my top five (i stuck to cards except one):

DS Greenberg (my favorite card, and also the first one i bought back in 1989 when i started collecting)
Copper Plate Wagner (his rookie IMHO) love the Copper Plates!
T227 Cobb (from Halper)
C57 Lester Patrick (early hockey cards are awesome, esp black and white)
and my favorite non-jersey memorabilia piece, iconic Cheevers game worn mask

(sorry if too big, was all i could do to figure out how to past the pictures!)

Tim Kindler 07-08-2017 09:37 AM

Simply beautiful!

Jason and AJ,
I don't care if your Cobb Cracker Jacks are lower grade, they are simply beautiful!!!!

Cheevers was the goalie for the great Orr-Esposito Cup winning teams in the 1970s, his mask was famous for showing where he would have had stitches if he didn't wear a mask (like the goalies did until just a little before his time). One of the early masks that had an image on it rather than just white with cutouts for eyes and mouth.

Awesome "low grade" cards! Their eye appeal is better than most 6s and 7s I've seen for sale lately!

And Paul, awesome Wagner "rookie". It looks like you have the full National Copper Plate bound collection...there are many other "rookies" in there that I would love to have...nice one and oh so rare!

and Kenny, if you ever get tired of looking at your Wheat minor league cabinet, let me know...since it's only #4 on your list, maybe there's hope :D;)

h2oya311 07-08-2017 09:26 PM

Picking a top 5 is a very difficult undertaking, so I cheated and limited my selections to pre-war individual cards/cabinets (e.g., no team photos/postcards, press photos, etc.). And even then, this was a difficult task!

(1) 1873 Warren Studio CDV - Jim O'Rourke
(2) c1943 RPPC - Roy Campanella
(3) 1893-94 Perkins Studio Cabinet - Hughie Jennings
(4) 1898 Polensky Cabinet - Fred Clarke
(5) 1914 University of Michigan Photo Card - George Sisler

No way can I narrow things down to a "top five". It would be more like a top one-hundred. And it wouldn't just be cards and it wouldn't be just baseball. I collect across an eclectic spectrum - hockey, Hawaiiana, 1930s chorus girls, you name it. Anyway, here are six items off the top of my head that put a smile on my face and are part of my top one-hundred.

Jimmy Durante and a bevy of beauties

Hawaiian Decoration by John Kelly (aquatint). Kelly's work evoked the romantic vision of Hawaii better than anyone else and really rocks my soul.

Tough to narrow down to only five but I will try;

1. Barnum and Baily circus elephants playing baseball, this a tougher variation of the similar but smaller version that has both P.T. Barnum and Bailey in the upper left hand corner

2. I have all three Tuxedo's but if I had to pick one, I like the Walter Johnson the best

3. Spalding catchers trophy

4. Peach advertising

5. 1894 Pittsburgh Pirates schedule

Thanks, i do have the bound copper plate set (minus 5, including the Anson, i had to fill in, but accomplished!). i think that is the most amazing set, the pictures are awesome and they have the full description and information on the back. i consider them the first cards and they are perhaps the earliest ones with any player info? so many rookies in there.

i have the M-101 sporting news supplement set too. some different player selection (as an aside, I managed to get a few Delehantys at very reasonable prices while completing, for some reason he is listed in the guide, and was priced at auction, as a common ..but it's Ed Delehanty).

Steve Verkman broke up a Copper Plate set recently and still has a bunch for sale (minus some of the keys but still many HOF's left). was able to finish the set from his sale.

i love that Walter Johnson Tuxedo above! amazing.

Paul

I'm a big fan of Player's League material. Here are five pieces I really like. The Cleveland PL team cabinet with Delahanty and Browning is especially neat.

to me - the uniformed - it's the Giants cabinet that SPECTACULAR!

Baseball Rarities 07-09-2017 03:14 PM

Jay - those PL cabinets are really something else. The New York and Cleveland examples are really special.

I have 2 items to show. Signed 1974 topps set missing about 150 card out of 704 total to being complete. Second it the 40 years of topps card book. Has nearly 700 signatures that I started back in 1990.

Some absolutely beautiful cards/memorabilia in this thread!

Also glad to see some Hockey thrown in as well.

Here's mine, although they pale in comparison.

birdman42 07-09-2017 03:32 PM

Based on today's feelings. It may change tomorrow.

The red felt is of unknown issue (only about 15 players known, fewer than 20 examples total), and the Doyle National Copper Plate is ex- Buck Barker.
