Please know I've posted a new story about this box on my site, link above. Thanks Leon for the platform. By the way....if anyone has one of these please drop me a line. -Carlton

Carlton, fantastic story & info on the shipping crate, though it sucks being an underbidder.

Nice article Carlton. I always search for "Antique Football" on eBay, but missed that listing. I'm not sure why. I would have definitely bid on it, but would not have topped the price it went for.

Thanks

Nice writeup Carlton...I know that feeling you had. About 6 or 7 years ago I ran across a letterhead with cover on ebay right when it was first listed for Green's Nebraska Indians and the letter had content about his all Japanese player team he was forming...I agonized over it the whole week..set my snipe and watched what I thought was an impossible to beat snipe get outbid. It sold for $705. Devastating at the time, it was all I could think about, I could not believe that my crazy, insane snipe was topped.

Partial good news is that a few years later I managed to find the cover envelope...listed wrong with no mention of baseball at all and I snagged it for $10. I've not seen another letterhead before or since though.

Great stories Carlton. We've all been there. I can think of three auctions that still haunt me even though I threw out what I thought was stupid money at them and came up empty. I came in 2nd at least on all of them.

I saw that box and thought about bidding on it and would have in my past collecting days. Great item and the type of collectible that you seldom if ever see. I remember that Spalding bat box too.

Great stories, Carlton.

Now that the dust has settled, I'm curious as to which hurts more.... the Crate or the Flask? I know the Crate is far more recent. Sometimes losing out is devastating at the time, but the sting eventually wears off. Other times, the hurt grows deeper as time progresses.

Either way... Don't you just love it when one single being on the Planet comes between you and your treasure? I'd rather lose by a mile than be the high under-bidder. You just can't count on anything until the clock says :00

It's far better to focus on what you've won, and all those times you've been the disappointer (not the disappointee)

Mark, Ah...I reel in a fair amount of stuff so not really bothered by either now...really it's just a matter of understanding you can't get it all...that is after like ya say....the dust settles...I think that box had me because it was just so unique and ancient....but at this point....darn with that $777.00 in my pocket I'm almost glad I didn't get it...God willing I get my share...I did get a football flask later after the boxing flask, link above to that one.

And speaking of getting knocked out of the action...I lost this stein above two days ago on eBay...I wanted it because it has the same basic illustration as the FB flask....and I go into a lot of detail about the origin of the scene in the story...would have been nice to display them together...win some lose some
