World Series Pins

Posted By: David R
Can anyone tell me anything about these two world series pins? The Yankees pin is made by Balfour and the Cardinals pin has no markings on the back. The Yankees pin says 33rd World Series and the Cardinals pin says 14th World Series on the bat. Any idea for what purpose they were made and the value?

Posted By: Mark
Well, the first is the Cardinals World Series Press Pin from 1985. But it should have "Balfour" stamped on the back side in large letters (should not have blank back). The value is normally about $85, but without the Balfour imprint, I am not sure...

The second is the NY Yankees World Series press Pin from 1981. It's worth about $150 in Mint condition.

Hope this helps...

Posted By: Anonymous
Most World Series pins were given to the Press for the games. Used as identification to get in and out of the stadium and other functions. I bought a 1984 Detroit Tigers World Series Press pin at the stadium from a Press person outside of the stadium..
Joe

Ty Cobb, Spikes flying!

Posted By: davidcycleback
Press pins were and still are given to the press, originally as identifiers then later mostly as tradition, and you can find them for the World Series, All-Star Game, Superbowl and more. Interestingly, the old AFL sometimes out matching press cuff links and tie clips for the championship game. There are press pin copies, which is why you check the stamping on the back. MEARS had an online article listing the correct stamping for all the WS pins, but you need to be a member to read their articles.

Posted By: Mark
Presspins.com has lots of info and actual images (year by year...) This company used to go by the name "Recollectics".

They also have retail prices listed, as they sell them on-line and have been doing so for some time. Keep in mind, that these prices are RETAIL, and would typically go about 30% cheaper on Ebay or via other mid-range auctions.

If you are looking to BUY press pins, the group lots offered by auction houses are the way to go. The "price per pin" is almost always less when they are offered in bulk, or in groups. Hope this helps.
