Main collecting focus at this time

At this moment in time...what is your main focus of collecting:

a)set/master set completion
b)specific player acquisition
c)back run
d)autograph related
e)other

markf31 01-13-2019 08:06 AM

I voted Other as I am all over the place at the moment, I have tried in the past to focus on one or two subjects or topics but I always wonder astray. I've just accepted that Im a wonderer now.

But my current fascinations are:
E90-2
T210s
World Wide Gum Master
Zeenuts
Exhibits 1921-1928
E-card HOFers

Subject to change by the time I finish composing this post...

Leon 01-13-2019 08:08 AM

Other. No real focus. I just get what cards I like. (and the T205 set too)

swarmee 01-13-2019 08:27 AM

Mostly player set collecting, but also improving my PSA T51 set when I see higher grade cards come up.

x2drich2000 01-13-2019 08:30 AM

I voted other just because its so infrequent that I am able to pick up a card I need for one of my main sets (E92 Nadja and red crofts). Most of what I pick up now is either just random cards I like or cards I plan to flip.

insidethewrapper 01-13-2019 08:33 AM

Yea, I'm focused from 19th Century to the 2019 Topps Set when it comes out in a few weeks.

clydepepper 01-13-2019 08:40 AM

Just as several members have already admitted, I am currently blurry.

?

Jason 01-13-2019 08:42 AM

I have some of all four going on right now. I chose set completion as that is my main focus at the moment.

ullmandds 01-13-2019 08:44 AM

I suppose I did not phrase my question specifically enough what I really meant was which project that you are working on are you most passionate about hoping to add to or complete!!

Rhotchkiss 01-13-2019 08:49 AM

Pete, that changes my answer. I am focusing currently on both player acquisitions and back runs, the latter of which is mostly composed of poses of players I am collecting (the former) However, I am more passionate about the back than the player part (for example, I would rather have an e105 Wagner throwing over some other similarly-valued Wagner, because I need the back), but I voted for player acquisition bc a nice Cobb or Jackson comes up far more often than a t206 Evers yellow sky Drum.

commishbob 01-13-2019 08:55 AM

Finishing 1961T, a lesser emphasis on a couple of others...75 & 76

pawpawdiv9 01-13-2019 09:16 AM

Other- nothing particular.
More of a High-End/white-whale/centerpiece maybe prewar.
or could be just a upgrade of a card.

PowderedH2O 01-13-2019 11:38 AM

In the process of selling many sets and partial sets. Enjoy bouncing around too much. So, no focus at all.

Orioles1954 01-13-2019 11:47 AM

Other: I no longer collect. I wonder how many are like me who enjoy reading what's going on in the hobby but no longer buys cards for a personal collection.

mrvster 01-13-2019 11:55 AM

Pete!

other for me.....

Rare Backs (t206)......Cobbs (t206).......always scraps..........Mantle:)

rats60 01-13-2019 01:26 PM

I put b, but e might be more applicable. I am only collecting specific players, but also only looking for specific cards, not just any card of those players. I have a very specific want list that I am working on.

Spike 01-13-2019 01:29 PM

Inquiring minds want to know, WWG Master for all their sets? 1933-34 baseball specifically?

As a set collector that is still my primary focus. I have way too many sets I’m looking to complete.

Although I still pick up singles if they are a good price on something I feel passionate on.

pitchernut 01-13-2019 04:23 PM

Specific player in a non same player way:o RC's for no-no pitchers from 1900 on, with the accompanying next day newspaper article.

Joe_G. 01-13-2019 06:02 PM

Other . . .

Primarily a team collector (quite a few forum members collect this way).

My one rule breaker is N333 Newsboys in which I'm interested in any/all teams.

Throttlesteer 01-13-2019 06:42 PM

Other - Mid-grade T206s other than the portraits that people keep paying WAY too much for. $8300 for a PSA 4 Young?????? Someone is smoking something

Touch'EmAll 01-13-2019 07:06 PM

My collecting focus is outbid notices.

mrreality68 01-13-2019 07:40 PM

Staying focused

The hardest part is definitely staying focused
I am looking to upgrade on Rookie Joe Jackson or Rare Joe Jackson’s and Boston Redsox Babe Ruth
But while I wait for the right card and deal/price other interesting cards catch my eye and I jump in and get them of course what I really want comes up and then the resources are not available

Finally regroup and sent others to auction to get the resources so I am back on the hunt(hopefully)

I have been all over the place over the last few years but in the last year I have settled down to focus on two specific set building areas.

