Show A Non-Sport Autograph

I know this is primarily a sports sub-forum, but as much as I love sports I'd like to see some other sides of the autograph realm. Let's see some non-sports autographs from the Board.

Here's my Houdini letter from 1926. I especially like this letter because, as a writer, I can't help but appreciate how excited Houdini was about the new Colliers. I also love the flair in his signature. Seems like he was in a good mood that day:

Hey Packs,

I love this idea!! I have posted a couple of these in the January Pickups thread, but thought I would throw them up here as well to get this thread going...
  • Madison/Monroe Land Document
  • Andrew Johnson Pardon Document
  • Eisenhower Letter
  • JFK/Jacqueline autograph display
  • FDR Letter
  • Walt Disney Check
  • Jim Henson Check
  • PT Barnum Index

Got this unsigned back in 1997 and took me over 15 years, much $$ and traveled to 2 continents to complete. Have picture of Ford signing and has been signed by every cast and crew on poster, except a screenwriter who died before movie came out, plus James Earl Jones, Ian McDiarmid and Jeremy Bulloch. Probably the nicest overall piece in my collection. That being said, doesn't fit in with everything else I own, and probably would sell for right price.

Houdini is still on my short want list. Here are my two favorite non-sport:

I don't keep many autographs other than my rock book. Here are a few that are important to me.

Dedication of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Libary. Is was built next to my college and I watched the construction from the science library. I got press credentials for the dedication and took these two photos. I printed both photos in the darkroom (8x10). The first one I also drymounted to a mat board and cut the mat and framed it. The second one is unframed.

Nathaniel Hawthorne - I got the signature and engraving separately. I built the frame and matted it. Mat is actually double mat burgundy over black. Frame is a nice solid wood frame in gold about an inch deep. It hangs on our entryway wall next to my wife's Renoir engraving.

Of all the Einstein pieces in my collection, this is my favorite--a very important letter to James Coleman, author of Relativity for the Layman, in which Einstein presents his thought on how to properly explain Relativity to a lay audience. His conclusion? "Now you may have doubts that this is too much for the possible understanding of the reader... One can indeed have doubts whether a popular exposition of the essentials is possible at all."

This thread has great potential. Love this stuff a LOT more than sports graphs. Great thread. Nice stuff Canfield. Here's my JFK's, a couple of which I got from you:

A paperback Profiles in Courage

A signed cut dressed up into a custom cut trading card

http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/a...psb660fa92.jpg

And one of my favorite modern Presidential pieces. This is an authentically signed extradition warrant, with related papers, to bring a fugitive back to the United States. This one was done in April 1963, as President, in the last 8 months of his life, and contains a tough version of his full signature, John F. Kennedy.

One of my best, and one of my favorites. Got it from the original family that owned the land that the grant is signed for. Sorry this cell phone pic doesn't do it justice, it's the only one I have handy at the moment. Franklin had such a big, intricate signature, even though he was quite aged when he signed this.

David, I love those Wright Brothers autographs.

Thinking about them, and what they went through physically to get those planes built and tested, I think that qualifies much more as 'sport' than billiards, so here's my Hoppe. Inexpensive, but fairly early and high on my list, as I collect Hoppe Pro pool cues as well. Your 1927 Yankees would have just been winding down from their famous World Series when this was signed:

I collect celebrity signed checks, and I've got a few cool ones to show you. On the ones from living individuals, personal information has been digitally removed from the image.

1979 check from Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, dated less than a month after the 10th anniversary of the moon landing:

Ivan Boesky check in the amount of $1.00 to Bergdorf Goodman:

Redd Foxx ("Sanford and Son") check for over $8,800 to the IRS:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3049/...79b0f69a_z.jpg

Moe Howard ("The Three Stooges") check written two months before he died - this check was written March 7, 1975 and he passed away May 4, 1975:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3057/...827b52ce_z.jpg

Jay Leno check written February 24, 1977 - less than a week before his very first-ever appearance on NBC's "The Tonight Show" (Jay Leno’s first appearance as a guest on “The Tonight Show” was March 2, 1977):

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3271/...448457b5_z.jpg

Yeardley Smith ("Lisa Simpson") endorsed check dated almost three months before the first episode of "The Simpsons" (“Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire (The Simpsons Christmas Special)” (#7G08), 12/17/89) - note that the check was not cashed until 2/1/90, after the fourth episode was aired (“There's No Disgrace Like Home” (#7G04), 1/28/90):

https://farm7.staticflickr.com/6029/...26c18e35_z.jpg

Finally, a check from Adam West, TV's Batman, made out to the Santa Monica Municipal Court... for bail:

Greg,

That's a sweet frame job on the Catholics, I just threw you a bid on it over on R&R, I could always use another.

Richard, love the RFK.

RichardSimon 01-17-2015 09:14 PM

Thanks, that is obviously a special picture as most of what you see signed are those head shots, which may or may not be authentic.

thenavarro 01-18-2015 05:16 PM

Don't be shy, let's see more.

Here's another one I like:

1st President, George Washington on a cut from a Mountain Peak Lottery ticket. Pretty nice shape to be almost 250 years old. The Mountain Road Lottery was a fund raising project conceived in 1767 by George Washington and others to finance the building of a road through the Allegheny Mountains in Virginia, and construct a resort in the Hot Springs and Warms Springs of Augusta County, which were reputed to have healing properties. Washington acted as manager of the lottery. 85% of the proceeds would be paid out in prizes; the remaining 15% would be kept for the Mountain Road project. Each lottery ticket cost £1. As there were other lotteries being run at the time, Washington’s lottery was not a success. In 1769, King George III banned all lotteries in the American colonies. The Mountain Road was built in 1772, however, when the Virginia legislature voted a sum of £300 pounds for the purpose of “clearing a safe and good road from the Warm Springs in Augusta County to Jennings Gap.”
