The Elusive One

Do you have a card that you have been looking for forever it seems but you just can't ever seem to find it or if you do it seems that someone else has been looking as long as you but values it more? I don't mean an impossible card, I mean a card that you should be able to find with relative effort but it just never seems to pop up.

My example is a 1923-24 Jim Bottomley Exhibit.

I had the same issue with the '23-'24 Al Simmons Exhibit but fially found one several years ago by way of a beggar's rq on the BST.

E101 Lajoie. When I think of the some of the really tough Lajoie cards that I've picked up I since started looking in earnest for an E101, it makes me shake my head.

judsonhamlin 05-25-2009 07:58 PM

My nemesis for a long while was the T206 Byrne with something other than a Piedmont back. I think I got sniped/outbid/beat to the email on BST countless times before I finally grabbed a decent Tolstoi-backed copy. I had the same problem with the 1964 Curt Flood - I know that there is at least one collector who hoards them. That was a 5:01 Friday purchase at Reading a year ago.

Don't really like the Exhibits much, but finding one signed would sure boast the price!

Mastro 6/21/2007 $1.008

I would be very tempted to pay that price for a signed one! Besides, you get a lot more cardboard with this one than the MpC. :)
Great card!

It took me 35 years to get around to picking up this card:

I'm always on the lookout for an M101-5 Joe Wood (any back type) or his M101-4 counterpart (any back type, except for TSN.) Seems like examples that fit my budget rarely pop up.

For some reason, cards of Frank Arrelanes are tough for me. Been looking for awhile for his Ramly and Sporting life cards.

elusive

a T206 Drum back took me decades until a friend from this board parted with one of his for a 1982 price.

Tip Top Dreyfuss
W600 Burkett
Cabanas Pete Hill

But it's really no secret why these don't pop up very often.

Wite3 05-25-2009 11:18 PM

Pre-war toughie for me is M101-2 Dooin. Always outbid for some reason.

Post-war toughie is a 1958 Kahn's Wally Post (only Phillie in all the Kahn's series).

Neither card is extremely rare but I always seem to be outbid on these...drives me crazy.

The Elusive One

A reasonably priced N172 Williamson and mascot

philliesphan 05-26-2009 06:03 AM

Chas. Fergsuon cabinet card

I have seen scans of four [non-Old Judge], and know that there are a few N173s...but have never seen one for sale or auction.

Mrc32 05-26-2009 06:33 AM

Not all that rare

Not all that rare, but t205 Addie Joss has always alluded me for whatever reason. Timing has never been right, cost has always been to much....etc. The stars never aligned.

Well, I recently picked one up and am thrilled to have it. It is low grade, maybe a SGC 20-SGC 30, but it still sits pretty in my collection. Now I just need to find a way to upgrade it.

Next most elusive... t205 Christy Mathewson. Again, not rare at all, just have to find one at the right price at the right time. I bet over the years, I have bid on 150 of these and never won one.

bcbgcbrcb 05-26-2009 06:49 AM

Been looking for a Cy Young RC (or even something close to the early 1890's) for a long time but no luck so far...........

pitchernut 05-26-2009 07:08 AM

Elusive ones

M116 Tully Sparks, D381 Frank Allen, D338 Dave Davenport any and all E107's that I need (Ned Garvin, Frank Hahn, Jack Harper, Roy Patterson, Willie Suddoff, Geoge Winter) for under $100!!! (that might be why hu?)

DixieBaseball 05-26-2009 07:25 AM

What Rock could I look under to find one ?

W601 - 1903 Sporting Life Team Composite of Nashville Southern League Champs

DaveH 05-26-2009 09:17 AM

My elusive card is the 1929 Kashin Jesse Haines as noted by my WTB below. It's the last card I need to complete the set. It's definitely a short print since no one on the set registry has one either.

JasonL 05-26-2009 09:38 AM

Yeah, plenty

but, one that has infuriated me for the last 6 months, (although I have not been actively looking for the past few anymore, given finances)...is a T206 Dummy Taylor with a nice sharp image/registration, for under $100. I reserve the thought that I may be unreasonable about the price expectation here, but I just refuse to believe that it should cost me more than $100.

Hence, I still don't have one!

Mark 05-26-2009 09:42 AM

I can't seem to find an E220 Babe Adams. I would also like to get an E120 Jesse Barnes in vg. Most of the other cards that I am looking for are generally in demand.

sesop 05-26-2009 10:12 AM

E97 Hemphill

I've been trying to track down an E97 Hemphill (color or B/W) for a couple of years. In a period of a week during the past month, I've picked up 2 of my 3 most wanted cards- so- it stands to reason that the elusive E97 Hemphill is going to appear out of thin air- right? (hint, hint)

Kehfee 05-26-2009 10:20 AM

I suppose the card I'd like most would be a nice T205 Wilhelm. (The more common variation) in a three or four.

T205 Bergen is quite common but I've failed a handful of times to win one in auction. Before him my nemesis was a Fred Beck.

Here's a N173 of Ferguson........I don't have it, just the photo..........

Elusive One

My elusive one has always been the Orange Border Hal Chase. I've lost in a few auctions and can't seem to find any for sale :(

calvindog 05-26-2009 05:41 PM

Mike, the Orange Borders Chase comes up occasionally; I'd say that I've seen 2-3 over the past 4 years. You'll see it again.

sgbernard 05-26-2009 06:04 PM

3 T209 I's still elude me. Of them, I've had losing bids on two in various auctions. The most elusive one is the Booles. I'd sure love to cross that one off.

yomass 05-26-2009 07:04 PM

T222 Henry
E97 B&W Kroh

E93 05-26-2009 07:28 PM

I just noticed that the T206 Phillippe and the E93 are from the same photo.

Been looking for this one for a while.

1915 Zeenut McMullin

wrapperguy 05-27-2009 09:52 PM

Been looking for years for .........

1925 Exhibit of Bill Terry (would complete the set)
R311-1 Glossy of National League Champions of 1935 (completes the set)
T200 of St. Louis Americans (you guessed it - finishes the set)

MacDice 05-27-2009 10:56 PM

For me...

I have been looking for over a year for a decently priced 1926 or 1928 Zeenut card of Earl Averill. Of course I would love to stumble accorss an Averill PCL Exhibit but not going to hold my breath.

familytoad 05-27-2009 11:12 PM

E95 Cicotte nemesis

I probably passed on 5 different lower grade E95 Cicotte a few years back when the bidding got over 40-45 dollars, because there seemed to be one every time I looked. I thought I would eventually hit one for that range.
That's no longer the case, and the price is always 3-4 times that now...I guess that's why my E95 set has stalled...I still think its 2001.

My real nemeis was the T205 Wilhelm, I just refused to believe that card should cost so much and I went years without that card ( I don't bother with the suffered or suff red versions...) being one of the last cards as the set-killer. But last Christmas, the wife conspired to put 'Ol Kaiser under the tree. A dozen years in the making.

Good thread!
