2015 Collecting Goals

Link to 2013
Link to 2014

With 2014 coming to a close, let's revisit our goals that we set for this year, and also establish goals for the upcoming year.

So how did we do?

What are we setting on eyes on in 2015?

Still looking for a D355 and D351. Otherwise will be looking for interesting cards and cards of series I like.....basically type card collecting.

the-illini 12-26-2014 05:41 PM

M101-6's from Jan 1 until December 31 of 2015 - PM me if you have any! :)

x2drich2000 12-26-2014 05:52 PM

These were my goals last year and how I did.

2014 goals
1) finish the e93 set - didnt get any close, still need Cobb and Plank

2) pick up a red backed w554, didn't see a single one for sale in 2013 - nope - at least I saw one in an auction this year, but had to leave it for a board moderator (hi Leon) to focus on goal #3

3) add 12 more e92 Nadja (still need a few St. Louis cards that might make this possible) - off hand, I'm not sure exactly how many I got this year, but am now over 1/2 way done the set

4) possibly start another easier caramel or 30's set such as e96, diamond stars, etc nope - but have been starting to eye the diamond stars set again the last couple weeks

5) pick up an m110 - nope

2015 goals are pretty much the same, with the primary focus being to get to over 40 of the Nadjas, which shouldn't be too difficult as I still need a number of the really easy ones.

Slow going now

Well,

I bought more than I expected this year.

Simply picked up catcher cards that I find visually appealing from a wide variety of sets.

Picked up some T205s, T206s, T207s, and some T210s...a T212-2.

Started a fun subset of colored S74s silks of catchers since I haven't found any Chief Meyers S74s in about a year.

Have a bunch of sets that I'm looking at only one more example to finish my run in the sets.

Hopefully the coming year will provide closure for a few of the following:

1908 Roger Bresnahan E91A
1912 Ivy Wingo T207
1912 Claude Berry Zeenut
1912 Ralph Kreitz Home Run Kisses
1914 B18 O'Neill (Purple/ Yellow) version
1914 Jack Lapp T222 Fatima
1915 Jimmy Archer Cracker Jack
1916 Chief Meyers BF2

Good luck to all in the coming year.

Patrick

Thought i posted in the 2014 thread... Maybe just a similar one.

2014 was good, i think i did well with my goals of adding to my t205 set as well as a bunch of ruth cards.

2015 will be more of the same but, id like to add a drum or hindu back to my t205's and im starting to run out of affordable ruths, so probably not as many but higher end.

Bestdj777 12-26-2014 06:03 PM

Here were my 2014 goals:
1. Mantle Master Set: add one more U.S. issued card (will finish out my set of nationally issued Mantle cards), add the final three postcards I need, and pick up at least one foreign issued card I am still looking for (preferably 1-2 of the Venezuelans that are still on my list.
2. Get married.

I got married to my best friend, and I made good progress with the Mantle collection. I finished up the national issued Mantle cards and picked up a 59 Venezuelan and a handful of regional/food issues. I was less successful with the postcards--I added one to the collection but a handful of others to the want list. All and all it was a great year.

I am still missing 15 regional issue and postcards. For 2015, I'd like to pick up another Venezuelan, a postcard, and a regional. If I can add those, it will be a good year.

conor912 12-26-2014 06:31 PM

Needless to say, I far surpassed my goals for this year. I added many cards and items to my collection that weren't even on my list. Taking the first couple months of 2015 to organize and let the gaping wound in my checking account heal, but I have zero regrets.

Goals for 2014:
1. Pick up 2 more '33 Ruths Picked up the last 3 and the 2nd Gehrig for set completion!
2. Get to 30/100 T3's Got to 41
3. Have the will power to not buy anything for a while and save enough to buy some bigger lots instead of one card at a time Bought 2 nice, medium size prewar collections and met some great guys in the process

Goals for 2015:
1. Finish my T212-2 slogan run
2. Finish my Diamond Star (currently 74/108) and '41 Play Ball (currently 40/72) sets

rats60 12-26-2014 06:48 PM

1. Pick up at least 6 new HOFer autographs.
2. Pick up at least 25 new T205s (currently missing 43).
3. Attend the National.

Shoebox 12-26-2014 07:49 PM

Buy my first T206 card. (Preferably a Sam Crawford)

SikSyko 12-26-2014 08:03 PM

I only collect autographs, here is mine.

