Greatest Regional Sets .....

3 Attachment(s)
I love regional sets, as they are nice change of pace from the Topps and Bowman issues of the 50s, 60s and on into the 70s.

1954 has to be the greatest year for regionals, as Dan Dees, Red Hearts, Johnston Cookies, Wilson Franks, all came into existence. Stahl Meyers started the year prior, but issued cards that year as well.

Here are some examples, and would love to see others!

1964 Kahns would be my favorite regional set. Very beautiful cards.

DBesse27 07-17-2016 11:31 AM

Berk Ross were regional? I don't know much at all about that set. Can somebody educate me?

This has always been one of my favorite cards, regardless of value. I also like the knothole design, which takes you back to the days when kids watched gamed through the outfield fence.

Nice card Chuck!

Love Red Heart, Stahl-Meyer, Hires.... Berk Ross are terrible IMO

The regional issues I like best are the waxy Briggs, Esskay & Hunter meats cards that were intended to be cut off of the packages that contained hot dogs and other processed meat products. The first Briggs example below is not mine (I wish it were!), but the second is one of my pride and joys ( got the autographs at shows about 25 years ago).

Thank you for your kind words. I just have always loved this set since I've seen it and was the most enjoyable to put together.

Brett, ol' Teddy Ballgame could still hit .300 swinging a frankfurter. :p

As a Braves fan, I have to go with the '54 Johnston Cookies set as my favorite. But the '54 Wilson Franks set isn't far behind. That Williams card is simply divine, and I will own one, though a nice one will cost me a kidney.

The '54 Wilson Franks set actually has a really nice checklist. Only 20 cards, but Williams, Gil Hodges, Bob Feller, Nellie Fox, Roy Campanella, and a criminally underrated Vern Stephens...lots of star power in it. And, for Milwaukee baseball fans, a handful of players with a Beer Town connection: Harvey Kuenn, Red Schoendienst, and Brave Andy Pafko.

But the Johnston Cookies set trumps it. I mean, Hank Aaron's rookie card alone makes gives it "king of the mountain" status against all comers, imho.

BTW, Jerry, beautiful example of the '54 Williams you have there.

Thanks for the kind words Bill. I think it's one of the best looking cards in the hobby. Very fortunate to have it in my collection.

Is it me or is photography on the Morrell meats sets as nice as 53 Bowman?

Just picked up '60 Koufax. Also have the 1959 Dodgers team postcard that uses the same picture as the '61 Morrell meats Koufax (which I unfortunately don't own)

Not a Major League issue, but here's a rare regional

1 Attachment(s)
This is my lone example from one of the rarest post-war regional sets out there. A 1968 Red Barn Restaurant Memphis Blues Mike Jorgenson. I had been looking for just a picture of one for many years and finally came across a lot that sold on Ebay a few years ago. I managed to acquire this one from the buyer. A few from that lot have come up for sale on EBay since then, but other than that I haven't seen any others for sale online. The most recent example on EBay sold in June 2015. It was also a Jorgenson that was graded PSA 4, Population 1. It sold for $125.

Greatest regional sets

These 1949 Bowman PCL cards may not be the "greatest regional set"....but, it perhaps is the toughest post-war set to complete.

Displayed here are 12 of the 36 cards to complete this scarce set. I will post the other 24 cards later.

How many in the set Larry ? Why does no one else collect it ? Were they promotional items for a Dry Cleaning Company ? How were they packaged or distributed ? Did they have to be separated like the 64 Topps Tattoos ?

sflayank 07-21-2016 02:05 PM

Leaders cleaners

It was a dry cleaning chain
Located in chicago and kansas city
There are 20 in each set
I believe they are the paper band that was put around drycleaned shirts
They had to be sent in to get free tickets
I have 2 wsox and 1 kc
Never seen any others...a member of this board sold me 1

One of the hardest to find Cincinnati Reds regional set has to be the 1968 Uniroyal Keds set. I recently acquired a PSA 6 Johnny Bench rookie. The Bench isn't even listed in the SCD guide.

Nice Bench!

Were those perforated cards or did they have to be cut?

Big Red Machine 07-23-2016 05:48 AM

Thanks. They had to be cut.

While the MSA discs were nationwide, many of the backs were regional. Here are probably the 2 toughest regional backs. The no address Red Barn is tough.

Now that is a very cool looking Bench. I think I've seen one before in my past, but if I recall correctly the Bench wasn't in the greatest shape. I don't really do the registry thing, but that has to be the highest graded, correct?

Really like this thread...some great looking items.

Thanks. Yes, there are only two graded Bench's from this set, a PSA 1 and PSA 6. I own both and just recently sold the PSA 1.
