I want To See Some Pre-War Game Used Relics

This thread is for pre-war game used relics. I'm not sure what's out there and that's why I want to see it.

My contribution is the final pitch from a June 15, 1926 game between the Philadelphia Athletics and Cleveland Indians.

The Athletics would win the game 5 to 0 on a complete game shut out from Rube Walberg. This baseball was the last pitch thrown in the game and was sold to me by Walberg's daughter. Reading the box score it appears that HOFer Joe Sewell made the last out:

This seems like a good excuse to bust out my Federal League game ball again, from August 3, 1914.

HB "Dutch" Leonard no-hitter game used ball 1916

2 Attachment(s)
Here is an actual game used ball from Hubert Benjamin "Dutch" Leonard's 1st no-hitter game on August 30, 1916 at Fenway Park. This was the second no-hit game ever thrown at the original Fenway Park. Note in the 2nd panel that the ball was a gift of Red Sox player Chick Shorten ("Ball given by Shorten").

This ball was an attic find in Rochester, NY and surfaced about 4 years ago, fresh to the hobby after nearly 100 years. I'm really proud to own this in my collection which is focused on no-hitters. It's an awesome ball to look at in person. The photos really don't do it justice.

This one is pre-WWI.
Game ball, April 25, 1912. Chief Bender vs. Russ Ford at Hilltop Park. Ball notated by Bender, ex Bender collection.

That has to be the most impressive game used bat collection that I have ever seen. How long did it take you to put it together?

Can I ask a dumb question? Why are my pictures too large to post? i am taking the pics with a simple iphone. I have some awesome vintage T206 player bats, and a game used glove, and an autographed ball that I would love to share here but it says that the file is too big. I am taking the pic with a simple iphone. Any help or suggstions? Thanks!

Brendon,
On your iPhone, when it gives you an option on what resolution to use, select Medium. This should work.

I hope this helps!

Bpm0014 06-10-2014 10:16 PM

I'll try. Thanks!!

John -- Thanks for the kind words, I've been collecting game used bats of HOFers for about 25 years.
Clint -- I'll have to post the Johnson bat now!
Denny -- can't pinpoint the Clarke bat to Fred, but it does match his specs.

1923 Zack D. Wheat autographed ball

1 Attachment(s)
Hello All, I just cleared out our attic in Oklahoma and found squirreled away in a box this ball (in the photograph) that belonged to my dad, who was from Brooklyn. The ball unfortunately isn't in the best shape, although good enough to read with some effort. The ball reads Zack D. Wheat, Brooklyn "Dodgers", Season 1923 This is particularly interesting because at the time Brooklyn was more commonly referred to as the "Robins". My dad was born in '26, but his dad was a big baseball fan, which makes me believe that the ball was originally my grandfather's. However, I'm not sure of the provenance.

In addition, it's perhaps not pre-war but in the same box I also found a ball from Pee Wee Reese which was made out to my dad: To "Buster" Stephenson, Merry Christmas From Pee Wee Reese, Dec. 25, 1940, Louisville, KY. Pretty exciting!

Lathe bats from H&B used to make game bats for players. These are all HOFer models. Some are tough to read in the photos.

Greg,
Very nice, but those photos look lonely. I think you need a nice autographed 3x5 to put on there with them! :D

Mark

sayhey24 08-05-2014 09:34 AM

You're probably right Mark -- I still have Fred Clarke's frame that I haven't put anything into yet, so maybe that's the way I go with that!

Thanks Brendan -- I really like your focus on T206 players -- that's a great idea!

Wow Dave...

That might be the most incredibly unique piece ever posted in the acquisitions thread. Amazing/rare style cap in its own right... not to mention the customized glasses set-up. Oh, and a Hall-of-Fame Player, to boot.

Incredible piece.... are there any photos of Hafey actually wearing this ensemble? Wood love to see them, if so!
