Who WON'T you collect?

Here's another strange question: Is there certain players or teams you won't collect and for what reason? Personally, as a T206 collector and die-hard White Sox fan, I won't have any Cubs in my collection. I also don't want any of the "convicted" gamblers (Cicotte, Gandil, Chase etc.) in my collection. My 10 year old son who collects modern day stuff doesn't want any of the known roiders in with his cards. What are your feelings on this subject?

JasonL 03-17-2010 10:06 AM

good question...

Well, I am your polar opposite, as I collect T-cards of my favorite team, ...The Cubs! and I will not tolerate any White Sox in the collection. at least not on purpose. :D

Other than the Southsiders, I don't find anyone really offensive enough to leave out deliberately...except for Robbie Alomar. Such disrespectful acts as the umpire spitting incident may be forgivable in my personal life, but not in a public persona where I try to uphold the fantasy that these athletes are to be admired for superior skills while on the field...

Jacklitsch 03-17-2010 10:14 AM

I am just the opposite. I will collect Cubs but hate the White Sox.

I am particularly fond of bad boys and collect a Hall of Shame with cards of Weaver and all of the Black Sox Eight.

The badder the better...Chase, Gedeon, Borton, Smith, Maggert, Zimmerman, Burns, Attell, etc etc

Bill Stone 03-17-2010 10:23 AM

Steve Bilko --he wrecked havoc on my Hollywood Stars and I will never forgive him and I will never have his card near my collection.

uffda51 03-17-2010 10:32 AM

I collect both the famous and the infamous - but nothing after 1960.

BTW, I love Steve Bilko!

Beatles Guy 03-17-2010 11:05 AM

Though I dislike the Cubs very much, I'm an equal opportunity collector. I won't reject a card based on personal feelings.

FUBAR 03-17-2010 11:08 AM

I refuse to collect the biggest prima donna to ever walk "Brett "look at me" Favre".

please please just retire and go away already!!!

As for vintage, i dont collect commons after 1952.. just star cards, no room to collect commons.

onlychild 03-17-2010 11:16 AM

I won't collect B&W cards...think they are ugly.

Try very hard to stay away from SGC graded cards. Most of the time I will crack them out (using only my fingertips)..although I still have a few.

Just curious as to why you stay away from SGC cards. Is it because they are so easy to crack out?

Sorry if this was previously discussed in an old thread.

I won't collect O.J. Simpson cards. He used to be one of my favorites. But now, he just doesn't cut it.

dstudeba 03-17-2010 02:12 PM

Pre- War cards with pictures of American League or National League players on them.

barry

Irwin Fletcher 03-17-2010 02:45 PM

I'd prefer to not collect the truly despicable people in baseball history, such as Ben Chapman, but it's hard to stick with that when you're collecting a set and he's in it ('33 Goudey, for example).

deadballera 03-17-2010 02:53 PM

I won't collect

Honus Wagner
Joe Jackson
Babe Ruth
Lou Gehrig
Walter Johnson
Cy Young
Buck Weaver

etc

simply can't afford them )-=

Bicem 03-17-2010 03:55 PM

I refuse to collect Rob DeWolf cards.

Best post of the month award goes to the kid.

I will cross the street to avoid walking past a Dodger card. The problem is I seldom check for traffic before doing so.

drc 03-17-2010 04:48 PM

From Cheers, concerning a classy lady Sam Malone hoped to win over:

Diane: "She wouldn't cross the street to spit in your hair."
Sam: "Give her time. She will."

Timely post, Jason. As a life-long Jays fan, it absolutely *kills* me that Alomar was involved in this incident. Just thinking about it puts a pit in my stomach. That being said, I just finished reading 'Three Finger: The Mordecai Brown Story' a couple days ago and was shocked to read that Joe Tinker, while managing the Columbus Senators, was fined $100 for the exact same action.

David W 03-17-2010 06:38 PM

As a Cardinal fan, I don't collect Cub cards....

although I do have a soft spot in my heart for 2 ex Cubs...

Brock and Sutter - Thanks for the World Series titles....

and will gladly collect them in a Cubby uniform.

We got Brock and Sutter, you got Leon (wickets) Durham.

Sorry.

Now we've even sent you our beer. That's got to hurt.