Get up to the mid 90's Perez Steele HOF set (at 87 now).
Have over 3000 different hockey players autograph (at 2300 now).
Have over 2000 different baseball players autograph (just over 1200 now).
Have over 1000 different football players autograph (just over 300 now).
Add at least another 100 more Montreal Expos autographs on something where they are pictured in the uniform (have around half of all the players now).
Continue to work on getting all the 80's O-Pee-Chee hockey sets autographed with the goal of having at least 60% of them all done.

Brian Van Horn 12-26-2014 08:12 PM

No focus. No goals. Very relaxing.

jason.1969 12-26-2014 08:14 PM

My main 2014 card goals were to finish my Hank Aaron collection and my 1957 Topps Brooklyn Dodgers team set. I am checking off both even though there are still some Aarons out there that remain interesting to me.

For 2015, I am tempted to shoot for the 1956 Topps Dodgers even though I currently have zero! But the big goal is a Babe Ruth...just need some legal matters to crawl to completion first.

bravesfan22 12-26-2014 08:37 PM

trying to save up enough collecting cash to purchase a t206 ty cobb bat off psa 1.5 or 2. hoping to reach this goal by the national because i want to make the purchase in person just to make sure i really love the card.

the only issue reaching this goal is not buying too many other cards while in the process of this goal :o

CharleyBrown 12-26-2014 09:00 PM

My primary goal for 2014 was to finish (or at least make further progress on) my 1947 Jackie Robinson Bond Bread set.

Other goals included picking up a Jackie Robinson auto, and to finally dive into the Pre-War arena.

Mission (almost) accomplished.

I picked up the last super tough Jackie Robinson Bond Bread thanks to the help of Greg S. and Jason E., and I now only need the more readily available Portrait - Facsimile Signature.

I also picked up a t206 Mathewson dark cap to finally start my Pre-War collection.

I didn't get a Robinson auto, so that will have to wait.

2015 Goals
1) Finish the 1947 Jackie Robinson Bond Bread set (There's a Portrait Facsimile Sig. on eBay right now, but I will wait for a nicer example)
2) Add 1-2 of the following key cards to my collection
a) 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig
b) 1954 Topps Hank Aaron
c) 1921 e121 Babe Ruth (Follow Through / Throwing)
d) t206 Ty Cobb Bat Off
e) 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle
3) Continue to build my Pre-War collection

And no fun? :)

BTW Brian, if not a focus, what do you call your penchant for accumulating W504 cards? :D

Wishing you the best for 2015,
Val

ValKehl 12-26-2014 09:26 PM

My collecting goal for 2015 is the same as it has been for the past few years - i.e., to add to my collections of type cards, Walter Johnson cards, Sam Rice cards, and cards of all the other players on the 1924 Washington Senators Championship team.

Not being a traditional set collector, the only realistic chance I have of experiencing the euphoria of completing or nearly completing a "set" is with the Sam Rice cards (because too many type cards and WaJo cards are beyond my collecting budget). Although my OCD collecting disease requires that I strive for an example of every variation of every Sam Rice card (a "master" set), if I exclude the variations, to the best of my knowledge, I need only the following Sam Rice cards which are known to exist (either they are in the PSA/SGC pop reports or I know someone who has one) to achieve a "basic" set:

1917 Standard Biscuit (D350-2)
1925 Universal Toy & Novelty (W504) (hello Brian!)
1928 Harrington's Ice Cream (F50)
1931 Strip card (W502)

In addition, there may be Sam Rice examples in existence from the following card sets, however there are none listed in the PSA/SGC pop reports, nor have I ever seen any of these:

1917 Merchants Bakery
1921 Standard Biscuit (D350-3)
1921 Clark's Bread
1921 Queen City Cigar Store
1922 Strip card (W573)
1922 Haffner's Bread
1922 Lou Gertenrich

I'll be grateful for any help with any of these Sam Rice cards. Also, I'm looking to upgrade my poor example of Rice's 1917 Boston Store (H801-8) card.

Good luck to everyone with their collecting goals for 2015!
Val

2015 Collecting Goals

Speaking of mental illness, I hope to add a few more of those arduous and tenuous E105s to my hoard set. 21 down, 29 to go.

