1949 LEAF BB set re-visited....show us your cards

The 1949 LEAF's aren't the most pretty looking cards in the hobby, but there is a certain appeal to them. Anyhow, I have quite a sentimental attachment
to these cards, as they were my first colorized BB cards I collected when I was a kid. I still remember opening a pack and finding a Babe Ruth card. They
were great for flipping, or scaling with your buddies. I still have my original 49-card set from my youth. Never saw any of the 2nd series (49 cards) in our
neighborhood in Hillside, NJ. These so-called Short-Prints were distributed only to Eastern Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio.

I'll start this show with my two favorites. Looking forward to seeing your 1949 LEAF cards.

I don't have any scans handy, but this is my all-time favorite set. I love it that they look like Andy Warhol was making baseball cards. (And in 1949! Those folks at Leaf were way ahead of the time.)

When I first got back into collecting, around 1998, these cards did not do much for me. Over time, though, I have learned to appreciate their unique beauty. The set is definitely an acquired taste, and I like the challenge of finding the odd color variation or perfectly registered HOFers.

I agree with the Warhol comparison. Years ago I made this "sig" to put after my posts on some of the forums, and it was inspired by the classic Warhol silkscreens for which he was known.

In general, I'm not a fan of this issue as many of the images are blurred or otherwise inferior to all other sets...see the Newhouser scan posted as an example.

My two do not suffer from that problem, nor did the Musial RC I sold recently.

Complementary pair of wrong backs from my 2nd 1949 LEAF set.

These inverted backs on the cards in the 2nd (SP) series tells us that the printer simply ran the pre-printed 49-card sheets (of fronts)
in reverse when doing the back print run. All 49 subjects in this series have been found with wrong-backs.

I've never seen 1st series wrong-backs from this set. Anyhow, if you have 1949 LEAF wrong-backs, please post them here.....Thanks.

While the 1st series of 49 cards of this 1949 LEAF BB set were very available in most states throughout the country in the early Spring of 1949,
the 2nd series (49 cards) were issued in the Summer of 1949 and were regionally limited to Eastern Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.
These 2nd series cards, as most of you know who collect this set, are extremely tough to find. And, are referred to as Short-Prints.

There are some pretty nice looking Babe Ruth cards on display in this thread. Here are my two Ruth cards from my two sets.

The fine looking Ruth on the left...I paid only a penny for in the Spring of 1949. It is not unusual to find the Babe Ruth cards
from this set in pretty nice condition, because a lot of us kids did not "flip" them, nor stick them in our bicycle spokes (as we
did with many of the other LEAF cards in our youth).

Ted, thanks for all the images. Sometimes I think the only way to appreciate the beauty of a set is to see many of the cards side by side. Especially a set with so many colors.

Side note, the inclusion of Ruth has puzzled me....as do the high prices for that card since it was not issued during his playing days. It makes that set even harder to put together for a collector on a budget!

Hi
In the Spring of 1949, many of us kids were excited to open up a LEAF pack to find a Babe Ruth card. It was still very fresh in our minds when Babe Ruth passed away in August 1948.
LEAF Gum Co. sold a lot of cards by including Ruth in this set.

Furthermore, they sold a lot cards in 1949 by "skip-numbering" these cards. This was a "nasty" little marketing trick that kept us kids spending a ton of pennies buying these cards, in
the quest of filling in our sets with the missing numbers. Many of which did not exist.

The long-sleeve card of Cliff Aberson appeared in the early issues of the 1949 LEAF cards. The short-sleeve version
appeared later in the game. My guess is that the short-sleeve Aberson cards are simply the result of printing flaw.

Ted -

You make reference to " short print " with some of the cards. Is this due to the cards being a " single print " in relation to the rest of the cards, or were all cards to be printed in the same amount, but due to layout of the cards on a sheet some were overlooked and not placed as often for printing.

1949 LEAF set re-visited....show us your cards

Hi Lou

The so-called "Short-Prints" is a term which the hobby years ago used to identify these cards. I prefer to refer to these 1949 LEAF cards as the "2nd series" cards
which were issued in the Summer of 1949. These 49 cards were limited in both production and distribution. Research indicates that this 2nd series of 1949 LEAF's
were marketed only in Eastern Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. While the 1st series of 49 cards were marketed in large numbers nationwide.
My understanding as to why this occurred was due to litigation problems between the BOWMAN GUM CO. and the LEAF GUM CO. in 1949.

All 49 cards in this 2nd series are displayed in this thread in Posts #22, 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31.

Note that SGC identifies the year of these Premiums as 1949. And, I think PSA does, also. Yet they incorrectly identify the 1949 BB cards. Trust me, guys...…
these Premiums were inserted in the 24-count Wax-Back boxes which the 1949 BB cards were packaged in. I would say, PSA and SGC are totally confused ! ?

In early press runs Kent Peterson is depicted with a black cap. Later issues of 1st series cards Kent Peterson is depicted with a Red cap.
My guess is LEAF changed the color of his cap to be consistent with the 3 other Cincinnati players in the 1st series. The Red cap version
is much tougher to find.
