I can't remember the last time I bought a card without a qualifier, and here's another one that looks pretty nice...
Attachment 355326 We New Yorkers never even knew the minis existed until many years later, but out here at California card shows, I see them all the time. |
Drysdale RC
Soon to be freed from its slab and placed in my 1957 binder. :)

I don't collect this set or 'Johnny U' himself (so, it's available for trade), but I jumped on this really sharp, barely-a-hair-off-center card for a tiny fraction of what straight 9's go for...

eBay mailday: The ‘58 Aaron yellow name variation. In a strange turn of events, this card being added to my collection is actually some 3 decades in the making. When I was 12 in the fall of 1989, we took a trip north to visit family for Thanksgiving. There in a card shop somewhere in Philadelphia, a dealer sold me what he claimed was a “yellow letter” ‘58 Aaron. This being in the days before I could reach into my pocket, pull out a device and immediately see hundreds of pictures of different examples of the same card online, I listened to the dealer. But you see he claimed the “yellow letters” referred not to Hank’s name, but to the team name along the bottom right of the card. Yeah right. He was indeed correct - as ALL of the ‘58 Aaron’s have that particular detail in yellow letters. I learned the truth about which version of the card I had at some point upon returning home to North Carolina. Oh well. It was lower grade just like this one, and though that card is no longer in my collection - at the time I cherished it as any Hank Aaron card should be cherished - regardless of what color variation name it had. I saw this for a reasonable ask late last week and figured what the heck - it will be nice to “finally” get a yellow name Aaron...[emoji23]

Here are a few I picked up in June...

Nothing huge, but I picked these up today at the LCS. I've pretty much gotten rid of all my vintage (near complete sets of 1962 Topps and 1957 Topps and a complete 1958 Topps set) to pay off a surprise cruise for my wife and I. So I'm starting over.
Starting with these. Trying to decide which set to build first. May go with another '58. Not sure though. Might just stick to HOFers. https://i.imgur.com/5H31ynM.jpg?1 |

Baseball cards try a man's soul. Case in point...
Attachment 356623 At a show today, I saw this 1966 Mays and it looked, in the dim light of the venue, what most would call pack fresh. Really beautiful, despite being OC. However, the left side looked a little odd, so I laid it atop of a new card and saw it was a bit miscut, as part of it bubbled out further than it should, making it a tiny bit larger than it should be (the entire side except for the very middle). I figured I could easily live with that, especially with how much these #1 cards go for in mid-grades. After negotiating with the seller, I grabbed it for a 'great' price. That's the ecstasy. Now for the agony. After getting home, I really began examining it and BOOM!!!, when tilted in the light I saw there's a small wave on it, a thin wrinkle that seemingly only appears at surface/gloss level, not in any way going through to the other side, Freaking A!!!!!!!!!!!! My cheers turned to tears. Edited to add: Since a couple of people inquired, here are a couple of pics... This sadly shows the wrinkle in the light... Attachment 356661 And this shows how much wider the card is compared to a standard sized 'modern' card (check out the white of the Mays towering above the Molina card)... Attachment 356660 |

Nothing major here. Thinking of getting back on the '71 Topps horse. The Clemente will be freed sooner or later.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6f463457c2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b5e0b6338a.jpg

eBay mailday. The ‘64 Aaron was my first base card Aaron I had as a kid in the late 80’s. Of course being a kid I traded it (I think for a ‘63 Mays...) and have wanted another one ever since. Finally righted that ship today.
The Dalkowski card I have wanted ever since seeing Steve’s story on the “Fastball” documentary on Amazon. The inspiration for Nuke LaLoosh! His story while sad, is still pretty incredible. And Winfield because...well why not pickup a HOF RC for less than $20? I can do without razor corners... Happy Monday all! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...228ef885fc.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...20a7b1e2dd.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d47e5f48d8.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

A few recent pickups.
One for my 52 Topps collection and a couple good deal cards I couldn't refuse. |
Parlayed a Kaline RC into this trio of cards that fit my collecting interests a little more.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d16652b0fc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c72dd3e443.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...56d511f6ca.jpg

In the grand scheme of things, this card is nothing, but for any of my 1972 obsessed brethren, take a look at the (slight tilt aside) centering on this Gil Hodges, one of the unquestionably hardest cards in the set to find even remotely centered (take a quick look at all the 1972 #465's listed on COMC to get an idea of what I'm talking about)...
Attachment 357202 |
Finally found a copy of this card where the tilt problem is relatively contained and my OCD can live with it. Not sure why the tilt is so prevalent particularly in the high series for ‘72.

Nice. The ‘54 Campy was one of my first vintage star cards as a kid, and has always held a mesmerizing look for me. I think it has something to do with the angle of the shot and the fact that his cap looks more like a beanie or something with the sides sticking out. The card probably won’t win any awards for best photography, but I fell in love with it at an age before such things mattered much. Will always be one of my favorites. Yesterday’s LCS haul. For two players with A-list 1960’s power, I think both of these guys are relatively underrated in the hobby today:
