Dazzy Vance
 

I have this Vance in my collection, and I bought it some time ago. Any opinions as to its authenticity? It obviously looks good to me, but I'm curious if others' opinions vary.

It has no certs, if anyone cares.

funny i had the same pic , by the way yours is 100% real . several years ago , i keep images , looks like i have had about 60 vances in the past 10 years and this was one of them just cut differnt

Here is a Vance I sold awhile back 1932 Brooklyn team sheet. Speaking of Vance He's buried in a little cemetery in Homosassa Florida called the stage stop or something like that. I used to visit his grave whenever I passed through the area he was buried very close to where Ted Williams spent his last years.

About 30 years ago I spent an afternoon with his daughter , who I doubt is still alive but she had some great stories to tell , She thought the world of Dizzy Dean who visited her father often as did Babe Ruth to hunt and fish in Crystal River Florida.

I remember reading that article someone posted some time ago about Vance and Zack Wheat being two forgotten Dodger Greats...It was sad to read Dazzys Wife burned almost all his memorabilia after he died. I've always been fascinated with Vance and his line of Baseball Gloves and Fishing Lures among other things. BTW, I think your Vance looks good Wayne.

I never heard that story about what happened to Vance memorabilia , But I do recall when I visited his daughter that she still had some things related to her father, She lived in a very small house , Might have even been a trailer in Crystal River or Homosassa Springs. The items I recall being shown were several items related to his childhood including his original birth certificate , also there was a very large photo of Dazzy Vance that was hanging on the wall that she told me had hung in Ebbets Field and they were given the photo when they demolished the park.
She said he spent most of his time fishing and one day his favorite dog jumped in the water and an alligator killed him, cut him in half right in front of him and it broke his heart to watch it. When he got too old for that he opened a curio shop on the main drag that was in the shape of a large teepee and he sold trinkets to tourists and swapped baseball stories with anyone that had remembered his glory years.
After he died she said her mother used to send out cuts from his signed checks to collectors that would write asking for his autograph.
I always found it fascinating that Vance did not become a regular player in the major leagues until he was 31 years old and still had the best fastball in baseball.

I first read that story in the first book I ever purchased (Strange But
True Baseball Stories?), through one of those Scholastic book clubs
associated with elementary schools in the mid-1960's.

I've never heard the wife/memorabilia story...I purchased a lot of photograph album pages with photos of Dazzy Vance on them from an ebay seller who said the album was Vance's.

I sold this ball to a board member a month or two ago. It was from an Old Timers game and was signed on February 4, 1961. Dazzy passed away 12 days later. This may well have been the last ball that Vance ever signed.

Dazzy Vance 1933 Goudey
 

Here is my Dazzy Vance. It's from the collection of John Laity, meaning it was signed on a New York subway platform between 1933 and 1935. I have ten different signed 1933 Goudeys from Mr. Laity's collection and they are easily identifiable because of the red line he drew as a way of telling the player where to sign. He also trimmed off the "Big League Chewing Gum" banner on the cards that featured those. My Ruth and Gehrig would be worth a lot more had he not trimmed that off. :)
