#235 and #236-I got a great deal on a Posey signed Diploma, but the diploma itself is gigantic (at least 16*20) and a rare full name Maranville from Mr. Stinson.

Check out this early 3 x 5 autograph collecting quirk

9 Attachment(s)
You've gotta love this vintage collector's innovative way of collecting signed 3 x 5's!

In 1949 he sent GPC's to towns in the US that had the first and last names of players he was going to have sign a 3 x 5 and got them postmarked. Once he received them back he individually affixed the corresponding postmarks to a 3 x 5 and then subsequently sent them to the player to be signed.
A huge time commitment and a hobby quirk that I really love. I've seen at least one other collector from the late 1960's that did something similar, but this was 1949.
Pretty cool!
The seller had many signed 3 x 5's from this collection, but I went after all of the no-hit pitchers since that's what I collect. I managed to win all nine. :)

Check them out...

Scott, that's really cool! Great stuff.

Today I picked up a 1940 "Who's Who in Baseball" from the estate sale for the late Cub broadcaster Jack Brickhouse. When I picked up the copy amongst a stack of others and paged through it, I noticed the opening page was signed in pencil by a number of players including Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Dom Dimaggio, Joe Cronin, Ted Lyons(?) and Luke Appling who signed over his stats on the following page. It's in great condition considering it's 75 years old. The sellers apparently did not know of the signatures. Most signed baseball memorabilia was in locked cases. I had two Who's Who in hand and asked the price, they knocked the price down for the two to $15.00.

Sorry for the lack of a scan.

Finally found a Gene Gieselmann on a Cardinals baseball, which completes my goal of every Cardinal involved with an All Star game (player, coach, manager, trainer).

Glad to add a Koufax auto finally, even if it's a low end one.

That Lennon is AMAZING, Michael!

This just arrived today, a music one as well. I've wanted one of these my entire life, as I've been a fan since I was 4. Elvis, signed in 1956.

Amazing Lennon and Elvis. Great stuff guys.

Picked up a John Brush signature, did extensive research to ensure this was signed prior to August Herrmann takeover of the Reds. I am aware of the vast theft that occurred and downloaded the complete catalog to ensure that nothing from the archive predates Herrmann's takeover of the Reds prior to 20th Century, besides Corporate Minutes and Stock.

Galloping Ghost

1 Attachment(s)
I was happy to receive this in the mail today. My Pops went to Illinois and would always talk about Red Grange, the Galloping Ghost. I am trying to research the photographer (H.F. Duncan), but from what I can gather, he was a local photographer that would take photos for The University of Illinois' yearbook. A very similar, but not exact match to this photo is found in the 1925 yearbook, so I would think this 5x7 image dates to around 1924. Unsure if it's an original type 1, but the signature is vintage fountain pen:)

I saw that Grange, but I mainly collect only Minnesota related football. That is one incredible photo. Nice pick up

Thanks Jason, I appreciate it! I take it then that you are a big Nagurski guy?

Rocket Roger Clemens signed 20 strikeout game tickets

2 Attachment(s)
I recently picked up a signed full ticket to Rocket Roger Clemens' 1st 20 strikeout game on April 29, 1986. In this game Clemens became the first player to fan 20 in a 9 inning game surpassing Nolan Ryan's 19 K AL record set in 1974. In 1996, 10 years later, Clemens duplicated the feat becoming the only pitcher to strike out 20 twice in a ML career. Only Tom Cheney (21 K's in 15 innings), Kerry Wood and HOF Randy Johnson have also struck out 20 or more in a ML game.

This ticket matches up well with the signed full ticket that I own from Roger's 2nd 20 K game in 1996 @ DET.

scmavl 12-23-2015 12:40 PM

Very cool ticket set, Scott!

Joe D Seals signature

1 Attachment(s)
Don't have this one in hand yet... But figured I'd get it in the 2015 pickup log!

There is something about early player signatures that grabs me... I thought this one was particularly cool as it was signed by Joe during his 61 game hit streak, and well before he reached super stardom!

Thanks for parting with it Tom! I'm happy to add it to my collection

tazdmb 12-28-2015 06:58 AM

For from rare, but picked it up as I had never seen a full name Lucius B. "Luke" Appling signature before.
