Anyone pick anything up at the National in Baltimore this year? Any pictures to share?

Here are my bargains of the week at the national. Goldsmith ball from the okland oaks on back and 1929. 25 dollars. My ruth exacta pocket watch which you never see. Only could find one at auction for 1443.00. Paid 150.00 from an old gentleman walking the floor. It was his fathers in perfect working order which i was surprised. Now my other 2 i paid for was a Wm. Read salesman sample baseball in the box. Really cool, and my tin sign from 1900 which matches my cigar box. What are the odds. Made by the tuscarora Advertising Co. coshocton, Ohio. What colors.

I just got back from the National. I went just for Thursday and Friday.
I thought the memorabilia side of the show was a bit lean. Of course, some of the better items were probably grabbed earlier in the show. My lone memorabilia pickup was a nice children's catcher mitt. Patrick |

We ventured down to the show for the Wednesday evening session and stayed thru Friday afternoon. For the very first time ever I took my 4 year old son to a show and he was a real trooper, keeping up with us as we walked the aisles over and over till we were convinced that we'd had the opportunity to see everything. Attached is a picture of the Dugout Treasures crew along with our newest member...the little guy picked up his first vintage glove on Thursday!
I thought the sampling of vintage equipment being offered was quite good, and seeing it allowed us to visit with some old friends who specialize in that area. We got a nice chance to catch up in person and even meet some guys with whom we'd spoken/emailed with over the years but never formally connected. Kudos to the guys from Play OK Antiques, Huntington Baseball Co., and the Antique Athlete for putting together what was, in our opinion, the best booth in show! Anyway, we had a great time in the Inner Harbor and did pick up a few nice pieces which fill a couple of holes in our collection of vintage gloves, bats, and balls. Starting with the baseballs, here is our National 2012 haul... 1. Well, us...photo taken in the booth shared by a number of our friends. 2. And, last but not least...the leather. Here are the mitts we picked up over the past few days.
1. Circa 1920's Spalding "Double Play" model basemitt...large, soft, supple, buckle back, nice patch, with great markings. 2. 1920's era Winchester Repeating Arms Co. catchers mitt. At long last, we pick up the "right fit" in terms of catchers mitts to round out our Winchester collection. A great week spent with family at a great show in a great town! www.dugouttreasures.com |

Here are mine:
1) Bob Feller different unusual membership cards from his personal estate :cool: Bonus points for the original return envelope with postmark and 1938 stamp. Right up my collecting alley. My personal favorite is the light blue North Carolina Sherrif's Association card (get out of jail free card?) signed on the back by no-hit pitchers Bob Feller and Ernie Shore (threw a combined unofficial perfect game with Babe Ruth in 1917). Sweet! 2) Johnny Vander Meer fan autograph letter request including autographs of the double no-hit battery of Vander Meer and HOF Ernie Lombardi. Interestingly enough, VanderMeer faked the signatures of both Lombardi and Ival Goodman. What a giver! 3) Carl Hubbell vintage signed original snapshot circa 1920's. Thanks to net54 member Hank Thomas for this one. We took home some nice pieces for the collection that I pictured and posted here earlier in the thread. However, I have been told by my son that I was remiss in not posting his acquisitions, and he's just a bit too cute to deny. So, for those interested, here is what a 4 year old boy who absolutely loves baseball picked up at his very first show, the 2012 National.
For those that can do so, I highly encourage you to get your kids involved in collecting as its something that you can do together for, well, pretty much the rest of your lives. Aw shucks, guys. I'd had that Hubbell for several shows and for most of the National. I picked it up cheap and had it priced to sell, an original photo of a young Carl with a gorgeous sig. Figured it would fly off the table, but it waited there long enough for Scott to find it. And it took the dedication to make to our end-of-the-world setup in the room, or I should say "sort of" in the room. There've been several posts about what a wasteland the room with the autograph pavilion was, all supplies and shiny stuff. I'd walk up into the main building to see tremendous crowds (I thought attendance was terrific all week) around the tables, then come back to where Keating and I were set up and it looked like a leper colony. Here he's got the best autograph material at the show and I've got a table full of old interesting stuff, and not a single one of the numerous auction houses and few dealers and collectors ever even made it by to look at what we had. After several frustating days like that, I more or less gave up and loaded up a famous eBay seller with tons of my best stuff--this with half the show left to go. I've never done that before. I ended up having a great show in the end, but only because several of those intrepid collectors who did make it got to discover my "private stock" of smaller Johnson estate photos, some of which Beckett had beautifully slabbed, and made some deals that made it worthwhile being there. Otherwise, it was a frustrating experience being in that part of the universe "where no man has gone before." I've learned the hard way what it means to be in the "smaller room" at a show, but I thought, wrongly as it turned out, that most people taking the trouble to go to a National would at least check out the whole thing while they were there. Having vented about all that, however, it was still wonderful--never been to a National that wasn't. Picked up some fabulous items like this spectacular 1924 World Series ticket strip, had many great encounters with other collectors, put some money in my pocket, and just had a great time all week long.

Didn't go but bought three things
I didn't make it to the National this year but my friend Ryan Sims was kind enough to call me from from the National and told me about four items he thought were up my alley...sure enough I bought three of them by phone and text. My bud John Gennantonio says this type cap was used for various sports including baseball. I'll have to research it further once I get it but I did find a reference of a Blossom who boxed at Harvard. Above is a shot of an 1893 Harvard baseball player wearing the same style cap <a href="http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/?action=view&current=936053b7.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/936053b7.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> Last was this framed c1900, 21" x 11" trolley car sign for Omega Oil that features a track runner in starting position....Never seen it before..Ryan got the trophy....got it from our own Brett Lowman of www.playokantiques.com As I pondered all the pieces trying to decide which ones to pull the trigger on, Ryan advised this sign would probably be around a while....code for get the cap and plaque first before they're gone...But once I got those handled I concluded that if I spotted the Omega sign at an antiques show I'd probably be all over it. A track related advertising sign from the turn of the century is very rare. Ryan said it's killer and I have a feeling I'll really like it once I see it in person.. |
Carlton...we missed you this year. Even though you were not there, you still came away with the goodies. With a "picker" like Ryan you can't miss.

SayHey, It was a large statue of a European football/rugby player that Herbert Thomas the Third had. I saw that statute -- very cool. I don't collect outside of baseball, but as a former rugby player I was seriously considering buying it just to put up in my office. I did, however, buy one of the bats on the rack beyond that photo, as I've been looking for something decorative and it had great, bold stamping and interesting repairs.
Actually, I was meaning to ask on here about one of the repairs to the bat -- it's actually the reason I bought it, because I've never seen one like it (not that I'm an authority on the topic). It is a copper sheath, about 3.5 inches in length, secured by a row of small nails, and is located about 6 inches from the knob. Anyone ever seen such a repair? Was it common? The bat is circa 1920 from what I gather. Had a great time at my first ever trip to Nationals! |

I can't recall precisely, but I'm not a big-budget collector and wasn't shocked enough not to at least run the idea of owning it through my head. Maybe $700? Of course, I have no idea of the market for those kinds of items.

I believe the name written on the label "Blossom" may refer to a E.L. Blossom, who I found reference to as a Harvard class of 1888 member.
