19th Century

How come you stopped so soon? Some good stuff in the 19th century, too! :D

1897 - Baltimore's Wee Willie Keeler gets 5 hits and‚ for the third time‚ scores 5 runs in a 20-2 rout of Chicago.

1896 - Pittsburgh defeats Philadelphia 8-7 in a bizarre finish. The Phillies score 3 runs in the top of the 9th inning to take a 7-5 lead only to see Pittsburgh score 3 in the bottom of the inning for the win. Bones Ely scores the tying run from 3B as the Phillies argue with the umpire following a disputed call. Philadelphia had neglected to request time out. Kid Carsey then comes in to relieve Jack Taylor and balks in the winning run.

1888 - Tommy McCarthy's 6 stolen bases pace the St. Louis Browns to 15 steals and a 10-3 victory over Kansas City. McCarthy also goes 5-for-5 at the plate.

1883 - Buffalo pummels last place Philadelphia‚ 21-6‚ led by 5 hits by both Jim O'Rourke and Hardy Richardson.

1880 - Rookie Harry Stovey hits his first Major League homerun‚ connecting off Jim McCormick as Worcester beats Cleveland 7-1. Stovey will be the first Major League player to reach 100 career homeruns.