I am building the sets I built as a kid, sets that helped stoke my love for this hobby. The 1973-77 Topps baseball sets have always been my primary interest and I finally decided to plug away and work on these sets when great lots of cards are found or singles can be had at a reasonable price.

I have always loved vintage cards and the 1956 and 57 Topps baseball sets always sparked my interest. I fell into some decent commons and stars for the '56 set that gave me a push to go that way and so I intend to build this set with cards that have great eye appeal.

Steve D 01-13-2019 09:14 PM

Right now, I'm concentrating on finishing my T205 set, and collecting San Diego Padres game-used bats, with an emphasis on the 1984 and 1998 teams, along with Padres in the Hall of Fame.

runred41 01-13-2019 10:17 PM

I voted specific player collecting...I collect Jim Thorpe and pursue anything concerning him...photos, cards, programs, memorabilia, advertising etc...

bounce 01-14-2019 05:30 PM

little bit of everything

some specific pre-war guys i'm looking for, but also 50s sets, couple vintage player collections, autographs always, some modern baseball and football players/sets - even picked up a couple Type 1 photos in the last few months

glad i do a little of everything, as it allows me to move around when certain things get hot or not fun anymore

Vintagecatcher 01-15-2019 06:45 AM

Expecting quiet year

I'm expecting a quiet year.

Still need only a few cards to complete runs of catchers in those sets.

I'd like to pick up more T210s but they are hard to find lately.

Perhaps I'll pick up a few T204 catchers.

Patrick

TistaT202 01-15-2019 10:15 AM

Other

working on a NY American Tobacco card set

some of these cards are impossible to find, which I am ok with. The chase is 75% of the fun for me, although it is hard to stay disciplined when there s a lull between finds.

Robert (vintagebaseballcardguy) is going to read this and be disappointed in me! :p

No focus really with 50's - 70's HOFers, mostly mid-grade PSA. I buy what tickles my fancy, sometimes selling later to finance something new that I've decided I want more. I tried late in 2018 to get into pre-war Cubs and still have a few, but have already sold off some of those that I bought rashly in efforts to finance new post-war Topps cards of the larger names. Not sure why I try to fight it; it's clear that's where my heart is.

And let me just say if you need to move a card quickly for cash, boy there really is no name quite like Mickey Mantle...;)

Michael B 01-15-2019 11:04 AM

I am definitely other. I am sort of like the odd uncle in the closet. I mainly collect what no one else collects, even among Olympic collectors. I collect original photos of American Olympians. This includes all types - press, studio, personal - high school portraits and even baby photos. It is not just photos, but also RPPC's, negatives, glass plate negatives, magic lantern slides and transparencies (slides). I also collect items related to Olympic photographers - vests, credentials, photographers tickets, patches. I have about a dozen vests and I acquired many of Neil Leifer's Olympic tickets. I am not a big ticket collector, but I will pick up ones that I find interesting - 1960 Ice hockey gold medal game (the original miracle on ice), 1984 Women's marathon (oddball ticket as it is a gold medal event that had a start time at 8:30 in the morning), 1972 Israeli memorial ticket (most people do not realize what this one is).

SMPEP 01-15-2019 11:38 AM

Easy - completion of my 1923 W572 set. 4 cards away! (Maybe 3 if Barbare doesn't really exist).

Cheers,
Patrick

John, I could never be disappointed in you because I am the most rudderless collector I know! :p;) I had purchased a few prewar cards at the same time you did and, like you, have sold them. I am back in 1950s baseball and 1960s football. This is my focus until my focus gets blurry again...

darwinbulldog 01-15-2019 02:33 PM

Other for me. I dabble in sets, but mainly I go for type cards.

alywa 01-15-2019 03:13 PM

Currently working on the T206 HOFers (minus Wagner and Plank) in grade 2-4... at around 60/74. Should be doable this year, though the Green Cobb prices are discouraging.

Danny Smith 01-17-2019 07:03 PM

Just the e105 Mello Mint set.

pgconboy 01-17-2019 10:03 PM

I've got 2 cards left for an e95 set (Cobb and Cicotte).
Then I am at a bit of a loss on what to do next. May post a new thread in the future asking for suggestions Tentatively thinking E94 or very slowly grab some expensive singles I have my eyes on (1914ish Grover, 1932 Lefty Grove, maybe a t206 Walter Johnson)