E93 03-17-2010 06:52 PM

For a long time I would not collect Anson cards because he was such a racist. When I began collecting N28s, I gave in....
JimB

FUBAR 03-17-2010 07:48 PM

rumour has it Ty Cobb was a bad racist and an arrogant, ignorant ass....

I too, as a Jays fan, was so disappointed in Robbie Alomar, he used to be my fav Jay at the time.

Kawika 03-17-2010 09:23 PM

The way Ben Chapman treated Jackie Robinson was the embodiment of thoughtless racism as it prevailed in the U.S. in those days. Pinky Higgins was no screaming hell as a human being either. Steve Carlton broke his silence with the press after he retired to share his opinions about Jews vis a vis The Elders of Zion. A regular Hall of Fame Asshole. There have probably been many others whose attitudes were contemptible and unforgivable, even in the context of their times. Would I collect their cards? I have an A&G Anson and some Cobbs and I still sleep OK. Why not a Goudey Chapman or a Play Ball Higgins? They're all part of the story of America and of baseball.

- That kind of sarcasm will run people off this board! ;)

Robbie - O.J. & "cut it".....I got it

Deion Sanders - Years ago, if I was at a show and pulled one of his cards from a pack, I would give it to the first kid that came by or throw it away. Then he almost got his own bass fishing show (my other passion). My co-workers used to tease me about it. Of course, it flopped. I wonder what those producers were thinking in the first place.

For their current prices, all the Black Sox Players!

Overratted IMO especially the J. Jackson game cards & W514, and the Weaver cards, especially the common Obak.

Another example would be the extremely overrated Ten Thousand Obak card, its just as common as the others and he sucked.

But if I got a good deal on these ..... I would buy to flip :)

no better time then now, the prices of his cards have been slashed!

You can now get "two for the price of one!"

drc 03-18-2010 01:23 AM

For antiques, I consider them to be historical figures-- which will be good, bad and complex--, so will collect the perceived good and bad. Besides, the bad are often interesting.

It's different for modern players. For example, I won't collect ARod, Mark McGwire or Barry Bonds. Maybe in 100 years.

It may be telling that my favorite old player is Ty Cobb (bad boy) and my favorite modern is Robin Yount (good boy).

So overrated that you down-graded him to Ten Thousand? :p

Well said David. See you at the Baltimore National !!!

I have all sorts of lowlifes represented in my collection. I have a Ben Chapman card in particular that I like. But for some reason, the story of Jeff Heath smashing the bat Home Run Brown used to hit the first homer run by an African-American in the A.L. in 1947 really offends me. In response, I have resisted picking up a card of Heath. Strangely enough, I have an old baseball signed by both Heath and Chapman ...

Later in life, Ty Cobb also set up an educational foundation that mostly gave college scholarships to poor African Americans in Georgia. I think he really transformed over the years. I believe that foundation still exists today. Most of the money came from his investments in Coca Cola that made him a very wealthy man.

Jim, there is also a hospital in Cobb's hometown of Royston GA that treats anyone in need.
Its named after him and by the lobby is a Ty Cobb museum

drc 03-18-2010 04:18 PM

I see nothing wrong with collecting items of bad or ambiguous people-- Benedict Arnold, William Sherman, Jesse James, Al Capone--, though I would draw the line at serial killers.

If you read their bios, a number of the iconic Old West outlaws were borderline serial killers. Same could be said for many of the celebrated Depression Era gangsters.

kmac32 03-18-2010 04:34 PM

I agree with Jason on the Cubs. White sucks are not high on my list of needs. However, the team I despise the most would be the St. Louis Cardinals. Their fans are obnoxious and the players are cocky. Not a good combo platter in my book.

Steroids and Judge Landis... and maybe Selig

I try to avoid adding serious cheaters (steroids users) and Judge Landis items to my collection. When they are part of a set I want, I simply turn their card over when mounting them in collector's sheets.

Landis, incidentally, is singled out for his attitude toward integration of baseball. The steroids users (esp. longtime abusers) obviously steal from the game, their competitors, the fans and, ultimately, themselves.

That Baseball seemed to care little for the game's integrity for too many years reminds me that I should add Bud Selig to the list also. (Except I can't think of any set he has been included in that I collect.) I do, however, give Selig credit for naming the DH award for Edgar Martinez but that call may fall under the category of a Stopped Clock Being Right Twice a Day. (What would be his other good call?)
