Rough cut?
Curious - does this left border qualify as a rough cut? Not as much of the border displays the typical issue as with a normal rough cut - but the part there that looks “dinged” along the level of Nolan’s right hip to me looks like it has the properties of a rough cut and not just a one-off ding. You can see similar damage - although not as bad - both above and below that area.
Just curious - the card has gorgeous dark color, sharp corners and is nearly perfectly centered besides this issue - so I took it home from the LCS today for around the price of a 6. Did not realize how much color can vary on 69’s; I have another Nolan that was a PSA 4 which has a totally different presentation. Thoughts? Thanks. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9b3e6f0f00.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4fb54c53da.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4a947b87bb.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
A better pic of the overall presentation. Yes I just bought a scanner, but it’s at home…[emoji849]

I would say no. To me, that looks more like chipping.

I guess I'll muddy the water a bit. I agree with David there is some chipping, but that could be from the card having a rough cut. Back in the day, cards were cut with a wire. The edge of the card isn't smooth and demonstrates a rough cut, which again could cause some chipping during the cutting process.
The card presents well and looks great imo. |

Thanks. Either way I think it’s probably somewhere in the 6 range. I would be happy with that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I will defer to the experts, David and Dave.

Ok so it’s not a rough cut. (I’ve historically had trouble with this, so forgive me...) Assuming the corners are NM and nothing else egregious, what does it grade?

If PSA calls it paper loss, which with that much chipping they might, I'd guess a 2.5. Only way to know is to send it in.

2.5? I think a 5 would be harsh, but like you said, who knows. I don’t plan to send it anywhere; if I would it would be SGC, and certainly not PSA given recent days. For what it is worth, I have seen more modern cards with this exact same type of “chipping“ deemed a rough cut graded Mint 9. There is literally no difference in how the small surface tears present. But as this is a 1960’s card from a set without particularly documented harsh problems with rough cuts or chipping, I’m sure it would be treated differently. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Call it a rough cut or whatever, but those areas definitely look 'natural,' so it would be hard to stomach it if they were deemed a detraction.

Rough cut?
Similar damage on a ‘69 Mantle. This one is an SGC 5.

I wouldn't call that Mick similar, it looks like a beaver got to it.

Rough cut?
Another ‘69 Ryan, this one a PSA 5.

Yet another ‘69 Ryan with edge damage that’s a PSA 5. I think it’s safe to say mine is not in the 2 range...
