A Bad Week for Sid Luckman!

On Sunday Jay Cutler broke Sid Luckman's record for touchdown passes by a Chicago Bear (it stood for 72 years!) and last night Ryan Fitzpatrick broke Luckman's record for TD passes by an Ivy League alumni. I hate seeing longstanding records fall, especially when far less talented people break them! Ugh!

Doesn't even phase me any longer. The game is sooooo much different than it use to be that its just amazing that some of these records have stood as long as they have. Rule changes have made a mockery of most NFL records.

Here's a couple of Sid's for you from his college days at Columbia.

Great post! To paraphrase Benny Friedman - Where are you going to put these modern QBs on defense?

Jeff, love that exhibit!

Awesome Bread for Health! I LOVE those cards (too bad they're so damned rare and expensive)!

At Columbia Luckman only beat Yale once in 1938 (,but he only played against them once:D)

This is one of my favorite pieces. I actually lost the auction when it came up as a wire photo, but I liked it so much I put it on my wall next to my card case anyway.

I don't own a Sid Luckman card, but I have tons of admiration and respect for the man. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, and reading THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE sports section each day from age 10-on, I began learning about the history of the Bears, and of course Sid Luckman was well-spoken of in our area.

When the Chicago Bears were known as "THE MONSTERS OF THE MIDWAY", Mr. Luckman was their quarterback. When the Bears were at their zenith as a franchise, Mr. Luckman was their quarterback. When the most lopsided NFL championship game was played, it took place in 1940.

Bears 73

Redskins 0

Mr. Luckman was the quarterback for the Bears in that game.

Records are meant to be broken, but that kind of history is PLYMOUTH ROCK-solid. The Bears of '41 were the best of that bunch. The only game they lost was a cliffhanger to the Packers at Wrigley Field late in the season. It was so tense, several fans suffered heart attacks at the game. From what I recall reading of that thriller, sadly, two were fatal.

What a powerhouse the Bears were that season! I thought their home uniforms were so cool---midnight blue with small semi-gloss satin orange-red numbers.

Long live Sid Luckman's memory.

A little Luckman love - Leaf style (Original wire photo used for '48 Leaf, 1948 Leaf, 1948 Leaf signed by Luckman).

Thanks Scott - I always like seeing the photos cards are based on. Any theory as to why the "2" in "42" didn't turn out quite right for Leaf? Or is it just an illusion? Sometimes if I concentrate it looks like a "2", but kind of looks more like a "6" to me....