John V 12-27-2014 04:58 AM

Champ

I'll be on the lookout for a T210 Series 8 - Osteen.

frohme 12-27-2014 07:21 AM

Same as it ever was

Hopefully, I'll be able to mostly sit 2015 out, like I was intending to in 2014 (and 2013)...

If reality has its way, and the urge kicks in, at least the focus remains very narrow, still just T207 subsets ... a few very specific upgrades to SGC 40+ and a few front/back combos for the year would be great.

So many of you helped make 2014 a success, I am truly grateful. The sense of community and (generally) camaraderie makes Net54 a good place to visit ... often ...

Hope you all have a great 2015

Hey Brian,
That really is a gorgeous example of Sam Rice's W504 card!

If you ever get the urge to do one act of kindness for me, just amend your will to bequeath this card to me in the unlikely event (because I am age 71) that your demise precedes mine (not that I would be rooting for this, of course)! :D
Best,

EGreenwood 12-27-2014 09:48 AM

2014 has been a mixed bag. I hit most of my goals. Picked up two T200's (both Chicagos) and got my first, and only, Mayo.

On the downside, I still can't find the last Greenwood (87 Pocatello Mike Greenwood) for my Greenwood player collection. I have been able to pick up two N172 Greenwoods over the years, but can't locate this one.

2014
  1. Let's try this one again - period Cy Young < $200 Check - Domino Disc
  2. 10 hits to my type collection Check
  3. 10 hits to my player collections Check
  4. Add 15 34-36 Diamond Stars Struck out here
  5. Take more trips to my existing binders and enjoy what I have. Check

Now on to 2015:
  1. Close out my contemporaneous card HOF (1901-2001) list by getting a Dizzy Dean and Jack Chesbro
  2. Add 2 T200 to get to 10
  3. Add 5 35 Goudey 4 in 1
  4. Add 5 34-36 Diamond Stars
  5. Add 5 T206

tonyo 12-27-2014 10:08 AM

My goals from the 2014 thread:
1. Continue to develop and maintain a relaxed pace on all my collecting projects. I was ok the first half of the year, but became a bit too obsessed in the second half of the year.
2. 50's, 60's, 70's topps/bowman hofer run - acquire all the "easy" ones. down to 3 easy ones needed http://net54baseball.com/showthread....72#post1359272
3. Dabble with my t206 set - less than 10 left on my list to upgrade, pick up a few more less common backs to sprinkle into the mix. Check. down to 3 on my condition upgrade list, also picked up maybe a couple dozen less common backs and cards with backstamps or other interesting marks
4. Reach 100 different pre-war types. Check. Should receive a W502 Combs today to make it 100 different pre-war types
5. add to my e-card, t210, and t212 subsets. Picked up 8 e-cards from my want list. I'm down to 5 needed for my target subset now. I've pretty much decided to abandon my t210 and t212 subsets for now. I don't believe I added any from either this year.

My 2015 goals:
1. Develop and maintain a relaxed pace on all my collecting projects.
2. Continue to upgrade my t206 set by adding less common backs and cards with backstamps or other interesting period writing or marks.
3. Add a few cards from some of my favorite 30's sets to my pre-war type collection.
4. pick up two or three of the tougher cards from my post war topps/bowman regular issue hof run 48 thru 79. Still need five 52's, six 51topps, and these: http://net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=198147

Happy Holidays Everyone!

GoudeyGum 12-27-2014 11:50 AM

In 2015 I will continue working on the tough cards from the '41 Goudey set (I have only found 1 so far), and continue working on my T201 set. I also plan to add a few older graded world series tickets/stubs. I may also do a bit of type collecting to keep things interesting.

Good luck in 2015 everyone!

Danny Smith 12-27-2014 03:10 PM

5. Enjoy all that life has given me

kamikidEFFL 12-27-2014 06:28 PM

In 2014 I set two goals for myself. I completed just one of the two. First goal was to complete half of my 1934 Goudey set. As you all know it's my main focus in my collection. I have hit the half way point only by a few but I'm on the down slope of the set now. I really should say the more expensive side of the set.

The second goal I had set was to pick up the #37 Lou Gehrig. I came close a few times but never pulled the trigger. It's the one of the priciest cards in the set and a very sought after card in the hobby. The "white whale" will have to be caught another time.

Goals I have set for myself next year are the following.

