Your favorite "action shot" card that you own

Please excuse if this topic has came up before, just thought it would be a fun one. Here's one of my fav's of an under rated player from my youth.

Harliduck 01-31-2013 10:21 AM

I know this one has been brought up several times...but considering I FINALLY picked it up last week for my set I can now enjoy the card...

Staying with the 71 theme, this is a pretty bad mother of a card too...one of my favorites as a kid...

This is a really cool Mantle shot that I love...

Another favorite from my youth...did Pete ever have a helmet on when he was running??

http://i.ebayimg.com/t/1977-Topps-27...N+Q~~60_12.JPG

One more...probably my favorite card when I was 9...one of the few Tito cards you can't read his name spelled out across his hat!

Harliduck 01-31-2013 10:34 AM

Topps flat out nailed this card...

Look at Gibsons face in this shot!! No wonder he was feared...

Another favorite from my youth...

Safe or Out???

I used to LOVE action cards when I was a kid...last one I promise!!

Mantle Shot ?

John---I like that card and I have it in my set. I grew up in St Louis and had the good fortune of attending game one at age 14. Game 3 was in NY and the Cardinal pitcher off whom Mantle homered was Barney Schultz. I have always felt that the picture on that card in fact shows Mantle swinging and missing a Gibson fast ball.

Harliduck 01-31-2013 11:56 AM

Al...first off...what a series and game to go to...WOW.

I just read the "Last Boy" Mantle book and she did a great job describing that HR. Definitely a high light of the book. And I think you are 100% right...here is a photo this card obviously comes from and this is Gibson blowing one past him..TOO FUNNY. Thanks for that! Great observation...

I've always loved this one because of the sheer irony of there being absolutely no action going on in an "in action" card

As a Cardinal fan I've always liked these 2

cubsfan-budman 02-01-2013 11:04 AM

Saw this card very soon after I got interested in vintage and HAD to have it. So cool:

1976 Brock

The 76 Brock is another one I love... the artist retouching on his right stirrup really makes this card... the scarlet color painted on adds a cool glow to his legs!

As an 11-year-old, baseball-crazed NYY fan, the most important moment of my childhood to that time:

The 73 set has lots of cool action shots

I like the cars in the background of Luis Alvarodo, and the look in Beckert's face, like he did not like the home plate ump call.

And a couple more 73's. Quiz time, which one is Joe Rudi????? And, shouldn't Bobby Bonds card actually be Willie Stargell???

Harliduck 02-01-2013 04:54 PM

Great 73 cards..I love that set! The Steve Garvey falls into the theme of whose card is it as well, not much action, and not much Garvey...

ALR-bishop 02-01-2013 09:12 PM

action

Great cards all

Well, I don't have any vintage cards that could be categorized as "action shots", so I'll share one of my favorites. I'll own it someday (but surely not a PSA 9).

The 1953 Bowman Pee Wee Reese is the first thing I thought of.

It's a thing of beauty!

Harliduck 02-02-2013 04:37 PM

Just wow! I would like to have a print of that Reese shot for the wall...incredible! I have never seen that card before..

Paul S 02-02-2013 10:53 PM

Reese

There is an informative thread from not long ago re the 52 Reese.

As would I, John.

Like I keep saying, modern day baseball cards have nothing on the vintage cards. Just an amazing shot.

Thank you, Paul. Reading it now.

Just found out that was a b&w shot, hand colored for the '53 Bowman set.

Wow. Just wow.

Looks like he's thinking "Do they teach these guys the strike zone at all?"

scmavl 02-15-2013 01:51 PM

This card was kind of groundbreaking for its time. I was never really a Ryan collector, but this one was always cool.

He's thinking "that's ok, pitcher. Next time you hit the ball to right field, and try to stretch a single to a double, I'm going to throw you out".
