Mlb question

Has a mlb team gone an entire season without losing a series?

Not 100% sure but I seem to remember that the 1986 Mets did this as they marched through their division that year. I watched or listened to practically every game that year and I seem to remember that either they didn’t loose a series or maybe it was they weren’t shut out. Not sure though I’ll have to check it out once I get a chance.

So I looked it up and was wrong on both accounts. The Astros beat them 3 games to 1 in one series and shut them out 3 to 0 in a game earlier in the year. I guess it was just my 14 year old super fan mind remembering what I thought was the perfect team. Sorry.

I don't think so, Pete. I looked at some of the teams with the best single season win totals-the 1906 Cubs (116-36), the 2001 Mariners (116-46), the 1998 Yankees (114-48), the 1954 Cleveland Indians (111-43), and the 1927 Yankees (110-44). None of them made it more than a month or so without losing a series. The '98 Yankees, in fact, started off 1-4, including losing both games of a two game set with the Angels, before going on a 22-2 run.

The Corollary Question

Has a team ever lost or tied every series in a season?

Without checking the 72 Phillies come to mind. Carlton won half their games and probably didn't win twice in a series. I'll let 'stache do the research.

No--although I cant say for sure I would bet heavily against it. The Diamondbacks opened this season by winning 9 straight series, tying the A.L record (the 1907 Cubs opened with 11 in 1907). While your question implies that a team can split a series to keep their streak alive, I have to believe that no team has come close to "not losing" any of the 40-50 or so series played each year.
