I am still a huge fan of this kid!

But if you are looking for an investment, I think there might be better choices out there.

Sell half.

bigfanNY 05-03-2019 03:32 PM

I don't think you can go wrong collecting your favorite player. And it is always less expensive to add to your collection when that player is injured or in a slump. Now that is differant from buying 50 of his best rookie as an investment. I have a decent collection of Gary Sanchez, Aaron Judge,Gleyber, Andujar. And I keep adding too it. Will it be worth as much as my Mike Trout Cards? Probably not. But I enjoy them. And I enjoyed looking at your Aaron Judges, Thanks for sharing.

...or thereabouts - if this is investment/flipping stuff. Although there probably won't be much harm in waiting until he comes back and hoping for a bump at that point.
Another way of looking at it is if you can sell half of it and recoup your costs, you can let the other half ride, enjoy it and not have to care about what happens in the future.

I collect mostly all vintage ,,10 pct new ,,this is like the stock market .up and down ,,vlad ,bellinger ,tatis ,trout ,soto ,harper ,,.the list goes on and on ,,what people dont tell you is the amount of players who dont pan out ,,its scary .I love vintage it makes me happy.I bought judge real early.the autos were expensive ,,You win some and lose some.love net 54 and all the friends ive made here .octavio

Yastrzemski Sports 05-04-2019 05:57 AM

Judge is a phenom and has been awesome to watch. He’s 27 and has a hard time stayed my healthy. I don’t think his career numbers are going to be there at the end. That’s compared to a Trout who started young and piles on numbers.

Rich Klein 05-04-2019 05:44 PM

With the exception of Mr. Trout, the new card market is real simple. If you sell while player is hot and everyone who wants those cards you will make money,.

If you hold out for maximum dollars, you lose a big percent of profit.

if you buy on the downside and player makes another run, sell as quickly as possible

If you buy on the downside and player never makes another hobby run but ends up with HOF type numbers, the hold will net you an eventual win,

If you buy on the downside and the jig is up so to speak, then you are probably out most of that money.

Would I be buying any Nick Stenzel's, Vlad Guerrero Jrs or other players who are on the up market right now. No, I'd be selling into the up market and not looking back. Most of the time I'm proved correct by doing so.

Regards
Rich

Agree with you 100 pct,,thats why i stick with vintage.rich im into him cheap ,,ive never invested in no one like him ,,so well see,Now is not the time to panic. This is like the stock market ...up and down ,,but well put rich .octavio

many failed investments on Rookie cards

many failed investments on Rookie cards
I recently saw a modern collection of baseball cards mostly Rookie cards
that had been sitting in a closet for many years
I passed on the collection
among the Rookie Card Gems were
400 Bob Hamelin former Rookie of the year
200 Ben Grieve
200 John Olerud
250 Kevin Maas
200 Jerome Walton former Rookie of the year
400 Mark Grace
500 1987 Topps Will Clark
500 1987 topps Bobby Bonilla
200 Ron Kittle former Rookie of the year

obviously a band wagon jumper
had he flipped them after one year he could have made a mint
but here these duds were collecting dust in a closet
going for pennies on the dollar and with no takers .
MORAL OF THE STORY IF YOUR GOING TO LOAD UP ON UNPROVEN
PLAYERS with less than 5 years under their belts
GET A BIGGER CLOSET

Yep a cautionary tale. All these kids look great on paper and in Baseball America and in the Midwest League or whatever. But the reality is only 1-3 a year are going to be HOF type players when all is said and done.

The funny thing about the junk era is that a lot of players absolutely became legends...and their rookie cards are worth little.

How about this lineup (let's leave aside the players involved in steroid accusations)

Randy Johnson- Best LHP of All-Time 89 RC $1 (I've bought at 25c at shows)
Craig Biggio- 3000 hits, 20 years with one team 88 XRC $5
Roberto Alomar- .300 lifetime, 12x All-Star, 10x Gold Glove...88 RC .50-$1
Mike Mussina- 83.8 WAR, 268 Wins, 5x All-Star...91 RC .50-$1
Pedro Martinez- 84 WAR, one of the most dominant pitchers in history 91 RC $1
John Smoltz- Outstanding starter/closer, RC 50c/$1
Greg Maddux- Along with Clemens and Johnson the premier pitcher of the era, 87 RC $1
Barry Larkin- HOF shortstop, entire career with Reds, 12x All-star, 87 Rookies 50c.

If you had 100 of each of those rookie cards in 1991 and I told you from the future that each of these guys would be legendary Hall-of-Famers you would think this group would be worth a luxury car...nope, you can get 1 copy of each for under $10 without a lot of work.

This leaves aside the guys like Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, Sosa, Sheffield who were tainted by the steroid scandal and guys like Baines and Raines who are considered more marginal Hall-of-Famers.

Rich Klein 05-08-2019 10:32 AM

I have sold more Harold Baines cards this year than in the past 5 years I've been selling cards at shows. His HOF selection shocked enough people to buy those cards. Now I did not raise my RC prices but $2-3 each for Topps and $1 for Fleer is perfectly fine by me.
