Starcal Decals

3 Attachment(s)
I have been slowly collecting Starcal Decals (or, Star Cal Decals; or, Star*cal Decals), and really like some of the images. I have seen information about the Type 1's (4 1/8 X 6 1/8), 1 image per card, and the Type 2's (4 1/8 X 3 1/16, 2 images per card. I recently purchased the attached. The Cardinals I bought from a dealer at a local show here in St. Louis and he and I thought it might have come from an uncut sheet. Later, I bought the Cubs from a well-known dealer via eBay and he described it as an advertising display. Now that I have the Cubs, I know that the Cardinals is not from an uncut sheet. But, in looking at the back of the Cubs it looks to be the same language used on the Type 1s and 2s. And, there is nothing to suggest that it was used for advertising. I also note that these 2 "sheets" are the last 6 cards of Type 2 - 92A-C and 93A-C.

Has anyone else seen any of these sheets, or know if there is a checklist of them?

Are there any other collectors of Starcals out there? I have a number of doubles that I would not mind trading for ones I don't have yet.

I have 20-30 of the actor/actress each in Blue and Red and a couple BB. The Nonsports are WAY cheaper than the BB are. Great, neat collectibles though. I've seen the 6-off ones before but have no idea how many would be in that 'set'

Thanks, Tom. I have also seen displays for the actors/actresses and the baseball ones. I don't know much about the company who made the, Meyercord. But, based on some cursory internet research it seems that Meyercord made lots of different decals, for crafts, hobbies, business and even as tax stamps.

Interesting-seems like it's possibly something meant for sale at MLB concession stands.

Star Cals are a really neat, offbeat collectible; the photo selection is fantastic.

Hi Mike:

In my Ashburn collection I have the below. I had never seen one before as well, and have asked many advanced collectors through the years and most have said they have never seen the three high version. Seems strange these are so seldom seen.

Just realized yours are the same team plaers, while mine has players from three different teams!!?? And mine has duplicate poses of the layers whileyours have all different poses.

Fred,

Thanks for sharing this - very interesting. Yours is sheet "89", I guess. According to the SCD vintage price guide and other checklists, the type 2's are 89C (Ashburn), 89A (Garver), 89D (Kiner) and 89B (Fain/Zernial). I guess they gave Ferris and Gus the short shrift. Some of the small Type 2s have the same photo replicated rather than 2 different players or 2 different poses of the same player like the Musial. Also, the numbering is odd - some of the numbers are all for one team with 3 letters (e.g., 93 is all Cardinals and 84 is all Yankees) while 89 has 4 letters and is 2 A's and 1 each of Phils and Pirates. So, I am wondering if there is a complete set of the 3 panels, what did they do with 89B? There are 4 87's (the White Sox), so maybe they put one of those with Fain/Zernial, but what about the 3rd panel?

I hope others post theirs and we can try to put together a checklist.

Anyone else?

Mike

I have a simple question…what year(s) are these from??

Koufax32fan 07-14-2014 10:40 PM

1952. They were made and distributed by a Chicago-based company named Meyercord. Meyercord also made decals of actors/actresses and many other images.

Here's a movie star.......Bob Hope.......Star Cal. I've only seen singles in the movie stars.....they come in red and blue. I've got 26 Blue and 25 Red checklisted. Wondering if I made a mistake on the Blue and that there are 25 each......There is mostly duplication between the two but also some differences. I've got 21 of the 25 Red I've checklisted and 22 of the 26 Blue I've checklisted. Only have 1-2 of the baseball. The prices of the Baseball--especially the BIN's is really ridiculous. Hundreds of dollars for the pairs and steep for the singles too. I've tried to pick them off occasionally but only been successful a couple times. Neat collectibles though.

Here's a display of the actors/actresses similar to the BB displays that are out there. I missed out on a similar display on ebay just above $150

A similar baseball display. The pair sold for $2000+ in a REA auction

Here's a regular Meyercord decal in a similar (but pink border) package

Beckett Will Grade Them And Slab Them BUT

http://imagehost.vendio.com/a/204295...JACKIE_NEW.JPG

......Beckett is conservative on grades--- I was expecting a much higher number ( as usual , but hey don't we all ? ).

...This Jackie is absolutely gorgeous , despite my crummy scanning abilities and old antiquated equipment .

I'm leaning towards the thought that these decals were for adults and the rich kids ; because 15 cents in 1952 would buy you three nickel packs of crisp bright new high-number '52 Topps baseball cards- come, share the fantasy with me.....

I cannot remember where I picked this up but was always my intention to fill up with Yankees and display. But the original envelope says Brooklyn BBC so it just never seemed right. Maybe a Star Cal / Dodger Fan could give it a good home.

Prices for decals

So, only rich kids will buy the baseball decals for 15 cents, but the holiday decals were 39 cents. And, why are the baseball decals 5 cents more than the Lucille Balls and other actors/actresses. Hmmmm...Meyercord must have had some really smart marketing people to know the right prices to set.
