Ruth gehrig autographed photo thoughts?

1 Attachment(s)
Howdy all,
I'm new to the forum and thought that this would be an entertaining and informative way to learn about and maybe sell this autographed photo. Please see the attachment. My grandfather took the photo and had it developed, but I don't know how or when he had it signed. The photo was is a gray steel frame/stand that my father put it in until recently. The JSA folks and a local baseball/golf autograph business friend think that it' s genuine which supports my first-hand life experience. Where and when was the photo taken? When did Lou sign "Lou"? What's it's value and how does one advertise it to those who might have interest? Thanks BB

BB,

Welcome to the boards. A GREAT photo indeed. I can't speak about the autographs, but I can say with certainty that's from St. Louis (Sportsman's Park) and sometime between 1930 (probably even 1931) and 1934.

Hope that helps someone!

Graig

I don't think Gehrig ever signed his name with quotes. At least I've never seen one.

In his early career he did:

That is circa 1923 when he first came up.

And, for what it's worth, my opinion is that the signatures on the photo are good, while Stanesq's Gehrig is not.

While I appreciate you calling it my Gehrig, its actually from the PSA exemplar archives.

Then it's definitely bad! ;)

Which would rule out the possible quotation marks surrounding "Lou"s early-career signature.

I'm not crazy about the Ruth.

The baseline is off on both names, Babe and Ruth, the 'e' a total horror. The roof-line on the 'uth' is off, typically an even ascending gradient, ( / ), the hook on the end of the 'h' that bypasses the typical, one motion starting point of the line crossing the 't'.

Could be a filed-written, hand supported signature because as many of the elements that look suspect to me, are equaled out by the promising features.

Gehrig used quotes on occasion through the early 1930s. The example I showed--a page from New York sportswriter Rud Rennie's scrapbook--was signed in 1927. And here's the facsimile signature--definitely a copy of a genuine signature--from Gehrig's 1932 baseball board game:
