look at their best, I think, in T205s.

I don't have the 3, I think I have one of 'em. Someone here surely can post the 3 beside one another in T205s.

Here are 2 of them. I do not have Tinkers T205 yet

The 100th anniversary of the poem is coming up in a few weeks.

I have them in the T206 ...and bought Harry Steinfeldt for good measure!

Of course, Chance was the only one of the three that went back as early as 1898. Here he is (player #12) ..................

mab 07-18-2010 05:04 PM

Thanks for the great ideas and the scans! Not sure which I like best; the T205s look great, but I sort of like the 'action' shots with the color backgrounds of the T206s or even the American Caramels, too. Exactly how I get sucked in - I like lots of things, so I start collecting them all....

I am going to the National in a few weeks; seems like this is a good project to add to my shopping list!

What are thoughts about raw versus graded on vintage cards? How do you make sure you aren't buying forgeries or trimmed cards?

Thanks again!

I've been trying to find the Chance for 15 years . . . I'll keep trying, though. I know they exist. I have the T202, a good choice. I personally think the T205 trio is a great option.

PC

There are several different period PCs that picture the trio as well.

If you get the trio, don't forget to add ol' 3 Finger Brown.

Can't have a prewar Cubs collection without him.

The T205 Trio is a nice choice

I do like how this set displays, and if I had the coin, I would surely assemble the whole set...here are my cards of the trio. Reminds me that I need to upgrade the Evers and Chance someday!

Matt 07-21-2010 12:06 PM

Bruce - those are spectacular!

B O'Brien 07-21-2010 01:02 PM

I always love a chance to show the trio. I would recommend a more cost effective method than dipping into front back combos. I do love how the three sit side by side in my backs group that I have in ABC ordering!

Here's my T216 Trio

Tinker to Evers to Chance. But this trio is very difficult to complete and it can't be accomplished for $150 a card:

Thanks to everyone for the great posts and scans! Lots of ideas heading into the National....

T205 array already posted but these near-beaters in a dreaded screwdown holder serve as a funky paperweight.

I've post these before

Less than $200 for the entire infield. Keep in mind most were aquired when prices were at their peak a few years ago.

This may be a stupid question, but what is the downside of a screwdown?

Some people's opinion is that they tend to crush the corners of the card inside.

My feeling is that most cards (worth putting in one) has been in one at some point.
