April pickups

Just picked this up today at a local flea market...

docpatlv 04-01-2011 06:31 PM

Congrats John!!! Now that is an incredible pick-up. Why can't I ever find items like that at the flea market? I didn't even know that the Post cards were issued in singles, I always thought they were issued like this (or in perforated sheet form)...

Great pick-up!

Mike

The Post cards came in sheets or on boxes, which are a thicker stock. They generally came in 5 or 7 card panels on the back of boxes (like yours). The closely related Jello cards came individually on the smaller Jello boxes, but I have never seen a small snack-size Post box before. A great pick-up!

Very, very nice Aaron box.

Congrats.

ThoseBackPages 04-02-2011 06:38 PM

wow Sweet Aaron!

sayhey24 04-04-2011 08:45 AM

What a great Aaron box!
I've seen two or three others, all of them Alpha Bits. There was a Koufax that sold in the Legendary Bill Mastro collection auction in December.

Thanks. But it wasn't cheap and I originally decided to pass on it. In fact I was already out the door and half way to my car when I had a change of heart. I collect Milwaukee Braves cards and I knew I'd never seen another one, and probably wouldn't ever see one again, so I decided to go for it. Even though my box is empty, I'm glad my wife decided to give me the go-ahead especially after seeing how much the Koufax went for.

Finally decided to go after the '52 set. Here's my 1st pickup for the set (and a possible resubmit for a bump?). Three guesses where I bought it!

Nice pick up Brandon!

I picked up this '52 Jackie this week to complete my '52-56 Jackie run. The creases are not as bad in person as the scans suggest, but it's still no where near the condition of your Mays. I can certainly understand why you'd want to pursue this set. Good luck!

The '52 Mays looks really nice for a 4.

Great pickup Rob. I almost pulled the trigger on that one. It looks like a real nice card for the grade, and you really couldn't beat the price. Congrats.

Not trying to "outshine" you Rob, but my latest "cornerstone" card came in:

Items like that are so rare that if you can afford it you should never sweat it; there is no such thing as 'overpaying' on an item that is going to be a cornerstone of your collection.

Rob, like David, I was thinking of pulling the trigger on that one. Pat, that's an incredible Robby!

Anyways, I just got this in today.

Don't laugh now, but I'm gonna undershine all the other Robby's here. This one's definitely destined for an upgrade, but it'll be well loved amongst my other beaters for now. It honestly makes me wish I would've pulled the trigger on the other one even more. But I can't complain about the price either. Pat nice pickup BTW, that is one beautiful Robby.

That my friend is one beautiful Aaron! Its got to be way undergraded! Is there back damage because it should at least be an PSA 8.5 or higher!:eek::eek::eek::eek:

VinTX 04-18-2011 08:47 PM

I agree, that's a beautiful card. Nearly perfect centering. Can't figure out what gave it such a low grade except it kinda looks like maybe there's some minor surface scuffing? but then that could just be the scanner too ;)

cwazzy 04-18-2011 09:00 PM

Stunning cards, guys!

I've started to put together Cardinal team sets from 1960 and back. I know it's a common but I got this one in today and I can't stop staring at it. The card has a flawless picture and great centering. The lint spots you see are from my scanner. I tried to clean it but apparently I suck. LOL It was PSA graded but I cracked it out. Any guesses on the grade? :)

scmavl 04-19-2011 02:58 PM

PSA 8? Maybe because of the one fuzzy corner. Great colors and image on that card, love it!

Big Six 04-20-2011 12:01 PM

Bucket List Card...

Thanks to SCMAVL (Jarrod) on the board for cutting me a nice deal on a card I've long wanted to add to my collection...we'll see how the "gods" at SGC treat me with this one...fingers crossed! Despite a light crease in the upper corner, I was blown away by the centering which has become my primary concern when buying cards. Thanks again, Jarrod!

Thanks guys! The corners do hold it back. They are still nice for the grade but not quite good enough. No surface scratches just slight corner wear. I might try and see if I can at least get a 6.5 out of it.

After focusing on pre-war for the past 8+ years I'm really enjoying these mid-grade 50's with great eye appeal again. Cards like this just blow me away and they are so much easier on the budget too. :D

Here is the back

That's an interesting panel. Two first rate broadcasters, and Lou Brock! The Cub fan in me often wonders what would have happened if we had kept that speed demon around.

I've got a couple square cornered supers, I wonder if they are hand cut.

And...... think how good the Cubs could have been with Lou and Billy Williams in the outfield together for 10 years.

mintacular 04-22-2011 08:16 PM

Sweet

Sweet Aaron, awesome centering. You should get a YL one too to boot. Looks like the light wear on the corners keep it out of a "7" holder...Here is a recent upgrade for me, decided to add a few more nicer Clemente's to my collection, I am a Pittsburgh kid after all so it's a must:

VinTX 04-22-2011 11:06 PM

man that's an awesome '56 Jackie...great centering on that! seems a shame it only got a 6.5. Nice pickup!

Now if only I could find a '47 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson with the rounded corners, and a '51 Whitey Ford Bowman 5 or better at a nice price.

One of the worst trades

Yeah, 1969 NL pennant for sure, maybe a couple more that the Cards would not have won. But, at least they got a lot of use out of Ernie Broglio...man!

Welcome back. Nice pick-ups!!! BTW, I was away from the hobby for 15 years and in 2006 I made my first new purchase, a Koufax RC PSA 4. Looks like you're looking for HOF RC's??

Thanks! Ironically, the Koufax was first of the three that I purchased.

I'm focusing on both Jackie Robinson, and also on HOF RC's.
