Babe Ruth forgeries - a game almost no one feels comfortable playing

OVER/UNDER - 66% of Babe Ruth signatures are forgeries

As Richard would say - let's play

Is 65.7% still under, or are we rounding? :D I would say that 80% + of autographs for sale in the past decade are forgeries. I'm not sure how that stacks up in relationship to the universe of signed items. ;)

What was the quote? Something like " It's harder to find a ball that Babe hasn't signed."?

I agree - I think this is quite a different animal than Mantles.

I always thought that quote was used for Bob Feller.

Runscott 02-14-2015 04:02 PM

With Feller I'm going to say "under", and that's with an over/under of 2

Scott Malack Lee Trythall Babe Ruth Forgeries

The number is way up there for sure.

What is also certain, is Scott Malack and Lee Trythall of Coach's Corner Auctions have sold more Babe Ruth forgeries than anyone else by far.

Runscott 02-14-2015 05:58 PM

Ok, I had not thought of that. Don't count cc in your calculations

This should not be a conditional thread :D.
CC should count just as much as any other criminal.
Just my two cents, your thread Scott.

Ditto.

From what I have seen of ruth autos:

Babe Ruth SS balls I would take over for fakes..

Babe Ruth team balls at least ones with psa or jsa I would take under.

Ruth checks I would go way under as this seems to me to be the best option to buy a real Ruth auto.

As far as the cuts, I would never even think of buying one. From what I have seen. Just my opinion.

RichardSimon 02-14-2015 07:15 PM

Vintage photos I would say under.

Richard I agree with you on this..It seems like to me if someone is wanting to sell as Ruth fake its either a SS ball or a cut. Not seen alot of photos, As with Mantle and Maris photos I see forgeries all day long on Ebay.

Bpm0014 02-14-2015 07:34 PM

Over.

SikSyko 02-14-2015 08:51 PM

Balls and cuts I would say over, vintage photos I would say around 40%. Cards I would say way under.

Klrdds 02-14-2015 09:21 PM

I would say SS balls , cuts, black and white HOF plaque postcards, and the black and white picture postcard of him batting , and Goudey cards well over.
Letters, checks, and vintage photos under.
Team signed balls and team signed photos at the stated percent...66%
Also the 8x10 autographed photo found in a box in my grandma's barn that was used by Ruth to park his car which my grandfather washed during the 1927 season....well over.

Fuddjcal 02-15-2015 12:02 PM

OVER by a long shot.

All that is available are forgeries with a few real ones sprinkled in....UNLESS IT"S A "BARN FIND". Then it must be real.:D

The HOF plaque postcards are interesting because of the authenticated examples:

There is one I am missing, I think Heritage had one as well. I have no opinions on these as I am no expert.

Runscott 02-15-2015 03:41 PM

Count CC - I don't care. The thoughts have all been very interesting. I really enjoy discussing Babe Ruth autographs; moreso, authentic ones.
