What set are you OBSESSED with?

This topic has probably been broached a few times in one way or another....But quite simply what 1 and only 1 set are you certifiably addicted to? And perhaps why? Mine is '57 Topps Baseball, and you?

1959 Bazooka Baseball

Although I must admit my passion for anything postwar as compared
to prewar would not qualify as an obsession.

Like Drew, i was compulsively obsessed with the '52 Bowmans, but it was back in the '80's, after feeling the first pangs of mortality,
which got me reflecting on childhood for some reason. I was flipping through a Street & Smiths annual and saw an ad in the back for 10 mint condition Bowman cards for five bucks. Couldn't even recall which year I had collected as a kid, so sent Larry Marchant 25 smackers and when I saw the '52's i knew they were the ones i had to have. Took me about ten years to complete the set because i obsessed over registration of the images and went through several of each card looking for the best examples. These days, my hobby
lunacy seems to be focused on the '51 Topps issues.

My absolute favorite has been (and always will be) 1971 Topps. I started collecting baseball cards in 1984, and it wasn't long before I checked out what earlier cards looked like. That's when I "found" the '71s. I started building my set card-by-card that year, back when NM commons could be had for an incredible 15 cents each (with high numbers costing a whole $1.00!). I was always very fussy about the cards I picked for my set, and I also took some time off now and then, so, yes, it took me quite a while to complete it -- 28 YEARS, in fact! I just celebrated the completion of my NM 1971 Topps set in January!! I know some folks prefer to build a set using whatever cards they can find, but I can't see the point of buying a card that you're only going to upgrade later. That's one of the chief reasons it took me so long to finish my '71 set. Now that it's done, I've started to focus on finishing some of my other sets, namely my '59 Topps and '68 Topps, both of which are at about 90% complete.

The All-Star subset from this year is still my all time favorite set of cards.

ALR-bishop 03-16-2012 09:20 AM

1958

I am from St Louis originally and was 8 in 1958. The all star subset was a favorite of a lot of kids there because it was the first Topps Musial...until a better one came out in 59 :)

The Yellow varations are pretty attractive as well. I love the way the Yellow Letter Hank Aarron stands against the green background. Just don't like the prices you have to pay to get one........LOL:D

Al, I told this in another thread that the reason I first started collecting the 58 All Stars was because the Musial A.S. card was featured on an episode of Hart to Hart back in the early 80's.

I saw the card on the show and was hooked on it and collecting all the '58 All Stars.

The Musial is still my favorite of the lot but I sure do like the Mays and Mantle cards too.

I am very fond of the horizonal issues from Topps.

In particular the 1955 Topps set. With the 56 and 60 sets coming in at a close second.
