September memorabilia pickups

3 Attachment(s)
Here are three recent photo pickups that I thought were worth sharing that just arrived today:

Johnny Vander Meer sharing the pitching form that allowed him to pitch back-to-back no-hitters to the neighbor kids in Vandy's hometown of Midland Park, NJ. This photo was taken on June 16, 1938 at his home the day after he hurled his 2nd consecutive no-no at historic Ebbets Field. From RMY's recent auction that just ended.

A rare original action shot of Nolan Ryan's 2nd no-hitter on July 15th, 1973.
Ryan has always noted that this was his most overpowering pitching performance in his career. He fanned 17 Tigers en route to his 2nd no-hitter in 1973.
The exhibited cropping was used because this photo ran in the Detroit Free Press the next day. In my personal collection I own the catchers mitt that Angels catcher Art Kusnyer used to catch this game as well as a game used ball. This photo came by way of another Ryan advanced collector.

A terrific original action photo of Nolan in his 1st year with the Houston Astros 1980. This is perhaps my favorite image from Nolan's stint with the Astros. Also from RMY Auction. Thanks Rhys!

Nice Mug Mike....

I am slowly collecting early Cornell uniforms from across all sports. So far I have early pieces for Basketball, Track, Rowing and Baseball. Was happy to add this exceptional 1920s Letter sweater.

Nice pickups fellas. I just picked up 3 incredibly rare items for my Nebraska Indians collection. A Cover envelope, 2 page brochure, and a letterhead. The back side of the Letterhead details the advertising matter that Green would forward to the town they were going to be playing in. Nothing like this has ever surfaced as far as I know and as long as I've been collecting items from the team. I would dearly love to get a poster, I think that would be the holiest of holy grails for me. I would settle for a photograph of one of the posters..especially the 16 sheet poster. I'm sure those would have been affixed to the side of a building. There has to be a photo of one out there somewhere.

Thanks Joe. WOW on the sweater collection. You have an amazing collection and we all enjoy watching it expand my friend!!!

Congrats Dan. The Cover is great. Did the brochure and letter come with/in the envelope?

It actually is his girlfriend at the time (later to be his wife) and his sister. :D
The photo is totally a contrived shot by the photographer, but I still like it.

Jackie on February 16, 1958 in Jackson, Mississippi. Dubbed Jackie Robinson Day by the NAACP. He had just joined their board. Here he advocates for the peaceful pursuit of civil rights while angry white crowds gathered outside. The only thing I could afford from RMY! :D

Five months before the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and 6 months before returning to Mississippi to help raise $25,000 for a memorial for slain civil rights activists. Lunch with sports reporters at the Belvedere Hotel in Baltimore (the first Baltimore hotel to integrate back in 1957).

Well, it's not '27-30. Those road unis had Yankees on the front. So you've got 20-26 or 31-34.

Looked at 1926 pic found online compared to a 31. But I can't tell.

September is GREAT SO FAR! Im so glad I posted my goals for the remainder of the year because it resulted in a board member and I working out a trade for this rare fan (particularly in pristine condition) I've been searching for a long time:D

I realize this isn't Earth shattering for most, but the Cubbies version of these banks never seem to turn up. I consider it super rare. Cubs collectors are are pretty aggressive and the good stuff doesn't last long. This one is in exceptional condition. It was 4: 00 am when I found it so I took a sec to "make an offer" . The sellers settings were such that I was in the range and it was accepted immediately YEAH! Do any fellow Cubs collectors on the board agree with my scarcity assessment?

I've never seen the Cubs version. Off the top of your head, Mike, how many teams were represented?

Not many. Those that I recall are mostly Nats, Phils, Tigers, White Sox, Twins, Yanks. I would love to hear from others on this topic.

I have had a search in my settings for the Cubs forever and don't recall another opportunity to purchase one but I'm sure they are out there considering the number of banks in the Chicagoland area that may have used them.

perezfan 09-07-2016 12:28 PM

First Cubs example I've seen as well. I would add the Reds to the list of "commonly found" examples. I have been underbidder a few times on the Seattle Pilots, and also would love to find an Expos Bank like this (never seen one of those either).

Nice pickup, Mikey!!

Just snagged a lot of (somewhat) vintage lineup cards in the latest Hunt auction. The Weaver and Schoendienst will fit nicely in my HOFer lineup card collection and Martin is a nice one as well. Will likely consider moving the others (14 in total albeit most are carbon copies)

That pic looks surreal, imo.

I know Fedex/Kinkos likely has the most modern, best of the best, but I'd ask what they use if I were you.
