Homage or coincidence? 1974 Dave Kingman

One of my favorite cards is the 1974 Topps Dave Kingman. I always liked the eerie, fuzzy crowd backing his big swing. I bought a few packs of Heritage for nostalgia's sake today, and I immediately noticed a similarity!
Coincidence or not, I think it's pretty cool :) |
coincidence, but interesting.

Possibly not coincidence. Heritage has a history of including homage photos for some of the more unusual cards in the original set featuring a player on that same team. Like 2019 Neshek and 1970 Lowell Palmer

The 1974 Kingman card reminds me of the old show "Night Gallery" with its eerie paintings.
With the pose and the background and the team, I'm not sure it's a coincidence. I wonder if the company would confirm that if you knew who to ask. If you're going to the National, you might be able to talk to someone there at the Topps corporate booth! |
Not a coincidence. Check out Ohtani compared to Nolan Ryan. Or the Hank Aaron/Aaron Judge tribute cards, or the Tony Kemp/Reggie Jackson, or most tellingly Seaver/Scherzer. These are deliberate choices paying homage to the original 1974 set.

Not a coincidence. It likely has the same card # as the ‘74 original. Al Kaline and Spencer Torkelson this year are another example.

That's pretty cool. Is there by chance another one in the set that's similar to Steve Garvey's 1974 card? Due to it being his MVP year card, it sadly gets more acclaim than the Kong does.
|
Sadly? It's a pretty decent card and Garvey, whether he deserved it or not, was MVP that year and went on to have a pretty good career.
I am admittedly biased and I still like Kingman, but I'd take the Garvey over the Kingman every time. Kingman had another nice card in 77, but I'd take the 77 Garvey again over the Kignman in that set too. Quote:

I'd die if they paid homage to Kent Tekulve's '88 Fleer card. Oh, and the Kingman and Flores are different numbers. I'm naive about modern but I am guessing there are fewer than 600 cards in Heritage base. |
Sometimes its a card number, sometimes it's a pose, sometimes it's both but they always try to mimic something from the original set.
Really cool you found the Kingman mimic Rich |
Catadioptric lens for the Kingman, maybe? I'm not familiar with all the equipment the photographers might have been using.