1. Get to the 75 card mark in my 1934 Goudey Set
2. Grow my T202 set to 15 cards (At 2 currently) above the grade of 3
3. Start the T201 set
4. Complete 12 transactions on Net54

I have set 4 goals I feel are obtainable but still long year ahead. I hope to complete them all but will have to wait and see. The one I hope to break more than anything is #4. Really like to get more involved with people on this site. Those are mine guys, now lets here some more from you guys.

nebboy 12-27-2014 06:56 PM

I had a great 2014, got more and better cards than I could have ever hoped.

2015 I'm going to try to take a year off as much as I can. 3 or 4 mid range cards at most.

1-T205 Hof
1-N172 (Omaha team set)
1- CUBS Hof
1- what ever happens or catches my eye

Bigb13 12-27-2014 07:06 PM

I am going to try and finish my 1914 Cracker Jack set 46 cards to go.

not an old card, but....OMG....if you could help me with this I would be eternally grateful. It's a 3.5" pinback....so rare, even the picture is fuzzy. :p

kkkkandp 12-27-2014 07:51 PM

I have been ridiculously fortunate the past couple of years and I cannot possibly hope to replicate that success yet again, but the goal is the same as always - cross off at least one card from my 11-player Old Judge "A" want list and at least one card from my 8-player Old Judge "B" want list.

jburl 12-27-2014 09:15 PM

My goals for 2015:
1. Nashville T206 players (Piedmont and Old Mill backs of each)
2. Continue to continue progress on my 34 Goudey set. (I am trying to build a set entirely of cards that have non-obstructive writing and/or pinholes, but still present clean with solid corners. About 35% of the way there.
3. Add one ticket stub from Auburn's '57 undefeated season.
4. Continue to add to my Auburn player collection (football/baseball /basketball; primarily in Auburn jerseys)

Joe_G. 12-27-2014 10:37 PM

Same/Same - 19th Century Detroit

I had a successful 2014 but only met 1 of 4 goals as the other items simply didn't surface. My goals this year are very similar, albeit condensed.

1) Locate and acquire one 1888 Detroit N172 that I still need (16 poses remain), bonus points if it happens to be Gilligan.
2) Locate and acquire one 1889 Detroit N172 that I still need (3 poses remain)
3) Locate and acquire one N173 Detroit, one N333 Detroit Journal NewsBoy, or Detroit Wolverine scorecard from a year I still need (1885 or 1888).

All three are about equally likely/unlikely. I would claim complete success with as little as two OJs and a scorecard.

HRBAKER 12-28-2014 12:03 AM

Off the Top of My Head

1. Eddie Plank T5
2. Jack Coombs Blue & Green Bkgrnd E98s
3. D381 HOFer or two
4. 1959 Bazooka Ernie Banks
5. 1959 Bazooka Don Drysdale
6. the M101-6s Brian doesn't get
7. Philly A Rose PC I don't have
8. Connie Mack Old Judge
9. Philly A T5 I don't have
10. Cardinal photos

That should be a good starting point.

2015 Collecting Goals

2014 was a very fun collecting year for me: In addition to becoming active on this forum, I managed to complete my t206 SLer and Horizontal subsets, and also aquired my first Cobb last month (still glowing).

My goals for 2015 are to aquire:

1. a Babe Ruth card
2. 1950 Bowman Jackie Robinson
3. 1951 Bowman Mays
4. a N172 Old Judge example
5. Add some big name HOFers (Matty, WaJo, Lajoie, etc. ) to my t206 set

Lets see how it goes...

Wishing you all a great 2015!

David

2015 goals

Here are last year's goals and how I did...

1. Finish my T201 set...only need 8 (got down to needing 2, so a close completion, but not quite...a little bummed I didn't concentrate on completing this set more as I only needed two)

2. No definitive number on the amount of T206's I want to accumulate for the year, but I'd say on average, close to one per week...so we'll say 40...that will get me over the 200 mark (got to 197, so I'm happy with the progress and will call this goal a success)

So in 2014 I went 1 for 2, batting .500...I'm a hofer...not too shabby ;)

I'm pretty loose on goals and I'm not tough on myself either way. Here are my goals for 2015:

1) Reach 240 T206's...currently at 197, which would mean accumulating 43 this coming year.
2) Complete my T201 set...currently at 48/50...need Cobb and Lajoie.
3) Add at least five '38 Goudey's...currently at 30/48
4) Possibly start a new set when I finish the T201's

Good luck everyone on their goals for 2015...should be a great year and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's pickups along the way!

wolf441 01-02-2015 07:10 AM

After a strong 2014 where I pulled my T206 "Monster Number" up to 518, my goals for 2015 are to become more focused, to buy less, but more important pre-war cards.

