1932 Bulgaria Sport Photos Album

The 1932 Bulgaria Sport-Photos set consists 272 cards from a variety of international sports including boxing, golf, field hockey, and ice hockey. Produced by the Dresden, Germany tobacco company, Bulgaria Zigaretten, these unique tobacco cards feature black-and-white photos of its subject with a neat, white frame. Card backs feature a block of test in German. The set is anchored by Max Schmeling/Babe Ruth (#256), which captures a suit-clad Schmeling beside Babe Ruth in the gray flannels of his away uniform. (This is the only depiction of Ruth … or any American ballplayer … in the entire set). The set is also anchored by Walter Hagen (#219).

The album also contains a picture of a demonstration of American football at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The football game at the 1932 Summer Olympics, combined with a similar demonstration game at 1933 World's Fair, led to the College All-Star Game which was an important factor in the growth of professional football in the United States.

Other keys are Sonja Henie, Johnny Weismuller and Charles Lindbergh, I actually supplied PSA with the composite for their set registry :)

I have at least one complete set and it's in high grade so I wanted gradually grade it and register it. They wouldn't add it to the registry until I could provide more information so I actually tracked down a German dealer and the rest is history. I never have gotten around to submitting very many, but I do have a few really nice cards on the registry.

I tried dealing with PSA when it came to Olympic stuff. I set up a set for Olympic autographs, then PSA decided they would set up their own set of "American Olympic Greats". This included members of the gymnastics team that won only the team medal, yet neglected some of the greatest Olympians of all time. The funniest one is Steven Redgrave being a part of the set. While he is a five time Olympic medalist, he did so while representing his home country, Great Britain. I've twice pointed this out to PSA. I finally gave up. Here it is, seven years later, and Redgrave still represents the red, white, and blue...

Yeah, in a way I was lucky, trying to get PSA to change anything is tough, but I was providing information they didn't have, and that they requested.
