Reds compact

1 Attachment(s)
My uncle got this for his sister in 1935 while a member of the Reds. A women's compact. Reds logo in bottom right is worn--almost no color left. Not sure how well it will present here but an odd and interesting piece

Emmett Nelson

Very nice. Looks like it's sitting atop Emmett Nelson's 1936 Reds jacket.

There is another notation on the ball that is mostly non-decipherable (Begins "The first...") and the score "Cincie 10 - Chicago 1", along withe the date "April 14, 1914", which likely makes this a game ball from opening day at Redland Field and Buck Herzog's first game as manager.

Vander Meer 2nd No Hitter Stub

1 Attachment(s)
Thought I would place this here as opposed to the June pickups. This 2nd no hitter/first Ebbets Field night game stub has been on my most wanted list for longer than I care to remember. What has always amazed me about these is that even though almost 39,000 fans were in the stands in Brooklyn that night, just how few of these have seemed to have survived.

Hi Dave,

Following the 1890 season, both the National League and the Players’ League were struggling financially. In an effort to strengthen the League for a then anticipated 1891 season, Players’ League executives decided to eliminate the Buffalo team, the weak sister of the League, and replace it with a stronger franchise. With this in mind, on October 4, 1890 a group of Players’ League representatives purchased the Cincinnati National League franchise to replace Buffalo. The document below is the original sale document for this transaction. However, over the next several months the Players’ League collapsed as many of its’ financial backers became convinced that fighting the National League for another season was not worth it. With the collapse of the Players’ League Cincinnati found its’ way back into the National League for the 1891 and all subsequent seasons.

A few snapshots

1973 Reds outside the Astrodome. Top four are easy. Name the player in the bottom pic.

1990 Reds clinch the division. They got rained out, but clinched due to the 2nd place team losing out west. We hung out and watched the Reds players sliding on the tarp to celebrate. It was a beautiful day before the game - we stopped and chowed down on Metwursts before-hand. But no baseball.

I vividly remember that day in 1990... It was like a Slip & Slide, with grown men acting like kids. Little did we know they would go on to sweep the Mighty Athletics in the World Series. That (28 years ago) was literally the last time I was ecstatic about baseball. It's been a long drought...

I'll give this a shot. How about...

All I remember is eating three Metwursts before the game and watching the sliding around. I can't remember if they got any baseball in, but it was a great day.

Collage of cut prints by Charles Conlon for use in Spalding’s Guide, 1914.

When readied for reproduction in ink, Conlon's photographs were frequently silhouetted or cut with a pen-knife.

Pictured are Cincinnati Reds players Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown, Rube Benton, Gene Packard, Johnny Kling, George Howard "Chief" Johnson and George Suggs.

Johnny Vander Meer display from the 2008 50th Anniversary of the Reds HOF

1 Attachment(s)
I recently picked up this Vandy display that was used by the Reds HOF in 2008 during the celebration of the HOF's 50th Anniversary. Johnny Vander Meer was one of the original inductees into the Reds HOF in 1958.

The Reds sold several items from this exhibit in the Everything But The House auction in Cincinnati last week.
The Vander Meer display says:

Johnny Vander Meer Pitcher 1937-1949 and has this quote from Vander Meer:
"Somebody might tie it, but I don't think it will ever be broken" - Vander Meer on his record back-to-back no-hitters in 1938.

The display dimensions are 9" x 12" by 1/4"

Many thanks to net54 good guy Chris Gamble (Bumpus Jones) for telling me about this auction. :);)

A vintage Tony Perez signed scorecard

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...zautograph.jpg

I was a huge pre-Morgan Reds fan. Any time the Reds were in town I begged Dad to take me. Every Reds-Astros game was super-fantastic, but my favorite involved Tony Perez who was my favorite Red. Perez hit a home run on a rope that was heading straight for us in left field (we sat about 15 rows up). Everyone in my family hit the deck, but as I looked up my Dad was jumping in the air with his arms outstretched. I'll never forget that image of Dad. (he didn't come close to catching it).

That's a beautiful display, Dave. Even a non-Reds fan like me can envy it!

My only Reds item is a 'faux-vintage' Mitchell and Ness 1936 pennant. I won it in a contest and it's been in my stack of Orioles/Colts/NYRangers pennants ever since. But I hang on to it thinking that one day I'll put it up.

I was able to add the final piece of my 1936-1941 Reds scorecards set. Those late-30's - early 40's teams are my favorite and I find it a shame that the 39-40 team that won back-to-back pennants and a World Championship are always overlooked when it comes to great teams.

You have to think that it was quite remarkable that the Reds, being a small market team even back then, were able to assemble a team consisting mostly of players from their farm system and some low-budget castoff veterans, that was able to beat the Giants (back-to-back pennant winners in '36 and '37) and the Cubs (pennants in '32, '35 and '38), not to mention a plucky Dodgers team that would win the pennant in '41. Add in there the Cardinals with their bottomless farm system and the Pirates who almost won the pennant in '38.

Though most of the '36-'41 Reds are footnotes today, they had the 1938 batting champ and NL MVP in Ernie Lombardi, the 1939 NL MVP with Bucky Walters and Frank McCormack, the 1940 NL MVP - three straight league MVP's!

Walters also won the pitcher's Triple Crown in 1939 and led the NL in wins again in 1940. Then of course you had Vander Meer's back-to-back no hitters in 1938.

Anyway, the '36 to '41 teams are my favorite, and I'm glad to have a scorecard from each season now...

What fun to see all the Cincinnati material! Here are a few pieces. There's Joe Morgan's visa application for the Reds' trip to Japan. Kind of an odd piece.

Then there's a letter from Bob Howsam the architect of the Big Red Machine. Howsam congratulates Warren Spahn on getting inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The third piece is a letter from then-Reds GM Warren Giles to Bucky Walters about his 1943 contract.

About three years ago I finally made a website for my collection. The links there for the players direct to their pages on the site. If you have a favorite guy he's probably got a page too.

It was really neat to see everyone's Reds' related material. Thanks for posting.

This is great stuff!

I grew up in Ohio...hated the Big Red Machine....watched the Carlton Fisk HR from a bar at my alma mater of OU....was the only person there rooting against the Reds.

Since they’ve fallen on hard times, I root for the Reds against the super powers  of the NL Central.

Glad someone else appreciates this era of the Reds! You should post some of your pieces.

Here's another late-30's piece I picked up on the cheap. Huskies cereal dated 1938 and put out just after Vander Meer pitched his back-to-back no-hitters.

A little rough with a corner missing, but I couldn't pass it up because of the great illustration and colors.