My goals for 2015:
1. T206 Demmitt St Louis, O'Hara St Louis, and a Black Lenox Back (all SGC)
2. Continue to try and pick up interesting t206 Dode Paskerts (mis-cuts, color shifts, WSTs, stamps on back, etc). I haven't had much success thus far as I haven't seen many (or actually any) Dode T206's with these types of flaws. He must have been in a good spot on the sheet layout!

Also looking for a T213-1, a T213-2 Phila version and an upgrade on my T213-3 Dode. And if I happened to luck across a T214 Victory, a T215-1 Red Cross or a T206 Blank Back Dode, well let's just say I would make the funds available!! :D

3. Get to 100/144 on my 1950 Bowman Football set. Currently at 31/144 (all graded 5 or higher).

Those are the main focus, but I'm sure as usual, gears will shift throughout the year.

Happy collecting to all in 2015!! :D

VoodooChild 01-02-2015 07:42 AM

Here were my goals from last year:

1. Continue to sell off my modern collection and try real hard to stop buying that stuff - except for an occasional Pirate. Update: Kind of passed. Didn't sell too much, but more importantly, didn't buy too much either.

2. Double my T206 set to 150. Including getting an AB back and either a Wojo Hands at Chest or Matty White Cap. Update: Failed. Got to 125. I did get a few AB backs and a Matty Dark Cap instead.

3. Triple my E121 set to 30 including getting at least 5 HOFers. Update: Passed!

4. Add at least 10 new/different Pirate Pre-War Types. Update: Passed!

5. Spend just the right amount of money on cards so that my wife does not file for divorce. Update: Kind of passed. I spent way too much but I am still married.

6. Attend the National in Cleveland and meet some of you guys. Update: Failed. Maybe I'll make it to Chicago.

For 2015, I've already decided this will be the year of quality over quantity. I'm going to concentrate on acquiring a few "biggies" like T206 Wajo or Cobb, '33 Goudey Ruth or Gehrig, and any of the E121-80 toughies that rarely surface. I'm also going to attempt to talk my wife into allowing me to buy a Wagner (maybe an E90-2, M116, or Tip Top Bread), but that's a long shot!

In 2015

Goals (I hope to stay in this order)

1) Finish the process of organizing and scanning what I have

2) Finally sell/trade all the stuff in the sale box- this will make my wife happy as she is sick of me having it out in the open as a reminder that I need to sell/trade what's in it.

3) Reach the following milestones for my HOF collections: 85% Baseball (+20 cards), 70% Hockey (+65 cards), 90% Football (+62 cards) & finally organize my golf HOF collection so I even know what I have % wise

4) Slow down the Monster pursuit but get to 50% (+27 cards)

5) Pick away at my Cope's Golfers set

6) Pick up another 15 PSA 10 Martin Brodeur Cards

7) Stay focused on the list above

Hopefully 2015 will bring a close to a couple T210 subsets I'm very close on. Other than those two, steady progress on the rest of my collection would be nice as well. Good luck to everyone in the new year!

2015 Goals

My goal for 2014 was to sell a bunch of misc stuff to fund pursuit of The Monster - I did pretty well - thanks to all the members that bought from me on BST last year, my MN is at 509.
2015 goals:
1. Continue to downsize collection - especially books, publications and newspapers. I might set up at The National and try to unload a couple hundred pieces.
2. Peck away at The Monster - adding 4 or 5 in 2015 would be good.
3. Continue pursuit of a Magie - gotta get those 80 points.
4. Continue opportunistic buying of Cobb, Banks, Shoeless, Jackie, Satchel when the price is right.
5. Win Cave's fantasy baseball league again - highly unlikely given tough competition.

I'd like to get over 100 pre-war postcards in my collection. After that, I'll start on the next 100!

My Goals:

A) 5 mid-grade T206's - Green Cobb a must!
B) N508 Sub-Rosa - Grab 'em when I find 'em
C) Welcome a happy and healthy addition to my family this July (most important)

Good luck to all
