Kirby Puckett's 1984 game used Mud Hens jersey. He only played 21 games with the team before getting called up by the Twins.

Sweet Puckett Mud Hens jersey. Congrats!
I can tell you that HOF Kirby Puckett was one of the two most significant players to ever play for the Mud Hens.
HOF'er and perfect game pitcher Addie Joss also played for the Mud Hens back around the turn of the 20th century.

Johnny Vander Meer circa 1939 D & M glove

Well, I started off May with a bang. :D

I was able to successfully cross one of the few Vandy items that I still am looking for off of my bucket list.

This is a circa 1939 D & M DG20 Johnny Vander Meer model glove.
It's in pretty nice shape, however I will need to have the chris-cross webbing restored since it is missing. No biggie though, because I have a great image from a 1939 sporting goods catalogue that shows how the webbing was strung.

Anyway, I'm glad to finally find this bad boy. ;)

Anyone know who could do a nice job of restringing the webbing and could make it look age appropriate? Please e-mail me if you have any ideas.
Thanks!

Chris,
That’s a sweet jersey.

Amazing jersey!

Scott...

Congrats on finding that Vander Meer Glove. Cool example with a nice strong endorsement.

I'm sending you a PM with contact info for a fellow that is an expert restorer. I think he is a net54 member as well. I believe he can use vintage lacing to get the web to look exactly as it should (with little to no sign of any restoration).

Best of luck!

Great Mud Hens jersey and Vandy glove!

Please share an “after” picture if you get it “re-webbed,” Scott.

1910s Cleveland Naps Scout Tom Daly

5 Attachment(s)
Sometimes its better to be lucky than good! I picked up this photo of a mystery Cleveland Naps player named "Daly." The photo has a Leader Sports Reference Department stamp from June 16, 1913.

Unfortunately no such player was on the roster in 1913. The man in the photo bore a striking resemblance to the 19th century player "Tom Daly," but he wrapped up his baseball playing career in 1903, and never played with the Naps.

Upon receipt I started digging into old articles on Newspapers.com, and also compared Cleveland uniforms to the pic. This particular uniform with the blue collar was worn in 1910 and 1912. When I expanded my search back to 1910, I was able to figure out the mystery player - Tom Daly!

Tom Daly was hired to scout for the Naps in 1910. A few articles and photos from this time period made his connection to the team clear. Happy to know who I've got now!

Haven't posted any pickups in awhile. Here are some of my flea market/garage sale finds from the weekend.
Among the items here: a handmade baseball dart board on a huge thick piece of wood, a ball from the de Beer baseball factory that I believe is signed by the factory workers, a Sporting news pencil, a huge lot of Expos postcards ( a style I've never seen before), a hand turned Kren's Rip Collins bat, a small hockey game with metal balls, and some team pinbacks with original ribbons and metal fobs. Also, one of the best looking pennants I've ever seen in person (couldn't quite get the tip in the photo).

1926 Cardinals scorecard

1 Attachment(s)
Finally obtained a 1926! I only need 1924 to have a 100 years consecutively. 1926 was Cardinals first World Series team. This game was vs NYG & has Mel Ott from his rookie year leading off.

I'll share my latest pick-up... A Willie Gault jersey I was able to photomatch to the 1986 Superbowl XX.

Neither the seller nor I at the time knew what year it's from nor it's significance. This jersey is from the time where the store model jerseys were damn near identical to what the team wore so there are many jerseys that stated out as store bough and were "doctored" up to look game used... This one had a few indicators that pointed it out as a team jersey so I jumped on the opportunity to add it to my collection...

The photomatch shows Richard Dent and Willie Gault congratulating each other at the end of Super Bowl XX against the New England Patriots at the Superdome on January 26, 1986 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The seller listed this as a Chuck Dressen game used bat. It has a 1916-22 centerbrand (I can't read the sidewriting). Lee Dressen was playing high level ball from 1914-21 and Chuck wasn't even out of B ball until late in 1921. Both played for the 1920s St. Paul Saints, so I'm happy with it either way, but was actually hoping that it was Lee's bat. Any opinions?

Thanks.

Chris

Picked this up for a fellow Giants collector..."1953-55 Howard Photo Service" Willie Mays postcard. Not really my thing, but I guess they're hard to come by.

I know not too many people collect (or care about) lineup cards, but for me this is one of the most exciting pickups I've ever had.

I was able to acquire a collection of game-used lineup cards from the 1950's. I've been digging through and figuring out dates (many were not written in and was only able to ID them after I got them in hand)

A few of the highlights include:
  • 1955 Pittsburgh Pirates Lineup card w/Clemente rookie
  • 1954 Milwaukee Braves lineup w/Aaron rookie
  • 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers lineup w/Jackie, Snider, Reese etc. in their only World Series year
  • 1954 New York Giants lineup card w/Mays in his 1st MVP season and the season the Giants won the World Series
  • 1954 Cubs lineup card w/Ernie Banks rookie

These are astounding, especially as a group.

Some new pickups for my low end Giants collection...

First a Mays Hartland. You would have thought I had one of these but I did not. I just recently started looking and found this pristine example at a great price.

Next, a 1958 Hank Sauer Packard Bell card/schedule. They also did a Mays, Antonelli and Rigney. I got the Sauer cheap. The Mays commands big bucks. Thanks for the tips on cracking Hank out of his slab.

Finally, you can never have too much kitsch. The one on the left is new. Looks like they did a fielder's glove, a first baseman's glove and a catcher's mitt.

April 25th, 1954 Braves vs Cardinals. Rookie Hank Aaron hits his 2nd career home run in this game. He goes 5 for 6 which is his first 5 hit game. Teammate Eddie Mathews also goes yard making this the first game (of 75) that the two would do this. Thats the highest in MLB. (He hit his first HR two days earlier here) this is the earliest Aaron HR I have seen.

1949 Sun Picture Camera Photo Set #1

3 Attachment(s)
Happy to add this 1949 Sun Picture Camera Photo set #1 to my Cleveland Baseball Type collection. The set is complete with negatives of Lou Boudreau, Allie Clark, Steve Gromek, and Mickey Vernon. Also has 8 unused photo paper "cards" but I doubt they would still work after all this time.

Very cool!! Was this an "Indians only" thing?

Thanks! I was blown away when I saw the collection and thrilled when I could complete a deal for them. There were a range of others from the Cardinals (Musial etc.), Phillies (Ashburn etc.), and Cincinatti (with Kluszewski). Games pitched by Robin Roberts and Don Newcombe among others.

The 1949 Sun Camera Picture set is just Cleveland Indians. There’s a similar issue from the 1930s that covered all major league teams I believe. I don’t think they’re related but they used a similar technique with negatives and light sensitive photo paper
