1915 CJ's... Am I Alone On This Preference?
I actually find examples with unobtrusive caramel staining more desirable than unblemished copies. To me, it's sort of like a badge of honor for the card, in that you can imagine someone pulling it from that CJ box a century ago. Just adds a certain charm and character to a specimen. So perhaps I'm nuts, but I'd bid higher on one with some well-placed stains. Be interesting to see where others shake out on this.

I completely agree =)
If I could get other E cards with candy stuck to them, I'd do that too. |

I moved this from the BST to get more responses.....As for me, I don't mind candy staining on candy cards if it's not too obtrusive. There is a bit more on this Jennings than I normally care for but for $45 it wasn't a bad pick up...

I completely agree, I love the staining on the card which proves it was pulled from a box. Found this 1915 at the national:

Thanks for moving it, Leon. Much appreciated.
Glad to hear I'm not alone in my preference for a little candy staining! Had been lusting after a Cobb for a loooooong time. Should have a scan coming soon ;) |
big difference
the difference is essentially a Factory Set vs. hand collated set...
the stain free cards never came in a box of cracker jacks...kind of lessens the value in my eyes... would rather have a card that actually came in the box! |
I prefer unstained but have some stained. Trades anyone?
|
Completely agree!
That is one of the reasons that I gravitated towards the 1914 set over the 1915 set. I think the caramel stains add some personality to the cards. |
Not me. If I had a stained one, I would probably end up licking it like a tootsi pop.

And then there is stained...
This one has hairs stuck to it. |

Ted- those hairs are just wrong :).
Here are a few 1915s, as was first referenced in the initial post. My mistake for posting 1914s. |
Agreed, and I like the 14's even better than the 15's.
|
It's all about individual taste. I wouldn't exclude a card with minor staining and I have a really nice cobb where a mouse ate the bottom left corner that I'm assuming was covered in caramel lol.

Like this one....stain is on the back. This is one of my favorite cards. I am not sure why....and I am not sure what a "white" stain consists of....

Stains or no stains, theyre all great! Here's a halo stain...

Call me crazy, but I prefer unstained. I like natural aging and toning, but I can do without the stains. Judging by the recent onslaught of unstained, high grade 1914's, it seems like the card doctors have gotten pretty good at removing stains. The problem is the fronts always look a bit washed out afterwards.

Thx, Rainier-- easily the luckiest snag in my collecting lifetime. Always hear about such lucky buys but never stumbled onto one myself before. Was actually on the phone with a fellow board member when we both realized what a deal it was-- could not hit the BIN fast enough. Had to double check the transaction went through and was real.

Wow Matty, saw this one on Ebay and you got it at a steal. Wish I had saw it first!
|
Nice addition, Matt -- CONGRATS!!
(I can now rest easy at night knowing you will no longer be after my CJ Cobby ;) ) |

CW's outstanding CJ Cobb was one of the cards that really drew me into the older classics realm. That card was an inspiration. Glad to see someone else is already in pursuit of it!
|
Matt, Chuck, I hope you don't mind me sharing this one. I don't know many on N54--mostly a CU guy, but thought I'd share this Matty.

I agree with this philosophy regarding most...if not all cards. If a vintage card came with a story book of it's history...how boring a story would it be if it said..."I got this card from a man as he was leaving the smoke shop...I rushed home and put it in the middle of my bible...and never touched it again!"

Is that the card that was recently given away in the Set Registry promotion? Either way, great card, Dan! Here's a couple 1914's... the Tinker was the first CJ I ever picked up -- just a small dab of caramel on the front of his jersey. The Crawford is more recent, and more stained, and sits in and SGC 60 holder. I might have only 5 or 6 cards from this issue, but they are among my faves. Much of their charm lies in their simplicity. I have to pick up that recent book on the set, too. http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...ack-joe-tinker http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...k-sam-crawford |
Oh, and, nice Cobb, Rich! At least the mouse stopped chewing before the "Cobb".

stains
Back in the 70s i used to buy and sell, carmel, tobacco, cracker jack, goudeys cards etc with stains, glue, tape, writing, with absolutely no problem, and i guess the reason was because it seemed like about 1/2 the cards in existence had this issues! of course we always had a select few that wanted nothing to do
with such issues and these were the high class collectors and would pay more money for the cleaner cards, so some people/dealers learned how to clean this cards, so they could nail this high class collectors for more money!! now a days i wonder what happened to those thousands of cards with such issues that went through my hands?? OH YES is now called paper loss!! and is widely accepted. finally i think this stain issues are proof of authenticity sort of. |
Chuck, yes that is correct.

This is my 1914 CJ type card. If PSA hadn't put the (ST) qualifier on it I would not have been able to afford it. Sometimes qualifiers are a good thing!!
|
Absolutely love the caramel stained 1915 CJ's. As a teacher who doesn't make a ton of money, the only way I can afford to collect the set is PSA 1 or raw in the same condition. Caramel stains are a way of life for me when it comes to this set.
If anyone has any PSA 1's or raws that would grade out a 1, PM me. I would love them! |
