Question about T213-2 backs

4 Attachment(s)
Hi folks,
I did a search but I couldn't find anything that pertained to this. I purchased a few T213-2's over the weekend. Several of them have some sort of print lines on the back. There were others that sold that also had them, but I only bought the 6 that are pictured. I looked through the T213's that I already had and I found 3 more that are similar.

Some of these cards appear to have glue stains and they feel as if they may have been soaked. I don't think the lines can be from the item that the cards are glued to because they are to straight and perfect. Some of the cards have horizontal blue lines, some with vertical blue lines, some with horizontal red and blue lines and some with a combination of both.

Did this occur during the original printing process? Any thoughts?

Thanks, Rick

Hey Rick,

Those have some interesting patterns. I've always assumed that these were glued to some kind of lined paper, perhaps an earlier version of college or wide ruled white paper.

Note that on both types the vertical line is red... Sometimes single, sometimes double, etc

Some of these cards might have been glued once, fallen off, and then reglued. I would imagine that the glue causes the cheap ink on the ruled paper to bleed through into the card and glue.

Rick, they look like they were affixed to notebook paper. Probably from the same collection.

By the way there has been a flurry of T213-2's offered lately. Hopefully you and others on here have been able ti fill some gaps. Here's a recent one...

Steve or Rick, did y'all see the hammer on the T213-2 Konetchy Boston Nat. ? It sold for more than the WaJo. The T213 rarities are not well known, but those of us that follow the set know that there are some cards with really low pops.

Yep, notebook or Ledger book bleedthrough from years of being glued to low-rent scrapbooks or composition books.

That was my first thought, but the lines seem too perfect for bleed through from a notebook. But, it is the most logical conclusion.

Also, I did notice the Coupons that were sold last week. PWCC listed 113 graded Type 2's, and I was hoping that the large amount of cards that were being sold at one time would keep the prices down, but it turned out that most of them sold for ridiculously high prices. I placed bids on 24 cards, but I didn't come close to winning any of them. Cards that I thought would sell for $100 sold for $200, $250, and one of them sold for over $500.

The night after PWCC ended, another seller had 50 of the Type 2 auctions ending. These auctions were the complete opposite of the PWCC auctions, in that they sold for ridiculously low prices. I ended up winning 7 of them, and I actually felt a little guilty that I won these cards at such low prices. (Not guilty enough to offer more). These cards were low grade, with glue damage and paper loss, but still, most of them sold for half of what I expected.

There were many rare cards, mostly team designation variations, including some that I have never seen come up for sale before. I was lucky enough to win some of them in the raw card auctions.

Rick, here are 3 I got from PWCC today... The Konetchy Boston is only from 1916 and is a short print. The Donovan is from 1915 and 1916 and is almost as scarce. Donovan was a player-manager for the Yankees from 1915-1917.

I picked up a Collins from the ungraded offerings. Glad you got some of those.

I'm at 159/185 now. I may consider my set full at 184/185 as I don't expect to be able to find and buy a Demmit NY on Shirt.

Hey guys,

Yes, I was able to pick up a number of the graded ones, and I picked up three of the raw ones the next evening.

Rob, I did see what the Konetchy sold for...I was the surprised underbidder left wondering how much it would have taken to win. Sorry to see I cost you a few bucks on that and the Donovan as well. I imagine that we'll see another Demmitt NY at some point...I recall you made a very strong effort on the one nearly three years ago...I often wonder who picked it up.

The graded ones sold for a lot the other night because in order to win them, one had to outbid two other ebay buyers who tend to relist purchased cards on eBay shortly after buying them. Those two buyers were not bidding on the raw ones.

I appreciated the quality of the graded ones... They were all super nice. I needed several for my set, but I couldn't help but upgrade on a few more, even though I'm just working to complete the set in any condition. I'm glad to note that the only two I actually needed that I didn't win went to you, Rob.

PS, Congrats to you both on some good pickups!

RCMcKenzie 05-13-2019 06:28 PM

Thanks, Steve. The only 2 cards I really needed from the sale were the Donovan and Konetchy Boston, so I bid strong on those. I knew you guys are working on the set and would probably need those as well. I was glad to get them.

Did anyone see the ending price of the 2 extremely low grade T213-2's last night?

Quinn - Vernon and Krause Omaha. Because of they were so beat up, I thought I might be able to pick them up for $100 each.

I don't remember seeing either of the variations come up for auction in the 8 years that I have been collecting this set.

Wish I had held on to my Coupons...had that Quinn in better condition...never had that Krause...oh well....Jerry
