Since I'm always awake when everyone else is sleeping, here we go...

I just won this 1958-61 Mantle PSA 6 just a few hours ago and think it will make a nice companion piece for my 1958 TYPE I Photo taken by the great Don Wingfield.

Here are two photo of 16 year old Edd Roush playing with the Oakland City, Indiana Walk Overs. The first is a real photo PC that is also featured in the book "The Glory of Their Times". In the cabinet photo, Roush is in the center of the top row.

Incredible, sayhey24... where on earth did you find those?

Wow, incredible score Greg!

I went to an auction today and picked up 9 bats of Lincoln Chiefs players that a lady when she was a young gal picked up...she would go down to the dugout whenever a player broke a bat and ask for the bat. Also snagged a nice Goldsmith catcher's mask that I'll probably put up for sale.

sayhey24 08-01-2010 05:21 PM

Mark --

I found the photos on ebay with no reference to them being of Roush.

Dan -- love those bats, that's a very cool instant collection. I saw you made another post about cleaning them. Some people would tell you to leave them as is, but I think they'd look good cleaned up. Murphy's does work well, but I think Matt (mghpro) is more of an expert than I am.

Greg

slidekellyslide 08-01-2010 05:33 PM

Thanks Greg...they definitely need a good cleaning, they are dusty, cobwebby and even had some spider eggsacs on them...I think she probably stored them in a garage.

Dan, appreciate the info....

Toby, what's on the reverse of the Gehrig photo? I've seen that one re-printed many times.

ksfarmboy 08-01-2010 06:04 PM

Wow Dan, jackpot. Simply amazing.

MGHPro 08-01-2010 10:04 PM

Dan
I just posted on the other thread.. Great Find! Oil soaps not going to do much for them. I'd hit them with some lemon oil and they should clean up nice.

c. 1900's Cowan's Base Ball Choc. Box/'50's Football Display/ D&M Major Lg Spec. Bat

Picked up a few items this weekend-

1) a vintage wooden box from my hometown (Toronto), sized like a typical cigar box. It has "Cowan's Base Ball Milk Chocolate One Cent Cakes" and "Made in Canada" on the lid. Has "The Cowan Comany Limited Toronto" on the side (front edge).

2) Large, 1950's? "2 Way" cola counter top display[/B] with a b/w football photo scene. Heard of this cola or its manafacturers before?

3) D&M Sporting Goods, No. 25, 32 inch, "Major League Special", "Made in the USA" bat. Lots of use. Not sure how old this bat may be?

Picked up a sweet lot on EBAY that contained 35 autographs of Negro/Latin ball players from the late 40's-early 50's.
The scans are the highlights of the lot which include the one I really wanted most, the Sammy Bankhead. Throw in 2 Brewer's, 2 Trouppe's and the rest and I was real happy with this purchase.

Picked this up at a local sale yesterday, large signed photo of Charles Comiskey. I found this is the same photo as is used on his 1914-1915 Cracker Jack cards. Do you think there is any chance this is the actual one off photo, or could there be many of them? Anyhow, its signed at the bottom either way. And yes, it is up for grabs if interested.

I'm super excited to add these bad-boys to the never ending list of images that will find their way into paintings at some point (though probably not in the near future). The angle is definitely one of my favorites to work with, and I suppose you can't really beat Hubbell as the subject matter!!!

Carl Hubbell vintage photo sequence

Hi Graig,
That's a great vintage photo sequence of Hubbell! Very cool!
There are three things that I found interesting when I was looking at them:

1) It's very interesting what a compact (short) stride that "King Carl' took when delivering a pitch. Unlike many other elite pitchers that I have examined, it appears that Hubbell was much more of an arm thrower rather than using his legs to provide the power. I know that the screwball was his forte, but I recall another pretty nifty modern screwballer, Fernando Valenzuela, had a much more powerful leg drive towards the plate.

2) Wow, the end position of Hubbell's arm at the finish of the throw is amazing! His arm is twisted almost backwards!! No wonder there haven't been many pitchers to adopt this pitch. How taxing this must have been on the arm!!

3) Hubbell's balance at the finish of his delivery is extrordinary and put him in an excellent position to field the ball. Without examining the records I would suspect that he probably was an excellent defensive pitcher. I will have to check this out when I get a minute....

BTW, here's an interesting factoid: Carl Hubbell once pitched an 18 inning 1-0 shutout vs. St. Louis on July 2, 1933 (a ML record shared with fellow HOF'er Walter Johnson). The tough luck opposing pitcher went 17 innings and was the L.P. Framing this in the context of modern pitching, that's pretty incredible! I actually have a ticket to the Hubbell 18 inning shutout game. It's one of my favorites in my collection.

Thanks for sharing these!

GKreindler 08-23-2010 01:50 PM

Hey Scott,

Thanks so much for those kind words on the piece, as well as your insight into Hubbell.

For whatever reason, I've always been drawn to him. I don't even think it has anything to do with his stats per se, as it might just be what I can see in my mind's eye. Imagining the Giants of the 1930s in the Polo Grounds with my grandfather in attendance is just something that's so vivid in my collective unconscious, even though I never heard any stories.

I was always very interested in hearing what Red Barber had to say about Hubbell, as he always stated that if there was one ball game to be played with his life held on the balance, he would want Carl to pitch that game. There's a whole chapter dedicated to him in his old book, "Walk in the Spirit", which is also really wonderful.

What a pitcher he was.

I concur with Scott on these Graig. Should make a wonderful painting.

GKreindler 08-31-2010 07:54 AM

Thanks, brutha!!

I also just picked this guy up, which will make a stellar painting. I've been after a high-res shot of him in this particular pose from the 2000th game (without the camera flash) for a long while now...

Even though it's not a Type 1 or anything, I'm really glad to finally have one!
